    Total newbie here.

Moved into college accommodation with a george foreman grill, a mini table-top oven and two hobs.

Any decent cooking books for a total beginner?

This MABs cookbook gets good feedback among beginner cooks I know. My little sister & her boyfriend got some cookbooks written for students when they moved in together and highly recommend that approach, that type of cookbook normally assumes you don't have a lot of equipment knocking about

Toscana in Dame Street, if you fancy Italian http://www.toscanarestaurant.ie/menu_earlybird.php?menuid=4

Thanks Dizzy. I haven't been to Toscana since 2004!

It's my colleagues birthday tomorrow so I'm making her a "zebra cake". It's a striped cake with alternate layers of vanilla and coffee/ chocolate batter. It's been a fun evening of making a mess and getting goo everywhere.

I made two batters and then spooned them bit by bit on top of each other into a cheesecake tin, like this:

Then just kept adding and adding...

Until finally I had the whole lot in the tin...

Now it's in the oven and I'm very excited to see how it turns out!

    Finished tomorrows dinner :D
Four big lamb shanks browned off, on top of onions, carrots, peppers and chunks of sweet potato in the slow cooker for oooooh, 14/15 hours. Bit of stock with added tomato puree, garlic, mint and rosemary splooshed on top and Bob's me uncle!

Where's the pic of the zebra cake?! :D

I've gone a bit mad with the Groupon deals recently and booked myself in for two cookery classes- one is preserving/canning, the other is macaron making. Really looking forward to them! Also considering a poultry butchery class. Meat is so expensive here I could do with a lesson on making the most of it!

I really want to try Gentlemen's Relish, does anyone know if anywhere in Ireland sells it?

LOL. I just read that out loud, and my dad nearly crashed the van.

I got a tub in Fallon & Byrne a few months ago. Not only is it delicious but you'll snot yourself laughing everytime you open the fridge and see it.

I'm delighted with how the cake turned out... I cut into it late last night to make sure it wasn't a hideous mess.

This morning I lashed on some chocolate buttercream to hide the spirals - twill be a nice surprise when she cuts into it!

I've never done any baking, don't have much of a sweet tooth myself so never got into it but producing something like that zebra cake would be extremely satisfying I suspect!

Baking doesn't have to be just sweet things. Baking bread is great! :)

I had to say it out loud, as I thought it was something else. Turned down the radio and all to hear it. Yeah I know, weird.

I've always made butternut squash soup and I love it. Am I dreaming do I remember reading once that the soup is better if the butternut squash is roasted first and that some people don't peel it?

Also bought a celeriac today? Any suggestions for cooking it please?

Yeah I always roast my squash (or pumpkin), skin on, before making soup... it sweetens the flesh beautifully :)
No idea re celeriac though, in fact I've never even tasted it! I've an idea that celeriac and apple puree is a thing with roast pork though?!

Celeriac is lovely mashed with an equal amount of potato and a little butter and milk.

I'm pretty sure someone posted a recipe for apple & celeriac slaw, a search might find it for you.

I'm looking for a good quality accurate fridge thermometer if anyone can recommend one. Preferably online.

    Cheers J.

    *slinks in shamefacedly*

Finally updated the Cooking Club recipes list to bring it up to date for 2015, sorry it took so long.

I did get a reminder of a rake of stuff I want to make though! Tarragon & white wine chicken, summer rolls & kebabs are top of list.

Any culinary courses out there for total newbies with no confidence in the kitchen?

Also, I have limited space in my studio/flat. I have a hob, George Foreman grill, microwave, toaster and a few utensils. Anything else that would help my situation?
