Yeah was planning on doing that if the other sites failed, already used my Prime membership on my own email adress, but could easily sign up on my student email and get another trial for one day delivery, send to parcel motel and hopefull have by thursday, only bad thing is that im ordering a case aswell, but luckily the depot is across the road from me so not too bad to collect it.

That should work, but keep in mind that Parcel Motel will charge extra for oversized objects.

I totally get where you are coming from. But at the same time, we can't exactly expect anything better.

When you look at the landscape here in Ireland for Pc enthusiasts, it's a niche market and a niche community. There is more knowledge in the spectrum about mobile phones and performance then there is about desktop PC's.

My girlfriend uses Harvey Norman alot to print photographs, and I'm always in earshot of their staff. I nearly feel the need to get involved everytime I see someone being advised to buy stuff, but then I figure that its your own fualt if your not well informed about any purchase you are making.

It's not just Harvey Norman, I've heard the same nonsense in Currys, Pc World and other stores. There is a push to laptops, netbooks and tablets. The PC's that are available are terrible spec and relatively high cost. For why they cost so much, I've no idea.

But with the perpetual cycle of poor information, poor education on customers parts, and retail stores that push low spec machines at high margin, with staff incentivised to push them for commision it's not going to get much better.

Sure its being going on for decades in the car sector. And that is people spending upward of €20,000. Being poorly informed, poorly researched, and being suckers for sales pitch.

A real Irish thing is focusing and tunnel visioning on the price, ignoring the quality and benefits, and considering it a good deal if you haggle the price or get something else.

So I'm not in the one bit surprised that this spreads into the second hand market, where bad information and expectations are the norm.

At the same time, people are never opening and welcome to feedback that an item they paid a lot of money for, is worth jack **** a few years later. So I find you never get far trying to correct someone on a poor price, instead I just move on after making an offer. You rarely convince someone they are wrong selling their goods.

And if we are being honest, I've seen a few posters names I recognize from here, operating under the same name on adverts, fetching higher then value on some items. So it works in favour in certain aspects too. A lot of guff and overload on technical talk, to convince people they are buying something better then it actually is.

The thing is, if it's someone buying say, a GTX970 2nd hand for virtually the same price as new (which happens a lot, incredibly), then I couldn't care less - they are paying over the odds, sure, but at the end of the day nobodies getting hurt, the seller gets money, the buyer gets a lovely graphics card. Same for Gaming PC's that are spec-wise powerful but overpriced - don't care about those either, no harm in that either. Also, there are quite a few people - myself included - who sell things to specifically make money too, so you have to factor that in as well, the asking price isn't final and even a lower offer takes profit into account.

It's more people selling stuff like Gaming PCs and Gaming laptops that haven't a hope of running any new games, and you have potential scenarios like parents buying for their sons or daughters, they get home several hundred quid lighter and find that they can't play any games. That makes me really angry. I sell older computers sometimes, with Q6600/Q8200 type processors and GT640 type graphics card for €180ish - and I go to pains to point out 'This will play Farming Simulator/Black Ops 2/Sims 3/etc. This will NOT play GTA V/ Battlefield 4/etc. Then you come along and find someone selling the same system for €600 as a 'Gaming PC' that can play all the latest games.

I know it's buyer beware but there are so many families and individuals out there who don't have a lot of money but want to make someones birthday/Christmas/whatever special, and they buy 2nd hand because new is financially out of reach (poor value aside). Imagine the disappointment on one of those mornings when everyone realizes you've bought a heap of junk and none of the games work....that's why I get so angry.

Someone paying over the odds for a processor, or a graphics card, a game, a stick of ram, an overpriced but still decent machine, or whatever, that's all stuff I don't even think about.

Where would you get a 280 for 100 euro? Genuinely asking, the going rate is about 140 for one. Crossfire 280 is decent, especially when it has 3GB of vram as well.

GTX 960, the MSI 2gb (Im a student, dont judge...) 222 on computer universe and 226 on komplett!

CEX have a 960 in stock at Westmoreland for €200, obviously it's preowned but given it comes with a full 12 month warranty that's pretty good considering you could walk in there tomorrow and pick it up. Only problem is that you have no way of knowing what model it is until you actually walk in. I've bought a few cards from CEX through ordering into my local branch, it's kinda half the fun wondering what it'll be! I bought a 280X before for 180, and when it arrived it was the Sapphire Vapor X model and it still had some of the 'please remove before use' stickers on the shroud. :)

@TerrorFirmer Yeah I had seen that, I always like buying new things so took the plunge and went and ordered a new MSI 960 today, should be here by wednesday or thursday at latest! Thanks a lot for the advice, I lurked this forum for about 6 months before posting up about building my own computer in 2013, I built it, and then went back to lurking haha!! The help is brilliant, most forums youd get slaughtered for asking stupid questions.

Also ordered a ThermalTake Versa H15 case, not the best of cases by any means but I like the way it looks and a nice windowed side panel, should also be here thursday!

Ah B**s, was looking to have my new GPU before the weekend. Funnily enough, theres no real price difference between there and Komplett, so may just go with them.

How's overclockers compare on price? They had my 750 to me within 2 days, and the packaging was fantastic. Was wrapped with so much padding it was nearly the size of my case

Colour me curious TerrorFirmer, what would you reckon a fair price is for a second hand GTX970?

As a buyer, for any components, I would be looking for 20-25% off the cheapest new price for the same manufacturer/model or equivalent performing part, if I was buying second hand. If it comes with a receipt and warranty can be claimed by somebody other than the original buyer then a bit more.

I know you asked Terror, but I personally would not pay more then 260eu for Second hand one as they can be bought brand new for 340eu. For me personally that amount of saving would be worth the risk of taking GPU second. Specially when GPU is a very high risk item to buy second hand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 712 ✭✭✭deejer

My current pc is almost entirely build from parts bought on adverts. Think the ram I may have bought new. I have never really had much of an issue dealing with people. At this stage there are a few sellers I keep an eye for when they are selling stuff as I know the quality I can expect.

Selling on adverts for me is a different story. Although I know the items at the stage I am selling them are well down the generations and probably third hand at that stage. I don't think there is much value for me trying to sell them so I just keep them. I have a few cards and other items that I have build up over the last few years that I think I will just hold onto instead of sticking them up on adverts.

Saw one go for 80 on Adverts yesterday

That's how I feel. I wouldn't pay more than that either. But I see people paying 320-340 for second hand ones, sometimes without receipts - and that's their business entirely - but I don't understand it. Brand new one with 100% secure retail warranty for a few euro more. I also see people paying 250-270 for reference cooled, out of warranty R9 290's when brand new, excellent cooled 3rd party models with full warranty are selling for 300.

Actually I did see that as well, deal of the century - but sadly not the norm! :P

Thanks lads. I probably overpaid a little for my MSI one in that case (about €300) but not enough to be kicking myself.

There is a seller on there that i'm sure you have seen selling "new but tested" gpus and other bits at nearly full retail and has sold lots of items.I really dont understand why so many buy at so high prices either. It really makes me wonder do so many people just buy without researching the retail prices.

Yep, some guy was selling a card for 340 that was available at 330 or 320 retail, and his justification was that it was tested and I had my question removed.

He is almost certainly using a VAT number and selling them for retail prices making a nice few quid on the side.

Yeah same guy so.He runs his ads like a business yet he is a private seller.Always wondered why he has not been made to register as a shop.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Adverts doesn't care, registering as a shop is entirely up the seller. I'm not registered as a shop either and don't intend to, being a shop would imply that you're willing to offer warranty and support. Which is grand if that's your business model but I don't have time for that. I don't understand either why people pay full retail for a 2nd hand item from a non-retailer but that's their business I suppose!

I was thinking about selling my 390X, I was going to ask €380 for it initially to start, but maybe I'll take a leaf out of his book and start the bidding at....€480 (had to check Amazon's new price!)

In fact though, when you think about it, what he has done is quite clever - he's built himself up as a 'shop' even though he's not a shop in the adverts sense, or legal sense either, but he makes himself out to be a supplier and gives people this sense like they are, in fact, buying a new item from a retail outlet.

There was a 390x put up by some guy last week for €440 and later he dropped it to €400. He said he bought it for €500 but it took three clicks to find out he bought it on Adverts for €340 two weeks beforehand.
Third-hand for €440 when you can get the exact same model new for €432. What a chancer.

Nah, he withdrew when nobody offered over €310.
To be fair to him he also had it in an i5 3570k build w/all peripherals & 27" monitor for €1300 which is a grand price (although that's been withdrawn too, everybody on Adverts wants to split machines to bits), but selling it on it's own he seemed to have a lapse in judgement & got greedy.

If they're near a Micro Center give them a couple of product names you might like to have, they have daily or weekend in-store deals and bundles that're crazy good value.
Keep seeing that stuff pop up on Reddit, makes me extremely jealous.
