I also emailed Jeff Bezos about this issue. I sent the email on 7th October and got the following reply on 11th October.
My name is xxxx and I work within Amazon Executive Customer Relations.

Jeff Bezos received your e-mail and asked that I respond on his behalf, taking any action necessary to assist you.

I've reported this problem to the appropriate team.

We apologise for this inconvenience. Thank you for taking to the time to highlight this experience.

    Regards,
    xxxx
    Executive Customer Relations
    Amazon.co.uk

I'll wait two weeks before sending Bezos another email, for all the good it may do.

PS - yeah. ASA - Advertising Standards Authority in the UK.

I had to contact Customer Service by email to get my delivery charges refunded. In fairness to them, they were fairly quick to respond. I explained to them exactly what the problem was and how I shouldn't have to this hassle to claim my money back. I linked to this thread! I got the following response:

First of all I apologise for this situation happened to a valuable customer lie you.
I've reviewed our previous correspondence with you and would like to apologise for the incorrect information provided by my colleague.
From your email I understand that the when you try to place order, your purchase was split in to two and Free delivery option was given for only one item.
This situation was the result of a technical error, and I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused. We didn't intend for this to happen and I hope you'll give us another opportunity to prove the quality of our service to you.
I've reported this problem to the technical team and they'll resolve it as soon as possible to make sure that this will not happen in future. These errors are normally fixed within a short period of time.
Again, we apologise for this inconvenience.
I hope this helps. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

I emailed amazon about an hour ago complaining about this again and 20 minutes later someone from cs phoned me to talk about it. To be fair to him, he was very nice but he had no clue about the issue. He went and asked a manager and came back to tell me that the issue has been resolved today and he then emailed me his direct phone line number so that if it happened again I could ring him straight away  Must try and place an order again now and see.

Added a few test items to the cart and the problem is still exists :( All items in the test order were fulfilled by Amazon and well over the super saver shipping limit.

Interesting seeing this, I haven't ordered from Amazon for some time mainly due to exchange rate. I use Parcel Motel quite a bit, rather than waiting for couriers so free delivery wasn't an issue, but I found that they irrationally split deliveries costing me extra with parcel Motel.

Unfortunately but not surprisingly the ASA complaint has been closed. They claim that Amazon are aware of the technical issue and are working on a fix.

I did the same - ordered the goods from Amazon and then just got them to call me back and they refunded me the postage that should not have been charged in the first place. I just feel sorry for people who would not have the cop on to call or have the time to follow up - they are getting ripped off... This could come back and bite Amazon on the bottom. Imagine how much extra revenue they are actually receiving due to this internal error... I was charged £6.66 extra for one item and this realistically works out at almost €10 extra on my card.

A bit off topic, but this is precisely why I also haven't used Amazon in a good while. Is there any competitive alternative to Amazon.co.uk for Irish residents? (I buy mostly books)

For books I use http://www.bookdepository.com/ a fair bit, sometimes their pricing can be a bit off but their prices are in euro and free shipping on every order.

You know bookdepository are owned by Amazon right? I've switched to using Kennys.ie instead, they've been cheapest for the last few books I was buying, they have free delivery, and best of all they are an Irish retailer

Looks like this issue's been sorted. I only had this issue once and never reported it to Amazon (was only a few €s). Got this email earlier today:

"We’re writing to let you know that due to a technical error you were unable to select FREE Delivery for part of an order that qualified for FREE Delivery, and were therefore incorrectly charged for the cost of delivery. We will be refunding the delivery costs for the orders where you were incorrectly charged for delivery within the next few days. When we’ve completed the refund....."

They also have me a £10 coupon :-)

Trading standards will have chewed their bits off over something like that! They actually have proper powers and really sharp teeth in the UK unlike the auld Quangos we have here!

almost as if....they'd been working on it the entire time :P

Almost like they changed a line of code and fixed it overnight :D

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 7,464 Mod ✭✭✭✭pleasant Co.

But after they added the "make it work sometimes" line of code, and then the "make it work better but not totally" line of code. All to get the smallest amount of money from paddy? Which they then refunded....yup, holds about as much water as a sieve
