No it's not they are bypassing the normal planning function and denying the residents a say in what happens in their community.

yes it is, the council are doing no such thing. the system to object is open, the residents blocking are the ones choosing not to use it.
    gandalf wrote: »
You talk about using normal channels to protest this. They can't those channels have been removed. You do understand this don't you?

the channels haven't been removed, the residents are refusing to use them
    gandalf wrote: »
No they are people quite commendably trying to preserve their local community. They are trying to preserve their culture

    no they are nimbys
    gandalf wrote: »
They are entitled to protect their community. And as for the tosh about blocking the emergancy services. You are aware that the location they are blocking is at the end of a cul-de-sac. There is no one there to be rescued

they are not entitled to block the council from using its site. the council using its site is above board and legal, these nimbys blocking access well, aren't legal i should bet.

So it is outside the norm, which is special treatment.

    its not special treatment.

No at this stage the Travelling community have to concede that the world has moved on and they need to join the 21st century and if they can't do it themselves then general society need to direct them in this direction.

no the traveling community can continue their nomadic traditions and society will not interfere in this hystoric rich tradition

What alternative planet are you on. Did you not see the cutbacks over the last 10 years. The monies wasted on this shame of traveller organisations and traveller accommodation can be used far more productively in a myriad of other more worthy areas.

any money can be better spent depending on who you are, but it is being spent on the traveling community for good reason.
    gandalf wrote: »
You know you are right but again as has been stated by many the traveller community seem to unwilling to work with the authorities to weed out the bad eggs. Until they do their reputation is going to be marred by the criminal elements.

do the settled community work with the authorities to weed out the bad eggs? am, not really TBH. no the criminal elements will be used to bash all in the community because its exceptable to do so where as not with other groups. thats why this continues.
    gandalf wrote: »
It is a waste of money. It is obvious to me that the nomadic lifestyle is one that equals less education, less employment opportunities, higher possibility of criminal activity and lower lifespans. There is absolutely no way that society should be financing and encouraging this.

its not a waste of money to provide basic facilities for those taking part in nomadic traditions. its societies duty to provide those facilities. we are not encouraging anything by funding those facilities..

I'm not sure how to quote someone on the new boards setup but Endoftheroad, you're either 'at it' or very naive, in my opinion.

naive isn't something that even registers with me. i know what i'm talking about. you can be sure of that.
Yes it is. They consider themselves a minority and every one of them is looking for a handout.

no it isn't. some are looking for hand outs yes, not all. looking for hand outs isn't something unique to the traveling community

End Of the road, you have made a statement that you know there is no anti social behaviour at that site.

That statement is key to the whole thread.

So again, please stand over your statement and clarify how you know the allegations are false.

You make these statements and allege the residents are nimbys but when asked to clarify your position you can't.

That is very one Sided and does your argument n favours whatsoever.

They're not using those channels because they don't trust them. They're taking the law into their own hands because the law is unable to protect them.

They haven't continued with their nomadic tradition much in the last 9 years though, have they.

That's not the same thing. I have no issue with "this group has a bad track record so I wouldn't want to live near them", I have an issue with "travellers in general have a bad track record so I wouldn't want travellers living next to me just in case they turn out to be bad ones".

That's an ideology many in this thread are justifying in an extremely thinly veiled manner. It's called profiling.

There's nothing inherently wrong with profiling, unless you mean by race or religion, which wouldn't apply to travellers as they are obviously neither. Sort of like how some landlords wouldn't rent out property to students due to their propensity for late night drinking and partying.

I think most honest, unbiased people, would agree that travellers have a far higher statistical probability to be involved in criminality and anti-social behaviour than other demographics on this island.

At what cost & for what good reason?

I can't see any benefit form them, yet some of my tax dollar is funding their 'culture'.

G'wan. Tell us the advantages of having this community in our midst. List out the the good points.

Why am I as a taxpayer shelling out for this crowd when all they do is take take take?

If you look at the site on google maps you can clearly see an oval track cut out of the adjoining piece of land. This is due to cars being raced around. This is one of the anti-social issues.

The council own plenty of other suitable sites in the immediate area and have used the residents as a distraction from their own culpability for the fires causing such horrible consequences.

There were far to many caravans and prefabs in close proximity on that site with no space for fire breaks. Dun Laoghaire has plenty of halting sites that are well equipped. Had a similar fire taken place in one of those the loss of life would have been considerably less.

Just so everyone an idea of the figures involved in housing travellers.

State pays €370m over 10 years for Traveller housing

    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/state-pays-370m-over-10-years-for-traveller-housing-29194716.html

That's just for housing. Now factor in education, funding to numerous traveller quangos and not even mentioning SW and you are probably talking about a figure well in excess of 1 billion in ten years.

the law is able to protect them. the reason they are taking the law into their own hands is the same reasons as why anyone does. media attention. however this time the media isn't biting.

end of the road has declined to give an answer on this, so I'll give a shot at answering.

    1. Historic; It's been going on a long time. Far too long for most people's liking really.

    2. Rich; Well, If I was drawing the dole & all my 'enitlements', paying no mortgage, no tax on any work I've done, sure I'd be rich too.

Some say that some of them rob stuff. Sure that would make then even more wealthy.

Oh, they're a great bunch of lads really. I'm so glad that my taxes contribute to this bunch of scamps.

    Bless 'em.

    Quelle 'kin surprise.
i know what i'm talking about. you can be sure of that.
Actually we can't. You just repeat the same platitudes with near zero factual evidence to back up what passes for you position. Do you work for Pavee Point by any chance? If not, I would respectfully suggest it might be an employment avenue worth exploring at your next social welfare meeting.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

God I do hope you're a troll, if you are, my hat's off to you. If not? I'm sure there is some madcap bunch of delusional political independents that would welcome you with open arms.

i'm employed all ready so there will be no social welfare meeting. i don't work for pavee point, i just continuously educate myself and build up my skills

By 'employed' does that mean you have a job?

Do work to pay a mortgage?

What 'skills' are you building up?

Are you one of the 'eternal students' of life'?

You have zero concept of proportion.

I can tell you're a traveller based on how you respond to criticism.

When I see posts like this, I wish there were a 'No Thanks' button I could press.

At least end of the road got 'stuck in' & put up a fight for his/her position.

You just jumped in to insult a poster for no obvious reason.

Well Filmer Paradise; I'll accept your press of an imaginary "No Thanks button" for my comments, and I'll sure take it into account the next time I post on these here messanging boards. Reckon I'll change my ways.
    Thanks for the feedback.
You have a good night now.

They posted about it in the thread, one saying he'd lived in fear of them.

Who knows what is true and what isn't.

But sorry, to get links I'd need to scroll back through the pages of the thread, but if you want a look, it's there. (some of it shouldn't be too far back)

Yep, like another poster said, it's here in the thread if you're able and willing to go back for it. Maybe four pages back, maybe five. My advice is to head off early and wear warm clothes. Bring a packed lunch. Watch out for Indians. Good luck.

I'm glad that you've taken in my thoughts, absorbed them & woken up to yourself.

I'll have a good night & I hope the new & improved you will have a good one too.

    Glad to be of help.:)
