This guy should have been given a medal not a fine.

Father-of-four Jason Fitzpatrick (20) failed to get the clamp off his wheel, but was spotted by a garda and arrested.Judge Ann Ryan told him she would leave him without a criminal conviction if he made a €100 donation to charity.

Fitzpatrick, of Rathvale Park, Ayrfield, pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage to a clamp belonging to Dublin Street Parking Services on May 6.

Dublin District Court heard the incident happened at Bedford Row in Temple Bar at 3.40pm.

Gardai on beat duty saw Fitzpatrick trying to remove a clamp from his vehicle using an iron bar and industrial hammer.

He had four prior convictions for minor motoring offences.

The prosecuting garda agreed with defence solicitor Tony Collier that Fitzpatrick had failed to get the clamp off.

"He became annoyed and frustrated the car was clamped," Mr Collier said. "He appreciates he shouldn't have behaved in the way he did."

The accused was on disability allowance and had attended a number of special schools while growing up.

    Hurt

All his children were under five and included seven-month-old twins. He was putting "all his efforts into the family home", said Mr Collier.

Judge Ryan adjourned the case for payment of €100 to Crumlin Children's Hospital and said she would strike the charge out if this was done.

"I think it won't hurt as much as paying it to the clampers," she said.

I'm figuratively speechless. There is so much wrong with that article!

Can't see why he should be allowed park where he likes just because he's accumulated 4 kids by the time he's 20.
It's not like he was clamped by some cowboy outfit. If it was Dublin City champers that got him, you can be sure there was a reason.

Mustn't be that disabled if he's fathered four kids by the time he's 20.

The only place you could park on Bedford row is in the loading bay on the quays end.

People need to fight back against the clampers.

I don't agree with all clamping but im sure he wasnt clamped without reason.
If it was a loading bay as someone suggested, he deserved it.

They could just park legally and put them out of business?

Animals, especially dogs which are a mixture of multiple breeds, can be referred to as "Heinz 57".[9]

I absolutely do not condone the actions of this rather foolhardy man.
    However
The only people I've come across who offer support for clamping in our capital are rarely those who have to deal with their on occasion over zealous and somewhat under fair and often discriminate approach to parking.
In cordial conversation with clampers they admit it is a tax.
In discussion with shop owners - many are in constant battle with council because clamping is affecting their business, not just customers, but even delivery vans.
In discussion with on duty ags "We hate the €&@?&@s as much as you"

I can point you to daily illegal and dangerous parking - across pedestrian crossings, at lights and in yellow box, being completely ignored by clampers, yet almost empty residential side streets are actively targeted for tickets run out by minutes. If you want genuine details just pm me.

When they deal with genuine traffic improvement, dangerous, illegal and nuisance parking, parking in disabled bays etc and stop targeting soft inconsequential targets for the easy buck then I will offer the same support some so frivolously show them.

So much wrong with the judge's decision it's hard to know where to start. Honestly is it any wonder there are so many (more) serious crimes committed each and every day when everyone knows they'll get away with it? Much easier to go for the soft targets like speeding of course.

Is it reasonably common to carry an "iron bar and industrial hammer" in your car?

I have a hatchet in my boot at the moment, but there's a good reason it's there.

Stupid ass. More in his line if he went out and got an education for himself. That would not only provide him with an income/money to pay the fine, but maybe a few brain cells to know where not to park! 4 kids by 20, sure he's only a kid himself. What a mess.

If he had any sense he'd have gone to a hire shop and hired a cordless grinder or bought a bolt cutters. Both options are cheaper than the fine.
