That thread has popped up in one form or another pretty much every single month for feckin' years now.
Renua say they will add 3 cents a liter. Yeah, I think they're being (deliberately?) optimistic here. This is just vote bait. The technical term would be "a steaming pile of horsesh*te". Noonan once mentioned it would add 20 cent to the liter. The truth may be inbetween.
One of the arguments for doing that is that 40% of motor tax is being used to simply pay for the admin. Online taxation hasn't helped. Can you guess why? Because they will have to pay the same people the same (plus annual increments) money to do less work. If we add tax to fuel, we will still have to pay the same people to do, well, fcuk all really. So the problem is the drones in admin that will cost the same regardless of what system we have.

Work with guys from Spain and Italy, where aircon is not a luxury, but an absolute necessity, you don't want to be stuck in a traffic jam at 40 degrees plus without it. Ireland you turn it on, yep, still works, turn it off again. :pac:
