Again they're switching channel at half time to allow well over an hour of buildup to the Ireland match. Most of the issues I had at the start of their coverage have been resolved but this one still bugs me.

It's ridiculous, there's no need for it to be that long. Like its not even analysis, its pretty much Peter Stringer and Keith Wood talking about what happens in the hotel at the RWC.

God I don't think I've ever complained so much since this world cup started.

Am I hearing Matt Coopers earpiece in the background or am I going mad?

TV3 came back from an ad break. Had a minute of chat then another ad break.

I've been supportive of TV3's coverage this WC - but seriously how many Add's do they squeeze into a segment - ever hear the idea , less is more ...

Find the coverage pretty good myself. Good picture on HD and commentary is grand.

Barnes "You boys nervous here at all?"
Toland "Not as nervous as England were last night"
    :pac:

Matt Cooper: The big match is up NEXT. Cuts to ads.

Do you not mean ads are next?

Exactly, can't imagine the advertisers are overly happy either - good excuse to just get up and head off for five or six minutes.

Shhhh. Everyone does it. It's OK.

    Apparently.

How Matt Williams was given the TV3 rugby gig is beyond me.

Why were they making an argument that Henderson shouldn't have got MotM?

Agreed, the ads are so bad that today I turned on the start of the program and immediately pressed pause. Then I went out to the shops for 30 minutes and came home to begin to watch the build up. I fast forwarded every ad break and noticed that every single one was 5 minutes long at least. At half time it was a 5 minute break followed by 2 minutes of 'analysis' followed by a four minute ad break.

From now on I'm watching our games on a 20 or 30 minute delay. The ads are just overkill so better to watch it on delay and fast forward the fcuk out of them

Other than the ad issue I must say I'm mildly impressed by TV3s efforts. Some of their Champions League coverage has been woeful in the past but they have definitely upped their game for the Rugby WC.

That was seriously cringeworthy , there was genuine worry in that last with 10 mins to go and all Toland could talk about was France next week. Way to complacent.

Yeah the commentary in the last 5 while it was an Italian lineout in our 22 was dreadful. He was talking as if we had a 40 point cushion.

We actually had time to go to the kitchen to eat dinner at half time and literally miss nothing.

Which is better tv3 or itv punditry?

Find TV3 dreadful. Greatly miss the awl gang from RTE at this stage.

Also: found the ingame commentary between Barnes and Toland slightly uncomfortable. Barnes' team went out last night, so not sure why Toland was being so undignified about it.

Could have sworn Toland spoke about Earls having done something after he'd left the field as well.

    "Back in 30 seconds!"

I'm sure there was one point where one of the Irish guys was talking about bringing someone off the bench and Barnes said "I'm not sure why you'd take O'Mahoney off" and you could hear the Irish guy in the background say something like "not him, the other guy".

Not sure if that was Barnes mishearing him or him actually not knowing who the players were.

Also there was a whole thing about "trails" that was particularly awkward.

The "chemistry" in the commentary box was definitely a bit odd. I doubt Barnes and Toland will be on each others' dinner party lists. It will be interesting to see if they share the mike again.

Which is better tv3 or itv punditry?

Haven't watched much of the ITV punditry,

    but TV3 consists of;

Matt asks a question, the panel begin answering the question, Matt then cuts in with another completely unrelated question, followed immediately by "Stay tuned, the guys will answer right after the break"

after a 5 minute break, they cut back to the coverage of the teams just about to kick off the 2nd half.

'If" Ireland do win this World Cup, great as it will be, it just won't be the same due to TV3's horrible horrible coverage of the event.

With RTE/BBC, they make you feel like you are there, absorbing the atmosphere through your TV, with TV3, I just want to buy a new Range Rover, or read Heat magazine or something!!

(I've not even been overly bothered about missing some of the games! I watched the Canada game, missed most of the Romania game due to collecting someone at the airport, missed most (all) of the Italy game yesterday as I was waiting with someone in the emergency room, despite the game being on in the waiting area).

I know I shouldn't feel like this, but with it being on TV3, I just haven't fully gotten into the tournament yet as much as I know I would have if RTE were doing it!!
I never thought something as trivial as what station is showing the games would affect me so much!! but it is.

everything is just all wrong, the TV3 studio, the commentators, the panel/host, the ads, the sense that almost nobody in TV3 knows anything about rugby, the laughable WC logo that has adorned all TV3 programming for the last 2 (and next 4) weeks.

I honestly didn't believe they could do worse than 2007, but they have certainly surpassed it!! (At least in 2007 we were out quick enough, and it didn't bother me so much, but now we've a QF to play, so it's a lot more serious than in 2007).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,823 ✭✭✭✭First Up

The panel is a complete joke and only there so they can pretend to be replicating what we have gotten used to on RTE etc. Their coverage is just about cramming in as many ads as possible.

I just leave the room now and do other stuff - secure in the knowledge that even if they do show the panel, I won't be missing anything.

Which is better tv3 or itv punditry?

    Itv,they had BoD yesterday
Radio one commentary is scarey, it feels like every match is lost with the worry sounding from that lad
    Couldn't listen to it

I think enjoyable TV punditry needs one person in there as a stirrer - coming out with things they don't necessarily believe, but that will get a discussion going, if only to tell him to shut up. The TV3 coverage is very clinical and I'm sure a rugby purist will enjoy it, but it's not going to do anything for the general public. Hook does this for RTE rugby, Dunphy on the football and Neville does it for Sky.

We need less "The slow ruck ball meant that the contact zones were compressed" and more "the other teams have figured us out, we're all doomed and Joe should now feel his job is under threat".

I think TV3 would be fine if they had someone other than Cooper presenting the big matches. The other guy that does some of the "smaller" games is much better as he lets the conversation flow. The pundits that get stuck with Cooper have stopped even trying to make any real points as he keeps interrupting them to ask something else. The main hosts job is to facilitate conversation between the experts, not to actually be a part of the conversation.

I thought Keith Wood was going to deck Cooper on Saturday night. They'd been briefly discussing England's loss and one of them made a point about something and Cooper comes in with "What can Ireland learn from England here?" There was deafening silence for what felt like a full minute before Wood said something like "the silence is deafening". What possible reason is there to ask that question, the situation we're in is so far removed from the England one, there is no reason to ask that question.

Hate the coverage, poor commentary, its as if he has no feel for the game at all, talking away about rubbish when the game is on (look at me ive done some research).
Talking over the ref and then missing what the pen was for and guessing it.

Breaks breaks and more breaks, whats this 30 secs Matt keeps going on about its 5mins!! every time.

Games on tv3 and the second half on 3e is just stupid.

Non existent half time punditry its just ads.

NO HD is a huge cock up, disgraceful that theres no HD for a live sporting event.

Which is better tv3 or itv punditry?

    They're both ****e.

The question i ask myself is should i endure Matt Cooper and his stupid, insipid way or Paloma Faith murdering 'World in Union'.

Its a tough choice. Sometimes i'm not quick enough on the mute button.

The fact that they are now having to say 'back in 30 seconds' shows they're feeling the heat for their shambolic ad campaign.

Lucky you! What about those with Saorview only? Also by putting second half of matches preceding Ireland's games on 3e even viewers on Sky with HD subscriptions miss out on HD coverage.

Thanks for the feedback. I think they both show as many adds as they can so they both are even on that front. Tv3 spend more time going over the game with their analyses so for that reason I will watch the remainder of the tournament with them. They need a bigger set. Matt Williams accent is great craic. Itv punditry is also good but too short in time hence not analytical enough.
