US soldiers told to ignore Afghan allies raping boys

Chilling story on the front of the New York Times right now.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/21/world/asia/us-soldiers-told-to-ignore-afghan-allies-abuse-of-boys.html?smprod=nytcore-iphone&smid=nytcore-iphone-share

Essentially, US soldiers were told by their superiors to ignore US-backed Afghan police officers and commanders who, once they took control of local villages, began sexually abusing boys. Soldiers who intervened are beat up the Afghani paedos were relieved of their command or discharged from the military. Some lines below:

'Rampant sexual abuse of children has long been a problem in Afghanistan, particularly among armed commanders who dominate much of the rural landscape and can bully the population. The practice is called bacha bazi, literally “boy play,” and American soldiers and Marines have been instructed not to intervene — in some cases, not even when their Afghan allies have abused boys on military bases, according to interviews and court records.'

'The American policy of nonintervention is intended to maintain good relations with the Afghan police and militia units the United States has trained to fight the Taliban. It also reflects a reluctance to impose cultural values in a country where pederasty is rife, particularly among powerful men, for whom being surrounded by young teenagers can be a mark of social status. Some soldiers believed that the policy made sense, even if they were personally distressed at the sexual predation they witnessed or heard about.'

'First, they were told, one of the militia commanders raped a 14- or 15-year-old girl whom he had spotted working in the fields. Captain Quinn informed the provincial police chief, who soon levied punishment. “He got one day in jail, and then she was forced to marry him,” Mr. Quinn said.'

Old news, this has been public knowledge for a long time. Look up "the dancing boys of afghanistan" for more information.

In Afghan culture, men are for pleasure, women are for babies. They do not consider it gay to have sex with a man as long as you are the top and not the bottom.

Yeah the traditional lets say pre Christian/Islam societies were big fans of the man/boy dynamic especially from Greece eastwards.

As they say: "The Greeks invented sex. The Romans thought to try it with women."

Saw that documentary a few years back too, it all seemed fairly out in the open alright.

Rape is rape and child abuse is absolutely abominable behaviour.

Whether it's homosexual or heterosexual, it's non consensual and abuse of minors.

Please do not do this thing of trying to conflate sexual orientation and being a despicable rapist! The two have nothing to do with each other.

This stuff is about power and very serious abuse. The US military should step in if they're aware of it. It's a serious human rights violation.

This just reminds me of that idiot David Norris' comments a couple of years back -

Norris: Yes they do but in terms of classic paedophilia, as practiced by the Greeks for example where it is an older man introducing a younger man or boy to adult life, I think that there can be something to be said for that and in terms the North African experience, this is kind of endemic.

Interestingly enough, it carried the death penalty under Taliban rule -

During the Taliban's rule (1994-2001), bacha bazi carried the death penalty. A documentary film by Najibullah Quraishi about dancing boys was screened by the UK Royal Society of Arts on March 29, 2010 and aired by the U.S. TV series PBS Frontline on 20 April 2010." The practice of dancing boys is illegal under Afghan law, being "against both sharia law and the civil code", but the laws are seldom enforced against powerful offenders and police have been reportedly complicit in related crimes.

They need to put some pressure on the Taliban during the peace talks.

It seems it's the usual case of power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

The same crowd that are doing this are probably also going around shouting about being devout Muslims and going on about everyone else being immoral.

The country needs rule of law and normal civil law enforcement. Without that, you've chaos, corruption and gross violations of human rights going on without any control.

Ah the US, steeped in its own self serving hypocrisy...

They are like a wife beater who can be so nice and friendly who turns into a monster when they don't get what they want or their own needs are threatened!

The US military shouldn't be there in the first place.

True, but while they're there they can't really just 'not notice' major human rights abuses.

Think I saw something about UN peacekeepers being disiplined for interfering when women were being raped.
An Irish soldier I think reackoned it wasn't worth the grief he'd get and if she wasn't raped today it would probably happen tomorrow.

Of course they can. The US doesn't give a damn about human rights. Otherwise they wouldn't be arming and funding the ISIS head choppers in Syria and Libya would they? They'd have something to say about Saudi Arabia's catalogue of human rights abuses wouldn't they? They're certainly not going to incur the wrath of local Afghan warlords by taking away their harems of young boys.

Like it or not, these countries have operated like this for milennia. Western style 'morals' or Western law and order simply does not exist nor can it be imposed.

TG4 had a documentary on this, seems widespread in certain Arabian countries too.. Underage camel jockeys etc. Grim.

The Afghan term is 'Bacha Bazi'..

The British soldiers knew about it as well. Afghan units has a tea boy - who was raped by the commander. The Brits referred to 'man love thursday' when the tea boy was abused on Thursday nights, why Thursday - because a good muslim cant do that sort of thing on holy Friday.

And in response to a rapist in Britain getting a longer sentence because his victims were Asian, you wrote:

Yeah, they're all a bunch of child rapists. Every last one of them. Goddamn our political masters for opening the borders to these countries composed entirely of rapists.

The title mentions boys but the example in the OP mentions a girl forced to marry a rapist.

Rape is simply pandemic there, full stop. Some families sell their boys to these local lords for training to be a 'dancing boy'. Girls aren't allowed to dance. They can only be daughters, wives or concubines. Also sold by their families.

    Horrific.

The US are there and it's their job to keep peace and help build a stable country. Step one is to keep the local police and army onside. Preventing paedophilia is not one of the US's objectives.I'll bet they have enough trouble getting the local authorities to cooperate on their stated objectives, let alone going off script and trying to change their practices.

I bet they turn a blind eye to all sorts of illegal behaviour which doesn't effect the mission. They aren't there as a police force. These are exactly the sorts of things you sign up for when you decide to invade another country. It's a case of necessity and the cooperation of the local commanders is necessary to the mission. The number of paedophilia victims is immaterial to the mission.
