Jesus, that's horrendous. I passed him on the gurney at about mile 12 or so, I think. Thoughts with his family at this extremely difficult time. He was so young.

Well done everyone. Gutted to hear about that poor guy that passed away.RIP.

Did my own long run today. Wanted to up the pace to see how far I could go at pmp or better before struggling. Did 33km in 2:59. Felt good for about 25km but was slowing a fair bit after that. Happy overall and I think it sets me up to sneak under 4 hours on the day, all going well.

Apparently, he collapsed at mile 13 about 10 mins before I got there so I must have seen someone else. I didn't notice any commotion near the finish so he must have gotten moved quickly. Hopefully that guy I saw at mile 12 is okay too.

We're all so caught up in times and paces and how fast we'll get to that finish line, it's probably a good time to reflect on how important those things are in the greater scheme of things.

Goal A. Stay healthy. Stay well. Make it over the finish line. Make it home.

So true. I can't help thinking of him leaving the house this morning never for a second thinking he wouldn't make it home.

So sorry to hear this. May he RIP. Thoughts go out to his family and friends, as well as the primary care givers at the scene. I know some of you passed him towards the finish and came in very shaken. Big hug again to PJD, Toulouse and anyone else who saw this tragic scene.....

As a mark of respect, if you don't mind guys, I'll save any feedback for today until tomorrow/Monday. It seems a little out of place to celebrate right now x

Thanks Dubgal and completely agree. I'm not going to do my report until tomorrow. It just seems so trivial now.

I purposely didn't look but one look at PJDs face said it all. Horrible.

May he rest in peace and my thoughts are with his family

Shocking to hear about that poor young lad. I passed him while he was on the stretcher, but had no idea how serious it was.

It was great to meet some of you today. Sorry I couldn't hang around as I was running with a mate & I went back to find him.

I'll post a report tomorrow. Take care all.

Yes, terrible terrible news, our thoughts are with his family, cannot image how hard it is for them right now. I saw the medics in a panic trying to help him, but like a lot of people didn't realize how much trouble he was in.RIP.

I ended up in James' Hospital after the race this evening after my friend who was doing his first ever race collapsed at 12 miles, banged his head off a steel pole/rail and was rushed to hospital in an ambulance. I actually passed him at about 11.5 miles and I asked him if he was ok and he just blurted out 'knackered', I just thought that he had gone out too fast and blew up a little, but was fine and was going to trot on home to the finish line.

We were trying to ring him after the race and we thought that he had just headed off after the race in bad form, it turns out that he was skipping the water stations, maybe to keep with the 1:50 pacers and he became totally dehydrated and collapsed. We only found out that something was wrong when the results came up and he was 'DNF'.

I rang around and went to Donore Harriers and they gave me his bag and went on down to James' to see him laid out on a stretcher with an IV in his arm, with no recollection of how he got there. He has damaged his kidneys (short term damage hopefully) and has a 'mark' on his heart that they hope will pass in a few days.......scary stuff.

They are keeping him in overnight due to the bang on the head as a precaution and hopefully will be allowed home with a heart monitor for a few weeks just to make sure that all is ok.

We are all still a bit shook up from it if I am honest, he had a lucky escape with hopefully no long term damage done. I think that today was deceptively warm/humid as I witnessed at least 3 other runners passing out on the Chesterfield Avenue and the Upper Glen Road.

    Run safe,
    Smashiner.

So sorry to hear about your friend Smashiner. It must have been some shock for you to see the DNF, hopefully there's no lasting damage. It's an easy mistake that any one of us here could make :(

It also drives home why number swapping isn't allowed.

Also so very sad to hear of the passing of the young runner, ar dheis de go raibh an anim

    Hi Chrislad,
Yes, that sounds about right as he collapsed just after I passed him out, I had no idea how much trouble he was in when I caught up with him. At the start of the race he asked me to run with him, but I said that I was minding a niggle and was going take a bit handier and I told him to trust the pacers and he would be fine.

The pacers did an amazing job yesterday as a few of my friends were in that group, but my friend who collapsed told me in the hospital that he rarely takes water with him even on a training run. In some ways he was probably lucky that after he collapsed, he had the right people around him to get him safely to the hospital, great job by the race organizers BTW, had he collapsed on a training run in a field with no one around who knows what the outcome would be......harsh lesson learned.

My friend said that he wasn't thirsty at all but his heart rate started to soar and his breathing started to become erratic and then he blacked out. Hydration is so important, I saw a lot of people crash at the DCM last year in similar warm/humid conditions....let's all learn from this and make sure that we hydrate before, during and after a run, even if we think that we are fine.

Thanks all for the kind words, I will tell him that people were asking for him and wishing him a full and speedy recovery.
    Smash.

    Race report
Got up at 06.45 had breakfast of readybreak at had used last of poridge morning before and forgot to replace. Did usual stretching & pack up bag and then after
Usual good lucks from family set off to collect 3 others also running race.

Have to say enjoy chatter on way in how everyone feeling & expected times, how
    Week has gone.

Got to park nice & early, meet MrsMC & FBOT walking up the road, walk along
have bit of chat,Love meeting up with them and other runners like PJD, who are
always good humoured and have a laugh & put you in good frame of mind for
    Run to come.

Meet some other runners from park run, including JOC who is injured & on cheering duties, he asked me what time hoping for, told him I was going with
1.50 pacers, as one of run buds was running with them and the conservative
Runner in me thought would be enough of test. But thought I could go faster
So he said do best run u can and don't be disappointed finishing with lots
    In tank.

Dropped off bags & ran with my usual crew for warm up, spot FBOT warming
Up, looks in the zone so do not draw his attention. Warm up done and head in
Behind 1.50 pacers with run bud, conservative me wins the day. Other run bud
Wants to go under 1.40 so heads down to his group.

Walking to start line very congested, get to line and off we go. Meno was pacing
    this group.

    Mile 1. 8.22
Mile 2. 8.16 getting into rythem, but so congested very stop start at
Times as group slows and starts, never got so many elbows.
Mile 3. 8.14 run bud tells me can't stay pace & told me to head on about 3.5
Miles. So then I thought maybe I can chase down faster time, and give it a
Good try. Pass Meno and was going to say hello but he was surourounded
    By bodyguards on all sides.
Mile 4. 8.04 Mrs G & others cheering on all runners we know.
Mile.5,6 7.48,7.55 take small water bottle with me, as getting warm, and
    Take gel.
Mile 7. 7.38 see I am puling back time so decide to open up a bit and see
    If 1.46 on,
Mile 8. 7.44 bit of a hill but passing other runners
Mile 9,10 7.31 & 7.25 on the flat feeling really good.
Mile. 11 7.42 see 5 k to go and knowing hills coming decide to treat as
Comfortable park run home as had put in few hard miles and could see was
    Well inside any time expantation.
Mile 12. 8.21 hitting hills so try hold effort but ease pace.
Mile 13. 8.17 lots of well wishers cheering, but had not got kick in legs
    that had in 10 miles.
    Finished 1.44.55

So first ever half like lots on here, got caught in two minds of Goal for race
but worked out ok. And glad all of crew here finished in realitavly good order.
Sorry to hear about Smashiner friend, hopefully he will be back running soon.
2 of people that came with me where not to good after race, but nothing rest
And re hydrating has not sorted thankfully.

I got up at about 5:30am to get the 6:20am train up! Got up to Heuston about 8:20, grabbed a porridge and banana and sat down and ate those. Met TFGR on the way out of Heuston and said a quick hello. I planned to do warm up run to the start but when I saw the shuttle bus, I got lazy, plus I was carrying a bag. Got up there and stored the back and did a slow 1 mile warm up. I got up the start of wave 3 and talked with Joe and Olwyn for a few minutes, lovely couple. I was starting with the aim of getting a sub 2. My previous two HM races were 2:27 in Ballybunnion in April and 2:11 in Limerick in May. I hadn't actually raced since then, bar the odd park run so I was a bit anxious about it.

    Mile 1: 9:08

Very, very congested. Started off fine, but I had a lot of people clipping my heels and while I tried not to weave, there were a few people who clearly should have been a bit further back!

    Mile 2: 9:06

Started to clear up a bit here but still a bit crowded. I still felt fairly comfortable, and was chatting with a guy from the PhoenixParkRunners club, whose name I didn't get.

    Mile 3: 8:55

Passing the zoo, and I wished for an ice cream. I was getting a bit hot so glad to see the water station coming up at the end of this.

    Mile 4: 9:05

This got a little congested again at the corner. Person near me took a bad hop, but some silly runner stopped and tried to pick up his water bottle. Yeah, she was being nice, but she almost sent me and a couple of others to the ground when she stopped and bent down! The guy was already back on his feet by the time she stopped so it was a bit needless. He seemed okay. I think I heard him say someone clipped his heel.

    Mile 5: 9:14

Congestion again as the turn slowed things down a bit. Still feeling fairly good.

    Mile 6: 9:15

Threw away my bottle in anticipation of the next water station. It was Lucozade Sport though! NOOOOOOOOOO! Grand for drinking, not so much for spraying on the head and back! Countdown to next water station commencing!

    Mile 7: 9:06

Small hill but I was expecting it as I ran it in the MoRunning 10k last year. Went up the hill grand, and still felt fairly okay.

    Mile 8: 9:04

Back onto the main stretch. Mentally, I knew this was a bit downhill. I was feeling a little tired, but this kept me going.

    Mile 9: 8:53

Much the same. Joe was near enough to me, making bad jokes and threatening people with no wine if they finished above 2.

    Mile 10: 9:01

Felt pretty good. One guy was getting tired, so tried to perk him up a bit with only 3 miles to go. Little did I know how long that would feel......

    Mile 11: 9:38

Here's where it started to go all Pete Tong. Joe was trumpeting not to let him pass you. I was a good bit ahead of him so I wasn't too worried. My glutes started feeling a bit tight, and like a switch, I just couldn't keep the pace. It was either really push myself, or just pull back and not injure myself. Gong through my head was The main thing is the main thing so I pulled back. The way I was looking at it was that even if I didn't hit my 2:00:00 target, I was still well on for a pb.

    Mile 12: 11:05

I was well into recovery run pace as this stage. That last drag was really tough on me and a good number of people were stop/starting around me. I pass smashes friend on the stretcher at this point, and I'm glad to hear he's on the mend. I know I sweat an awful lot when I'm doing a long distance, so I keep myself well hydrated, I could go through over a litre of water on a long run.

    Mile 13: 11:05

Same as the previous mile. Just work on through it. Once I got the the intersection, I knew how far I had to go so I said I'd see if I could do anything of a sprint finish to somewhat redeem myself. I saw 2:00:00 pass on my watch, but I knew that I wouldn't be far after it, and definitely well ahead of my last one.

    Mile 13.1 : 7:13

There was a bit of a sprint left in the legs! Got over the line in 2:03:29 and made a conscious effort not to look shagged for the camera! We'll see when the pictures come online! :D

Overall, I was a small bit disappointed (like 1%) but after talking to frash afterwards, he has the same difficulty with the last two miles that I had which made me feel a little better (sorry, frash! :D )

It was great to catch up with a number of ye, and thanks to TFGR for the flapjacks! Hit the spot after! I nearly spent too long talking to ye as I had a 2pm train to catch. I got the shuttle bus but traffic was so bad that I had to get off and run to the station. Legs did not appreciate that, but I did count it as my cool down so there's that. I made it onto the train at 13:59:56 according the the train clock! At least that was one target I hit!

I got PBs for 10k, 10mile, 15k, 20k and HM so it was a good day at the races! Glutes are a bit tight today so just foam rolling them and will do a short recovery run this evening. Looking ahead, it going to be a tough week!

On the plan this was down as a LT session(7 miles @ HMP). My legs were still a bit tender from the weekends HM so i started out with the intention of sticking to the plan but i had a plan B:) just in case. 1st mile was ok but with the increase in pace over the next 3 miles the legs were not happy so plan B(PMP) kicked into action for the next 7 miles and i finished with a mile cool down. While it wasnt what the plan called for it was still a tough work out on what were tired legs.

    Friday: 5 miles @9:22 REC

This was a nice progressive run which was fairly uneventful till the last mile when my right thigh/groin area started to tighten up, so i eased off the pace. I putting the pain down to the fact that this was my highest mileage week and my longest run of this training cycle, there is no pain there now.

Well done to everyone running over the weekend.

I made a few mistakes yesterday that messed up my race a bit. I started in wave 3 between the 2:00 and 2:10 pacers. I was hoping to do around 2:05 so I reckoned that I would try to stay behind the 2:00 pacer and if I dropped back a bit it wouldn't be a problem. Off we went and I stayed with the 2:00 pacer till the first water station, I picked up a bottle but didn't drink it at that stage. I had overhydrated an needed to make an unscheduled convenience stop. When I rejoined the pacer was well ahead, I tried to catch up a bit over the next couple of miles. Around 6m I started to feel pain from my right foot (toes), at this stage I still had the 2:00 balloons in sight. As we worked our way down Chesterfield ave the pain increased and the balloons disappeared. At the turn onto Conyngham rd I noticed a red stain had appeared on my runner just where the pain was. I had slowed down a bit a this stage and the 2:10 pacer passed me at chapelizod gate. I tried to stay with them but didn't have anything left. I finished at 2:13:03. My second smallest toenail had lifted and bled quite a bit, I can only presume I didnt cut it properly or perhaps I need better socks.

    1. I should have started with the slower pacer and speeded up if I had enough left towards the end
    2. I shouldn't have tried to catch the 2:00 pacer after my toilet stop.
    3. I need to pay more attention to my footcare and preparation.
    4. Although I had taken too much liquid on board the consequences of not taking enough are far more serious than a loss of time. So I won't worry about that.

It was my first half marathon and I learned a lot.
