Hang on, is this actually a thing now? Because I'm 100% sure that it started as a Far Side cartoon. I remember Gary Larson writing about how it took him ages to come up with the name and toying with 'duckalookaphobia'.

I should not have googled tryptophobia. (Fear of stuff with small holes, to save anybody else the same fate).
Not sure I'm scared of it but the pictures have made me oddly nauseous.

Apparently it's not officially recognised yet, but it's thought that the sight of all holes all together evokes some kind of primitive reaction in people, because it reminds them of decay or alerts them that it might be a dangerous substance.

People's phobias vary. Like some people can't bare the look of Aero bar or suds or english crumpets, but I'd have no problem with those. I've had trytophobic tendencies for years but told nobody because I felt like a freak. My sister is worse though. Barnacles freak her out, lotus flowers too, and if she's eating corn on the cob, she can't look at the, er, bit that the sweetcorns are stuck too. Also, if the ends of feathers are left in the skin of a bird, that freaks both of us out due to the holes created, especially if they are in clusters. We are freaks!

That's spell checker for you! I think someone in Microsoft had some really malicious fun with some of the spelling suggestions. I remember years ago the cantine at work had a menu up offering "Pizza with aborigines".

No spellcheck in graphic design software. I, unfortunately, know this from a bad day a previous job where some v. expensive stuff arrived with the word 'secruity' on it in 72pt text. :( It also doesn't catch errors when the error is a word too so even if you sort out text in a programme with spellcheck, as you're supposed to, you can still get a warm plate of delicious tripe cookies.

Ugh, work flashbacks :( If there's a word for 'a fear of small holes all together' there has to be a word for 'the triggered feeling you get when you see bad examples of work that are slightly related to things you have messed up in the past'

    I generally use extra virgin olive oil for shallow frying etc.. this brand;

I use sunflower oil for deep frying, that's about the only thing I use it for.

Apparently there's an In n Out burger pop up in Bread and Bones in Dublin until 3 (Or maybe 4 - I've seen both times mentioned!)

While I think In-n-Out does the best burger in the whole universe, I doubt it'll taste the same as you'd get in California, as the local fresh vegetables play a massive part in the overall flavour. I'll still give it a try though.

I use sunflower oil for any Chinese/Indian/ Vaguely Asian foods and olive oil otherwise. If i'm out of either i don't loose sleep about it.

I've started making buckwheat pancakes a lot. My mix for 1 person is 1 egg, 70g flour and around 100ml milk. Milk is not something i keep in the house very often. Is there anything i can sub in instead of it so i don't have to go to the shop when i want to make them? I'm guessing it is mostly just to thin out the batter. I would experiment with water, or yogurt + water or something, but most evenings if i ended up with a disaster i would probably cry^^ Any ideas?

Thanks re the oil, I just wondered as I tend to use Olive Oil but then most chefs say its only suitable for salads etc.... its better to use either Sunflower or perhaps Rapeseed?

And while on the subject what do you use walnut oil for.

I got it as a substitute for xv olive oil in pesto as I decided I was going to try walnut pesto. Never got around to it and the bottle is still in the press waiting for use.

It can give a lovely flavour to salad dressing.

I use sunflower oil for everything except Asian food, when I use sesame oil. I save the olive oil for dressings and stuff I'm not going to cook.

I'd only ever use sesame oil to flavour food. I'd never cook in it.

+1, delicious as a dressing oil. Or for dipping nice bread into.

Most things I read recommend against using sesame oil for frying, only for drizzling on later. Whenever I use sesame oil I get people commenting on it, I love the smell going by chinese restaurants.

In many shops its a blend of sesame and veg oil, I expect this would fry better. A little goes a long way.

I usually fry in butter, pork/beef fat or coconut oil, depending on what it is.

I'd love to go on an oil tasting session, like a wine tasting but with different types of olive and other seeds/nuts oil. Some nice crusty bread to dip in each.

I use sunflower/rape seed oil for roasting spuds and deep frying, Aldi's cooking olive oil for most other things. EV olive oil for salads. Toasted sesame oil is drizzled on stir frys after cooking.
