Top tip to surviving social events as a marathoner in training (also used in runners guide to surviving Christmas festivities in one piece) :D

    Secret weapon

Helps that they actually taste nice!

Just got new pair of Marathon runners today, going to try
them during week, if all goes well is it ok to wear for half
or is it better to break in further over next couple weeks.

They are upgraded version of present shoe, so feel will
    Likely to be same.

    Thanks
    G

Hi G, run your Wed run in the them and if there is no issues then no reason why you couldn't wear them on Saturday. After that I would rotate them with the older ones using the older ones for the shorter easy runs and using the new one for the longer stuff. This will help you get more miles out of both pairs.

Hi all, haven't been on in a while, still battling this hip flexor problem, trying to get a physio appointment for today or tomorrow, ran a 5k race yesterday in 20:30, hip stiffened afterwards. racing half on Saturday will try and get through week with lowish mileage and then hopefully be back on track after half .
Sorry to hear that CHS, but well done on the (possibly unwise ;) ) 5k. Hopefully the physio visit will set you on the right track. Let us know how it goes won't you?

All good, boss. Two days rest seem to have sorted it out. It was the lower front part of the shin, just above the ankle. It's still a little sensitive but it didn't bother me during the LSR yesterday.
Good good N but all the same, keep an eye on it, but I know you will :)

Thanks diego, we're lucky here that we have such good material to work with ;) and actually really nice to know we're appreciated.... :)

Hi Dubgal, as already mentioned, epic. When I was finishing my LSR on Saturday I was thinking I was finished following my own non-plan. But I hit the road at midday today and within 500m was getting up to a nice warmed up pace and felt good. Couldnt help it, I did 8 miles altogether, 5 at 5miler pace and eased off then for the last 3 to cool down. Kick me outta the class if you have to for not following your advice on easy running :D, I am following all your advice when it comes to running 5 days (thats the hardest one), the 35:65 ratio well I came in at 39%. If I blow up and get injured you can use me as an example of how not to do it , I just find it hard to slow down some days. "Tomorrows run will be slower" (sounds like 'I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today'). In the back of my head I am thinking I can do better than 4 hours on the big day and may change my answers to your 6th question in post 1.
Hehe JMSE, you'll be grand. You can't lie to a marathon and we'll see on the day whether what you've done is enough. Could be you have in which case I'll buy you a pint...or a hamburger :pac: Sorry, remind me, are you doing the half this weekend?
Second sport massage session tomorrow. Really feeling the need for it so thankful it's not a long wait now! Legs are ok today though considering. Only really feeling stiff when going up and down stairs.
Let us know how it goes :)

Happy to report my 3 mile recovery run went well tonight. No problems, no demons. Phew! Legs feel really good for it. I'll report on the sport massage session tomorrow evening.

Just want to say I'm really grateful for this thread, fellow novices and Dubgal. I couldn't be doing this without you!

With that said, good night, all! Sleep well and dream beautifully!

    So I am a Langer!!

Went for 3M recovery jog this evening (hotel treadmill). Ran really slowly and ended up stopping at 2.5M and walked the rest. Felt fine.... Until after I had a shower and headed out for dinner. After about 1 minute walking down the street I could hardly walk! Severe pain on top of right foot which I think is an extensor issue. Have been icing it since I got back but am VERY annoyed (this morning I posted about how happy I was with the lack of niggles etc)
Am not back to Ireland til Wed so am going to book a physio appt and take a couple of days off. High level googling suggests that this is not a serious issue so hopefully can get it resolved in a couple days!!!

    Arrgggghhh #%$¥!!

    Secret weapon[/QUOTE]

+1 to Erdinger Alco Free MS, had one after my LSR today....it is basically a sports drink (isotonic, low cal etc)that tastes like beer....everyone wins ;)

LSR Numbers from today: 28, 2:45, 6,3,1 and Zero.
28K ran today in 2:45, 6 Jelly Babies, 3 gels, 1 Erdinger and most importantly Zero Nurofen!!

I was a bit worried about today's LSR as I needed to rest a niggly ankle for the past 4 days, sore Achilles tendon I reckon. I made a decision not to wear my ankle support (10 years of wearing a support post footie)........best decision ever as my ankle is a little stiff but not in anyway sore....still scratching my head on this one?? Maybe the support was too restrictive and was fine for footie for impacts but not ok for running......anyone else come across this before?

The LSR went great for about 22K and then a dodgy gel cramped my stomach for about 10 minutes and I had to massage it as I ran. The next 6K were a bit hit and miss with the last 2K being more of a 'shuffle' than a run

Over the moon to be back in the game....looking forward to the HM on Saturday.

It's high time that I say thanks to everyone who is contributing to this thread.

It has become part of my routine each evening after my run to put my feet up and read though all the posts. The advice here is brilliant and reading others experiences has made me realise that the ups and downs I have been going through are pretty normal..... so thanks all and hopefully we all make it to the start line in Dublin in one piece :)

The Achilles is an area of low blood supply at the best of times could have been that the support was even more restrictive of this blood supply and removing it allowed the area to actually properly warm up.

Not a big fan of supports better to strength and rehabilitate an area than restrict it as evidence is leaning towards your body actually being more injury prone when area's such as the ankle and food are restricted (solid papers coming out on this regarding the comfort in shoes being one of the better indicators for injury prevention with relation to footwear)

Only got the rest of my plan today, had assumed today would be a rest day and was booked for a massage. Plan had 30-40minutes easy on it and knowing I couldn't fit it in I asked my trainer could I do it in the morning and he replied later to say OK but of course in the mean time I realised I was starting work tomorrow at 7:30 so resigned to having to get up at 5:30 to run.

In the end things worked out for me to get 35 minutes in before massage. I ended up having a sob during my run. Thankfully it was raining so no one would have noticed the tears streaming down my face. I don't even know what I was crying about. Tiredness most likely. A mix between how far I've come but also how far I've left to go. Giving myself a hard time for not being fitter, when 18 months ago I couldn't run for 4 minutes. I dunno. Just all kind of hit me today.

Massage hurt like hell, my calves were tight and very sore but she wasn't worried too much about them, my quads she said were really bad but they're all done now and I'm feeling a lot more calm.

I'm looking forward to rest day tomorrow, that's not because I don't love running, it's because my legs need a rest and my head needs to be normal for a day so I'm going out for dinner and will have a glass of wine like normal people do.

Thanks so much lads, if it wasn't for ye I'd have given up by now :)

Sports massage this evening serious works on calves and Achilles got work done on the rest of my legs and my back where I had some knots starting to build up. Legs feel good today but will make conscious effort to drink plenty tomorrow too. Off to bed now. :)

So as per the plan it was a 6 & 4 mile this week and then rest until Sat. I went out and did the 6 mile yesterday. At about mile 3.5, I noticed a pain in my toe (toe next to the little one) It went away which was grand. However by last night it was nice and bruised and sore. I must have hit it off something but don't remember doing so. Going to leave the 4 mile now and hope it's ok for Sat as I will be gutted if I can't to the half!

    Just a little moan........

EDIT: Am afraid to ask if it's still sore by Sat, could I just tape it up or something!

EDIT (again!) - Just got to work and it wasn't too bad to walk on. Think I had a little panic attack over it when I woke up! Won't run on it today anyways and fingers crossed for Saturday!

Feeling a lot better today so I'm going to give a 3 mile run a go at lunch time and see what happens. If it's good, I'll do the 4 mile tomorrow, rest on Thursday, and then the 2 mile before Saturdays half.

5miles done before work this morning as I now have class Tuesday evenings.
    Mile 1 9:19
    Mile 2 10:30
    Mile 3 9:30
    Mile 4 10:32
    Mie 5 9:50
As usual not at all consistent. It's something I really need to work on. Might be an early morning run convert, found it very exhilarating being on the roads just as everyone was waking up.

4 miles done yesterday evening, did a small little bit of the marathon route that runs by my house, up the rather long drag on St. Laurence Rd. and along Sarsfield up into Inchicore. 4 miles @ 10:44/mi

Then 8 miles this morning into work. Unusually I didn't meet any other runners today!!

    12:21
    11:43
    11:18
    11:16
    10:46
    10:49
    10:58
    10:18

Am feeling pretty tired in general and the legs were heavy this morning. Sports massage tomorrow and I can't wait, bloody sick of rubbing my own legs. Ankle holding up fine so not worried about it.

Then 30 easy minutes on Thursday and I should be good to go on Saturday!

+1 on the non-alco Erdinger, I drink it in general anyway if I'm being good. My friends were shocked when I told them it was isotonic :D

Aww Whoopsa!! I'd say it was a mix of tiredness and pride in how far you've come. I fully expect to cry when we hit College Green on the big day.

You should be fine. Do your 4 miles the day before and if there's no reaction you'll know that you're fine. If there is then you can skip the half safe in the knowledge that had you run it you would have had a much more serious problem but pound to a penny you'll be fine to run on Saturday.

So woke up this morning after a bad nights sleep (worrying about my foot).... and guess what - no pain in my foot and I can walk absolutely normally this morning.
I am taking this as a positive indicator but am still going to rest it today and tomorrow along with going to the physio (luckily I sit on my ass all day for work which should help)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,459 ✭✭✭ZV Yoda

Woke up yesterday & foot felt fine, but wore runners all day in an effort to cushion / support foot (just in case). Ran 6k this am (switched back to new runners). No foot pain. Pushed myself pace-wise to really test out the foot. Started at 5:53/km and continually increased the pace, finishing at 4:50/km. Nothing broke or fell off. I dunno. Maybe all this running has turned me into a bit of a hypochondriac. 10k to do tomorrow, then 2 days rest before the HM.

I'd like to echo the comments of others above: Dubgal - I don't know how / where you get the time to devote so much energy & enthusiasm into the thread, but it is much appreciated. As for the rest of you - it's reassuring to know everybody else has their ups & downs as the mileage starts ramping up. It's hard to believe there's only 6 weeks left to the big day.

Even better - only 3 weeks to the final taper!
