Nice shot. Why the treadmill runs in Genoa? Seem to remember some really good seaside walkways there, on the south eastern side of the city. Some good hills too! (mind you this was long before running entered my consciousness).

Laziness to be honest! We stayed in a very nice hotel but it's location (just beside the docks) didn't really appeal. I really should have ventured out though but the view from my window was a maze of roads so decided not to. Really like the city though. Unbelievable pizza place was discovered! Terrible service but you have to forgive when the food is that good!

A distinct lack of focus this week. I feel like I am running well but not progressing. Running still if you will. I really wanted to run the Tullamore Half but with work in Mayo that night, it would have meant returning to Dublin or killing 5/6 hours in Tullamore. Hindsight is a great thing because I should have just ran it. With Charleville now very much on the horizon, I am quickly running out of time. Every weekend is a busy one so I am not sure how to approach the race. I know myself that I need to pin a number and run a race before then. A trip to Galway and Cork this weekend rules out The Lakes 10km.

So, not sure what to do at the moment in all honesty. I need things to click pretty quickly. If they don't I have a feeling of a very flat performance come the 20th. Added to all that it will be All-Ireland Final Day. A serious predicament in on the cards when Dublin dispatch Mayo back to the west on Saturday! #1951. I felt myself clock-watching a lot this week. Not a good sign it must to be said. Time to get a second wind and regain the focus and drive lost. Running this week has become more about a habit than a hobby (albeit a very important one).

A session to blow away some cobwebs. I didn't run this with any great enthusiasm. A session to tick a box.

A near disastrous run. I ran the entire thing very negatively. I planned on 18-20 but I pulled the plug after 16. In fact I got a very bad stitch for the first time ever, meaning a brief stop very close to home. Just one of those runs.

    Sunday 30/8

    13.60 Miles @7.13p/m in 1.38:04

Great to get out the door early and head to Donadea. Very tired throughout the run (4 hours sleep) but fantastic to have it done quite early. I mainly ran this with Eoin, we were both content that the pack would do their job :). A few steady miles towards the end rounded off an enjoyable run. Great morning and even better cake. Back just in time for the game. Cue an angry man shouting at the tv!

    Splits (800m): 2.40, 2.37, 2.36, 2.37

The change of pace was tough to adjust to. I took one rep at a time but felt like I was flogging a dead horse and getting very little from it. Maybe I was but it certainly did not feel like it. I decided to change the emphasis and hit the sharp hill next to the cinder track. The legs felt like they needed something shorter, harder and snappier. I am still not too sure whether the choice was a good one but I think it was. Once again, a session by myself. I have no doubt if I had company for the odd session I would find it mentally a lot easier. That's more than half the battle.

A 24 hour hotel bar? Yes, please!

A(nother) late night meant a tight window to run, with a long drive to Youghal, Cork to look forward to. A really pleasant run from Salthill towards Bearna. The promenade was thronged with runners. Fantastic to see. Crackin' day for it. Goodbye hangover........

I planned to meets the lads on the canal at 8.15am but after setting the alarm for 7.55 I overslept and missed them. I guess hittng the bed at 5 and planning a run for 8 might not the the best approach anyway! I was keen to get this run over with a trip to see the All-Ireland was on the cards for the afternoon. One of those 'I don't want this to end runs'.

As for the final? The West is most definitely not awake! Now to get tickets for the 20th.

    4.06 (5.30p/m)
    4.05 (5.28p/m)
    4.03 (5.26p/m)

I aimed for laps of 82-83. That's about where I see my current 10km fitness. Although that's just an educated guess at this juncture. I have found the past few sessions quite tough mentally. The penny finally dropped today as to why. I simply don't have a concrete plan like I had with the Magness Plan. I haven't fully committed to a certain plan and I can only blame myself for that. I thrive on security and certainty, not on an unfocused outline. I need to fully commit to everything here on in and nail my colours to the mast.

The session itself was somewhat challenging but far from a killer. I could have done another rep or two so there was something still left in the tank. Every lap was once again similar to a fartlek session; hard slog down the back-straight and coast the home-straight. You have to love the wind in Kilbogget. Not!

    *I should have done 6, not 5 reps. I made a mistake

    PM

5 Miles Very Easy (grass) @7.40p/m in 38:26

A few monotonous laps of Sean Moore Park rounded off the day. At least it should have.

I did it again. A real man learns from his mistakes. Me? I bloody well repeat them!

We returned to the car (she was playing in the Gaa tournament in the park). I was starving and looking forward to dinner. I went as usual to my trusty wheel to retrieve my car key. At this stage it's a well rehearsed routine. In my haste I pushed the key off the wheel. No biggie. I looked around on the ground and my luck was definitely out. Sh!te. We did everything but there was no sign. I even managed to push the car a few feet to help in the search. We both looked at each-other. The shore. Could it have somehow fallen down? Despite being four feet away from the wheel I had no option. Desperate times, desperate measures. I won't lie, it was disgusting. Worse still there was still no sign. Imagine if I was recognised!

It was now time to seriously swallow the man pride and call in the professionals. An hour later the breakdown man called. Thank God, a real man. It had come to this. He must have thought I was the biggest idiot alive. Maybe I am. He raised the car and a nervous few minutes ensued. The key finally popped out. It was so lodged he almost missed it. I could have kissed him. Maybe I should have kissed him .....

One idiot. One mechanic. 90 minutes. One run.

This time I have finally learned my lesson. I thought I did the last time with Andy in the Phoenix Park but obviously I did not.

    I am one idiot!

Enjoyable run all the same :)........

I'm more terrified of it falling out and having to retrace my steps. I see that some of the lads I train with hold their keys in their hand. That would wreck my head!

you can unlace your shoes and lace your keyring in. It won't come out unless the lace or the ring breaks
    or get a little armwallet
if I carry my keys, I usually put one finger through the keyring so I can hold the keys loosely

That's very handy. I will definitely give it a go. thanks.

I might not need to anymore though.....I left the passenger window fully open for an hour today in PP. Thank God Peter noticed! Who needs keys, eh?! :)

are you heading to Charleville this weekend?

Well that's the plan. I have gone through a bit of a rough patch over the weekend. Very rough in fact. Had to pull everything back as the general feeling of feeling bollixed (excuse the language!) was at times overwhelming. I had to knock a race on Saturday on the head as I could barely walk. I think I have turned the corner but I will fully decide tomorrow. Not good!

Looks like you are well set for a very good race.

I was worryingly tired today. Normally the morning run is a slog to begin with but today was different. An overwhelming sense of fatigue.

    Friday 11/9

    5.25 Miles Easy @7.03p/m in 37:06

With plan to run the Fearns Half the next day (@6.00p/m for the first 10 and then pick it up), this was to a simple easy run to just keep myself ticking over. In a last ditch attempt to prove to myself that 'everything is ok', I subconsciously pushed the pace. I was very tired for the remainder of day. Getting in from work at 2am did not help matters. To make things even worse I couldn't even sleep. Typical.

Everything points to over-training. Alarm bells.

    Saturday 12/9

Waking up just after 7am I tried to must up enough energy to get in the car. I just couldn't. I told myself to get out of bed and even just head down to Marlay Park and give the 5km a bash. I got up and my legs screamed. Everything hurt.

Morale and general love for running hit rock bottom but I did manage this:

    10 Miles Easy @7.19p/m in 1.13:10

Everything hurt, from my right heel to left hamstring to my, well, everything. At least it proved my decision to be the correct one. Go me. Not.

    Sunday 13/9

    12.25 Miles Easy @7.07p/m in 1.27:17
    -inc. 5x30sec strides @3k effort

Roll on October (the quiet season). In bed late once again. Why does Wicklow make no sense? I mean, door to door the trip was only 46 miles but it took forever. No road marking, lethal corners, shocking road conditions. Rant over!

Despite the truly awful conditions run was an enjoyable one. I have not turned the corner just yet but I think I may have spotted it.

The plan of a 90+ mile week was quickly pulled in.....

    WEEK TOTAL: 71.75+ MILES

The worst week of training in quite some time.

Not sure if it's any consolation but reckon you have a bug - three out of five of us in the house the same - absolutely no energy(totally drained), headaches, light headed & a bit queasy at times. Hope you perk up soon

    Perhaps. You may be right.

Something tells me it's something else. Think it just points to over doing it and not getting proper sleep. I'll see how this week goes before making a proper call on the weekend.

I keep telling myself to get to bed early but it's extremely hard. Give me half the chance and I will go nocturnal!

    Couple of observations there DR...

    - The pace on your easy/recovery runs still rarely goes below 7:30 m/m. I'm not being smart but is it a mental thing that you can't slow to an 8 minute mile? For me you're not properly recovering on your 'in between' days.

    - On Saturday you woke up feeling like crap, you're not getting proper sleep and you know the signs of over training are there yet you still went and "managed" 10 miles @ 7:19 m/m. Why didn't you just take the day off? That 10 miles probably compounded the fatigue.

    - 6 days before a half marathon (and one you've been targeting for weeks) you do a 20 mile run. I fail to see see any logic there, it's only adding to the tiredness and it's not like you have anything to prove.

    - You go into a week with a plan of hitting 90+ miles or whatever. Forget about the weekly milage and just focus on getting the important sessions in while listening to the body and recovering sensibly, the milage at the end of the week is what it is.

    - You got some really solid weeks with quality sessions in recently and you were flying but I never spotted a pull back week. Maybe you need to start thinking about these, a week where you just run easy, relax and enjoy it and forget about sessions.

Hope I'm not being harsh but just calling it out like I see it, purely my opinion and I'm far from perfect in my training. I want to see you do well as you've got bags of talent (also, we have a lot of battles ahead of us).

I subconsciously decided to take a break from the log until the mojo returned. I am happy to report it's back! There were no earth-shattering sessions but a distinct improvement in form and attitude. I have consciously decided to not be so hard on myself and well, 'go with the flow'.......let's see how long that lasts!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,065 ✭✭✭dublin runner

    11 Days to Eindhoven.

The plan this week is to reduce the mileage (100+mpw to 80-85mpw) and freshen up for Sunday week. I am really looking forward to flying out next Friday. I have checked the recent results and to my surprise the standard wasn't what I had expected. Charleville, for example, would traditionally have a deeper field and a higher quality overall. I guess the full marathon takes away from the standard of the half. Anyway, nothing I can do about that and I am sure if I race smartly I will have company. The long run will be the Athlone 3/4 on Sunday where I will pace the 3 hour marathon group (7.15p/m). I would like to get and do a race on Saturday and run it on tired legs. I will have a look and think about that before committing.

Having some spare time around lunch time meant I could skip a very early morning run (i'm awful in the mornings!) and tip around Portlaoise. An incredibly beautiful September afternoon that saw one of these most mind numbing boring runs ever! I just never got into it. Give me the big smoke any day. Back to the car and many more hours of teaching.

    Wednesday 30/9
    14+ Miles

    AM

    7.5+ Miles inc. drills/strides

Session: 6x1km @10km effort ~2min recovery, +4x10 sec hill sprints ~full jog rec (amended Magness session)

    3.27 (5.33p/m)
    3.27 (5.33p/m)
    3.27 (5.33p/m)
    3.24 (5.28p/m)
    3.23 (5.27p/m)
    3.19 (5.20p/m)

I set out deciding to forgo the watch and solely run by effort. Well I say forgo but I did record each rep but refrained from sneaking a glance. Conditions in Kilbogget were quite favourable, with only a light breeze to contend with (for once). No excuses. The body felt good and ready to go. The splits make for interesting reading. The slowest indicate a 10km time of 34:30 and the fastest 33:10. I think I belong somewhere in the middle. The session was far from a killer and in fact, the 10 second hill reps proved a right bruiser. On paper it look easy but trust me they are not. They enjoyable though, even if you do look like a right idiot to the passersby!

An honest session on a tough track. I probably went too easy on myself in the 1st half but happy to see the times naturally come down. Time increase the rep count and/or reduce the recovery.

Drinking many double G&T's and having full access to a free bar the previous night left me in a bit of a delicate state today. I have only myself to blame! The last alcoholic drinks for a while though. I am usually bulletproof when it comes to hangovers but unusually for me I had not a drop of water all night. Schoolboy error!

    20 Min Tempo: 5.7xkm @5.37p/m (track measurements)

The body was still not right from Wednesday. A day of dehydration to blame. The plan was to run a solid tempo effort on the cinder and only look at the stopwatch to indicate when to stop (!). A bit disappointed with the stats afterwards. The splits did get faster but I really expected the numbers to read high 5.2x/low 5.3x. I went through 5km in approximately 17:28. I could have gone another 10+ minutes so I guess I didn't completely kill myself, although I did hit the correct effort levels for a tempo. Another solo session this morning. I have no doubt that company would have really helped.

    Sunday 4/10

    20+ Miles Easy
    -inc. Athlone 3/4 Marathon 2.20:45 (7.11p/m average)

We had a great group to keep us company today. The plan was to run an even effort but bank a fair chunk of time for the challenging finish. I finished about 45 seconds ahead of the time I set out to run but if I ran any slower it wouldn't have helped anyone. In fact I had to tell the group to run easy towards the end as today was all about Dublin and the other autumn marathons. Most followed my advice but some pushed on a bit, which is hard not to do when in a 'race'. My fellow pacer finished ahead while I hung back to the tail end of the sizeable group. A really good morning and nice to meet a lot of people. Unfortunately I had work soon after so could not hang around.

Bags unpacked, passport gone AWOL but my runners are by the door :). So, there goes the most ad hoc training blocks ever undertaken. I have learned a lot but times are a changin'! I am very much looking forward to starting up with the new club next week and get some structure back. I have no idea what to expect come Sunday but I am not too concerned. I know I am not in great shape for a half marathon but the aim is to enjoy it (especially the beers after!). That's not me being defeatist, merely realistic. I may run without the watch and whatever the clock says at the end I will regroup and refocus. The choice will be whether to simply take a step back from the sport or push on, picking a coach and dedicating a large chunk of my life to running the sort of times I want. Anywhoo, that will all come on Monday.

No pressure. Just me, 9000+ Dutch and hopefully a very very flat road :D.

Best of luck at the weekend.

Don't talk yourself out of a good result. You haven't been below 65 miles since May and have been tipping away with sessions also. Go out and give it your best, no excuses.

Regarding training going forward. The work is being put in, just needs to fine tune things and that is where the coach comes in. Don't go into it resistant to change and you will see huge improvements in results.

Hard to believe that I have been logging here for over two years. How time flies.

So, what has been going on? Well, I missed the Eindhoven Half due to feeling unwell. I could have participated but I really didn't see the point. I just was not at the races.

I have enjoyed the past few weeks of ticking over, typically 65/70+ mile weeks. Yesterday saw my first race in quite some time. While the time of 35.53 over the 10k distance was pedestrian at best, it marked the beginning of what hopefully will be a very fruitful period. I didn't over think the race and left the watch turned off. I was stuck in third gear for the whole race, unable to push on and work through the gears. A real lack of race sharpness to blame.

I forgot how much I love racing. Nothing beats it. Luckily I just about made it back to see the mens XC race in Santry. What a spectacle.

120+ seconds. Doesn't sound that much, does it? Well have no choice if want to run 33.xx in the near future. Time will tell I guess! I will do up a brief catch-up over the week and plans for the future.

Good luck with the next block. For someone with a) your talent and b) your commitment in training, you deserve some big performances. 33 mins is very achievable.

    Ah thanks.

Yeah, like to think I have a lot of the pieces of the old jigsaw but they are presently all over the shop! Time to make them fit :pac:......Ok, that's enough of the analogies!

Hope training is going well. Hopefully see you at a race soon.

I am chronically aware that the detail above is probably unnecessary and reader unfriendly. I am though sticking blindly to the title and sentiment of my log, 'Making every mile count'. So that is me almost up-to-date. There's over a month left to run some good times and that is the very plan. No excuses, no place to hide. Let's see what happens!

    Why the short time frame?

    What's up next?

    Why the short time frame?

    What's up next?

    Good question.

I am not really thinking short-term but purely for a) a confidence builder b) starting point for possible marathon training and c) I know I have at least one good time in me in 2015! I have a window now to 'see where I am'.

I am very tempted to do a spring marathon so training for that will start next month. That is still unconfirmed though. The idea is to nail down a plan tonight hopefully.
