Ok, it's an imperfect allegory. But not having a nap is probably a good idea. :P

    I snooze I lose :p?

How is the body this morning ? I felt like I'd been hit by a bus yesterday afternoon. Couldn't move from the couch. Grand now after a few Zz's but I'd forgotten how much racing takes it out of you.

Well done. Great race and report. I'm not sure if it was your cheer-leading squad but I got a good shout out at 500 to go too.

BG the break suited you. You were so strong and happy when we saw you. A great result. Well done.

Didn't realise you were racing too. Hope you had a good one!

And yes, I suspect that was the D3 cheerleading squad at 500m to go :D

Felt grand yesterday and this morning, until I felt something give in the lower back while loading the car to drive the student back to college. Hopefully the return trip to Sligo won't aggravate it.
Might have to can the planned recovery run later.

Well done BG. Nice running. I hope your base building plan works as well for me as it did for you!;)

Ouch, hope nothing serious. Have a book that I found really helpful for back pain cure and prevention 'treat Your own back' by McKenzie. Can lend it if you'd like a read ?

Cheers - sure. Hopefully no treatment req'd but always interested in reading back-related stuff.

    Sunday – LSR

After being an absent, then incapable, parent yesterday I had some making up to do so it was St.Anne’s this morning for the playground and a picnic followed by a trip to Fitzone. Just meant I was late getting out for a run, but probably no harm to have a few extra hours recovery. Took this very easy and didn’t pay much attention to the watch other than to make sure I didn’t do a step over ten miles. Up to St. Anne’s, a loop inside the perimeter then back by the promendade to make sure I did as much of the route on grass/trail as possible.
    • 10 miles @ 9:06 (grass, trail, path)

    TOTAL WEEKLY MILES: 40.1

Next week will be reduced mileage again (35) and I’ll postpone any sort of session until Friday I think to give adequate recovery after yesterday’s race.

    Monday - Easy

Still haven't planned out this week properly so I hadn't really finalised the distance for this evening's run even as I headed out. In the end I let storytime dictate the distance so I capped it at 4 miles and was back in time for Charlie & Lola, followed by Little Red Riding Hood (the modern version :
the big bad wolf is defeated by a bunch of flowers, acorns and a jar of honey; and Granny is alive and well after being merely locked in the wardrobe
    )
    • 4 miles @ 8:50 incl 6 x 20 sec strides

Look like it's too late to edit my report, but having consulted the video evidence for The Lakes 10K I'm revising my PB to 44:04. That sub 44 will be all the sweeter if when it happens :D

I think you're very patient. So bloody close. A chip time would surely have been 43:57?? Sorry, I know this is not helpful.... :o
How were the legs on the 10 miler?

I think the 43:57 would only have happened if I'd ran bang on 10K which is very unlikely. The finish video puts me 16 seconds ahead of Murph_D. May as well get these things right :)

Legs weren't too bad at all, a little tight but not sore or niggly. Have an osteo visit and a sports massage booked before the half so hopefully will be good to go for Saturday week!

How about you ? All recovered from Saturday ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,272 ✭✭✭Dubgal72

Yeah, I know, you'll feel better doing it with an actual chip time over guesstimation. I'd do it myself...

No, legs are still fecked! Heel a bit tender as well but just feels bruised. I've an 11 or 12 miler in the am  will stick to grass. Won't have much of a taper before Charleville but I suppose it's not a goal race......that sounded suspiciously like sandbagging didn't it :o :D Feck it, I've a cold brewing too :pac:

It's the same weekend as Dublin Half ? Ages and ages to go, you'll be grand! Hope the heel calms down, but yeah grass sounds like the way to go.

How is the rest of your race calender looking for the year?

That could be considered a contentious question around these parts :D

I'm going to put a final list together soon but it'll be shorter stuff mainly: cross country and then Jingle Bells 5k as the goal race.

    Tuesday – Double

Planning on 2 rest days this week, so stuck with the Tuesday double which suits me time wise and it’s a simple way to get some decent miles in. Morning run was enjoyable, evening run after work was along my least favourite route with the long drag up towards DCU from Griffith Park. I figure it’s good for me but always find it a struggle.
    • 4.5 miles @ 8:43 incl 6 x 20 sec strides (grass)
    • 4.0 miles @ 9:03 (path)

    Wednesday – S&C, Medium Run

Great Pilates class, and then a run up the promenade and out to the end of the Bull Wall and back. Loads of runners out this evening, perfect night for it. Was a bit alarmed to see how dark it was on the way back . First time in months I’ve been running in the dark. Must dig out the hi-viz accessories!
    • 7.0 miles @ 9:01 (grass, path)

Rest day now and another one on Saturday (after Osteo on Friday). The body is still not quite recovered from Saturday’s exertions so I won’t do anything too taxing on Friday morning (maybe a fartlek?), then about 10 miles on Sunday to bring me to 35 miles for the week. Gotta get to the start line in good nick on Saturday week for Smackdown part deux ;)

Good on ya BG! You're absolutely flying it! Lovely to see the hard work paying dividends from base work and seem like you've really enjoyed the training for the longer stuff a lot more than you initially envisaged. Oh and well done on the super weekend pb!

I might ask you for some garmin links to some of your Howth runs soon as I really want to start exploring that area for my long runs and doing more hilly runs in the coming months.

ps: We'll have the table link ready and waiting for you for after the half :)
    Best of luck!

Great to hear from you Ososlo! Yes of course, I'll PM you a couple of links. It's a lovely area to run in, nice and quiet if you can avoid the weekends but still never far from civilisation.

I did really enjoy the base building much to my surprise. I could really feel the difference on Saturday during the race. Strong as opposed to dying a slow and painful death :D

Thanks for the good wishes for the half, if I can cling on to the pacers for the duration I'll be very happy.

    Friday – S&C, Fartlek

Pilates class, then a fartlek session up to the end of the Bull Wall and back. I didn’t have anything specific on the plan for today and didn’t feel like doing a formal session so went for a fartlek. Messed up the first one by pressing the stop instead of the lap button but happy with these paces.
    • 5.6 miles @ 8:15 incl. 30 – 90 secs fartlek with equal recoveries (grass, path)

    Time: 30 / 45 / 60 / 75 / 90 / 75 / 60 / 45 / 30
    Pace: 7:16/6:35/6:46/6:44/6:35/6:39/6:32/6:17/6:03

Trip to the osteopath then to have my bones put back to their rightful places. Another rest day tomorrow, I don’t know what to do with myself :D

    Sunday – LSR

Poor BG Jr. caught the vom bug that was doing the rounds of her class so
Friday night and Saturday morning are a bit of a blur, and the scheduled rest day yesterday was well timed, and possibly the first day in years I didn’t get out of my PJs or set foot outside the door .

Set out mid morning for the final recce of the half route, this time taking in the last 8 miles or so from the Castleknock end of the park via Whites Road, Tower Gate, Mount Sackville, Ordnance Survey, Chesterfield, Conyngham Road, Upper Glen Road and Furze Road with and extra couple of miles back to the car to make up the ten. The splits seem a bit fast but the effort felt similar to previous recces. I did deliberately work a bit harder up the hill though. Might be the positive effects of the osteopath treatment too, the body always feels like it’s more efficient after a treatment, hope that feeling lasts the week!
    • 10 miles @ 8:08 (path)
    • Splits: 8:26, 8:02, 8:08, 8:05, 7:52, 8:01, 8:05, 8:10, 8:19, 8:12

Felt a bit poorly this afternoon, and was convinced I was getting the bug too but it seems to have passed by, fingers crossed. All things considered not bad timing for a taper. 6 more sleeps :D

    TOTAL WEEKLY MILES: 35.1

    Monday - Easy

Feeling bleurgh all day and finally succumbed to the bug BG Jr had at the weekend. I knew it was just a 24 hour thing so even though I hadn’t eaten all day and didn’t feel like moving I really needed some fresh air so just did a slow jog by the sea.
    • 3 miles @ 9:26 (grass)

    Tuesday - Easy

What a difference a day makes. Full of beans again after a decent sleep. Eating all around me today to make up for yesterday’s loss of appetite. Ran the long drag up from Griffith Park to Collins Avenue then downhill all the way home. Forgot to do my strides .

Wednesday – S&C, Race Pace practice

Had been feeling a bit tight and sore in my hip, glute and lower back all day, not so much when moving but after sitting for a while, or driving. Wasn’t sure at this point if it was muscular or mechanical so continued with the plan to do Pilates followed by the same HM prep session Chickey2, Murph_D and aquinn did recently. Pilates was mostly fine but a couple of moves were irritating my back so I sat them out.

Figured I’d start a jog anyway and see how everything felt before committing to the race pace section. Easy couple of miles up to the Wooden Bridge then strides up as far as the end of the pier. Felt fine, I’ve had this issue before and it’s better with movement, and I kind of knew at this stage it was going to need a trip to the osteo rather than the physio. Started the HM pace section (target 7:35-7:37 min pace) on the bridge then continued back towards Fairview along the promenade. It was pitch black at this stage and it was a little nerve-wracking avoiding dogs, invisible dog leads, bikes etc. At one point a woman who I was running wide around to avoid, opened her arms as if to block me and started moving the same direction, forcing me way off course and frightening the bejeebus out of me, as we could easily have collided . No idea what she was up to, perhaps trying to reclaim the path for walkers or maybe she was trying to be helpful but it left me a bit rattled. Nearly tripped over a pair of loose dogs as well, those miniature ones that look like they belong in a handbag . First mile beeped at 7:20. Too fast, I hadn’t been paying attention due to the aforementioned distractions. Made a conscious effort to slow down on the second mile but at the same time didn’t want to go slower than HM pace and was finding it hard to judge. 7:31, still too fast but it’s done now and maybe race day will feel easier as a result? Just as well I don’t have to pace myself on Saturday as I’d clearly be making a dog’s dinner of it. Another couple of miles to cool down.
    • 7 miles @ 8:41 incl. 4 x 25 second strides and 2 miles @ HM pace (7:20, 7:31) (path, grass)

    Thursday – Rest

Sure enough this morning I’m clearly out of alignment (hips going one way and torso going the other) and luckily was able to get an appointment with the osteopath tomorrow. With luck he’ll pop the offending bones back in place so I can give the Half my best shot.

Ha! Did you miss my concession speech earlier in the week ;) ? I realised trying to keep up with a sub 3:30 marathon runner would not be wise or pretty :D. So unless D goes for a nap half way around, this will be a comprehensive victory for the elders. Youth still ahead on aggregate ;)
