No results to be had anywhere, so I've no idea where I placed. Very happy with how I ran though. The Cru women got team* and individual Gold so a great day for the club. Aquinn had a super run in her first ever XC, I think she'll be hooked once she gets over the shock ;). Report later.

*no thanks to me I hasten to add :o

Well done. It looked like a tough one. Great result. A did have a bit of the Bishop Brennan look about her afterwards alright but I'm sure she'll recover!

You looked like you got more comfortable as the race went on G, strong finish! But boy, that looked like a tough race. Well done.

Sunday - Dublin Novices XC 2.5m (4Km) Phoenix Park

Woke up this morning after a lie-on, with a vague recollection of having had a nightmare dream about the Novices. Uh oh . Can’t remember the details but it involved being late for the race and wearing the wrong shoes .

Sun seemed to be splitting the stones outside which is what I was afraid of but it was actually a bit cooler than it looked. Picked up aquinn and got to the park in plenty of time. Turns out it was more than a bit windy and would be against us on the exposed part of the course. There was a bit of confusion about the distance we’d be running but it was confirmed as one short and two long laps just before the off, for a total of 4Km. The last time I did this race (a million years ago, I was last or very close to it :o) it was 3K and involved a slightly different lap. There was a big enough crowd in the women’s race and we had 10 on our team. I’d gone with the trail shoes in the end and I think it was the right choice as the ground was bone dry and the trail section through the trees was rock hard with exposed roots.

The gun went off unexpectedly and it was a bit of a stampede to the first corner. I’d started near enough to the back of the field (I know my limits!) and settled in to a hard but manageable pace with a loose plan of running steady for the first half then picking up places as the race went on. That’s pretty much how it panned out, I picked up a few places on the first long lap then more during the second lap. Lungs were ok, but the body just didn’t want to move any faster. I caught up with a couple of clubmates with about 300m to go, and working together we managed to pick up another place or two, ‘Every place counts!’ ringing in our ears from our club captain who did an awesome motivational job today. Crossed the line knowing I couldn’t have done any better on the day, but also knowing I can do better in the future. More gym work and more speed work needed to take advantage of this new found endurance.

Our team did amazingly: individual and team gold, and strong performances all round, especially from those doing their first XC, aquinn included. No doubt she’ll tell y’all about it herself later once the shell shock has worn off :).

There was amazing support on the course, not least from Annapr, Murph_D and Firedance. No idea where I placed today, but that’s largely irrelevant, and it was definitely a better performance than my Novices debut. I ran the best I could and was happy with my pacing. I prefer a muckier course, today’s surface didn’t suit me, but can’t be expecting mudfests in October really. The lack of speed, especially any sort of finishing kick is something I need to work on but my endurance has definitely improved from the base building. Next race will be my ‘Cross Damn Fun’ outing in Berlin :D.

Thanks a million, glad to have the first XC of the season in the bag and out of the way. It was without a doubt the toughest race I've done in a long time, but the support was amazing, it seemed like there was someone shouting at every corner which made it easier to HTFU :D

Monday – Easy + Hill Sprints

Laps of Fairview Park with hill sprints on Fairview Mountain. Can’t remember anything else about this run
    • 5.1 miles @ 8:56 + 5 x 8 sec hill sprints (grass)

    Tuesday – Easy incl. strides

Made up a route on the hoof from Griffith Park to home via Mobhi Road, ‘Albo’, Collins Ave, Malahide Road, Griffith Ave. Passed a runner on Collins Ave who said ‘show-off’ (good-naturedly!) as I ran by. I guessed correctly that he was in marathon training and wished him luck. Thought about telling him Annapr’s idea for wearing a ‘Recovery’ sign on one’s back, but thought better of it :pac::pac:
    • 6 miles @ 8:46 incl. 6 x 20 sec strides (path)

    Wednesday – S&C, Medium Run with 8 x 25 secs intervals @ 1500 - 3K pace

Great Pilates class with the added excitement of one of the pre-natal class in the adjoining studio leaving half way through because her baby was on the way. She was the calmest person in the building.

Did my run up and down the promenade as I don’t like doing the speedier stuff on concrete. Guessed the pace and the time as it’s hard to see the watch and no point wasting half of the interval time messing with the backlight. So I just counted my cadence and it worked out pretty well. Splits look a bit more even than last week so hopefully that means I’m more in tune with the required pace.
    • 8 miles @ 8:58 incl. 8 x 25 secs @ 1500m-3K pace (grass)
      Paces (6:02, 6:01, 6:01, 6:16, xx:xx*, 5:53, 6:09, 6:04)

*that would be where a dog off the lead decided to play chase me and I hit the stop button instead of the lap button. I expect that rep was the one where I broke the landspeed record and now I have no proof

    Thursday – REST

Really wanted to run because it was such a lovely evening but sense prevailed. Also I am all out of get-out-of-the-house passes

Friday – S&C, Medium Run + Hill Sprints

Level 1 Pilates class. Great to go back to basics and focus on technique rather than worrying about the choreography (my two left feet extend to the rest of me :o).

Drove to Howth to do the Fat Turkey route which is up to the summit car park from Santa Sabina/St.Fintan’s Church then back down the same way. Kept the effort easy, as least as easy as it can be on hills. Happy with the splits. Then ran up towards the Martello Tower to find a decent hill for the sprints and did 6 with full recovery up Shielmartin Road. Got some odd looks :D.
    • 7 miles @ 8:36 incl. 10K Fat Turkey route + 6 x 8 sec hill sprints

    10K splits: 5:23, 6:03, 5:05, 5:29, 5:46, 4:59, 4:47, 5:04, 4:56, 4:56

Just catching up here! You are a show off :). Some splits going up Howth!!! I would have loved to see you tear away from that dog :)

Haha, that guy was very keen to tell me he'd done his 20 miles on Saturday. You might be on to a marketable idea there with your recovery signs

That dog wasn't catching me, scores levelled.

    Saturday – S&C, Easy Run

Decided it was about time I got my lazy self back in to the gym as I apparently gave myself the summer off without really meaning to. Just eased back with 1 set of everything and the puniest of puny weights. Took 15 minutes . Really no excuse for not getting back into the habit, and I’m convinced the recent niggles are down to the absence of any gym work.

Ran from the gym up to the Wooden Bridge on the grass and back home including some strides on the return leg. Much cooler than recent weeks and a nice gentle breeze. Thought this was going to be a plod given that I’d had a massive lunch and was still feeling full but actually felt okay in the end. Getting dark so early now :(.
    • 5 miles @ 8:43 incl. 6 x 20 sec strides

Sunday – LSR with last 15 mins moderate

Headed to the Phoenix Park late morning for this. It was like there was a runners’ convention on there were so many people out running. Lovely weather for it. I stuck to the trails for the first hour or so and discovered some new ones (and a mahoosive hill near the Furry Glen) then hit the tarmac from Castleknock Gate down to the zoo for the moderately paced 15 minutes, taking advantage of the downhill. Probably a bit fast, I was aiming for half marathon pace, but that’s exactly where the pacers bagged some time on the day of the race so I reckon the effort was about right. Happy with this, especially as I had to miss last week’s LSR due to the Novices XC so I thought the 15 mins might be a bit of a struggle.

Can't make the Open, won't even be around to cheer at it unfortunately. I have seriously scaled back , I don't even know when my next XC race is apart from the 'event' in Berlin. My November race calendar is blank! Can't decide if I've suddenly got sense or had a bang on the head :o.

    Yup, it is!

Only thing that'll potentially get in the way of this is if one of the Meet & Train XC is scheduled for the date. Hopefully not as it sounds like fun :D
