How are your damsons this year ?

I had a very modest crop.

Stretched with some apple, they were converted into a few pots of jam. Turned out better than I expected.

Lasagne is on the menu tomorrow. Made up the mix tonight, will put it all together tomorrow. A pepper, onions, carrots, leeks, crushed garlic, sweet corn, pea's, mince and lardons. Kids won't eat veg on their own, but they'll eat it in a dish. The pot is full, holy moley. Just to make the cheese sauce and assemble. Happy days. Smoked paprika and a can of chopped tomatoes in it too.

Dizzy, roosters are not a new season potato - they're a main crop variety.

I know, but I was talking about the first Roosters of the current season as opposed to those that have been stored since the precious season. If they're floury, then the Queens should be too since they're a floury potato. If you get my drift... :)

Stripedboxers - I find it better to steam the floury potatoes before mashing, that way they don't fall apart in the water.

    Another little tip on Queens...

Only ever buy unwashed Queens & preferably in a paper or breathable bag. If there's no dirt on them - forget it. It means they've been washed which causes them to start deteriorating almost immediately.

Damn it. Too watery. Didn't sweat the veg off enough. And there's 5 days worth of dinners left.

Ate what I thought was green pesto as part of lunch, only to realise it was curry paste...

Made falafel. For the first time ever the flavour was exactly what I want in a falafel. Then the little feckers broke up on the pan.

    I ate them anyway.

Falafel crumbs are great in a salad, sure you mightn't have eaten them whole anyway! :)

That's it! Packed into a pitta with hummus, feta, tomato, red onion, olives and baby spinach. It was so tasty!

I would like to manage it with whole falafels though :)

I made that pastitsio for dinner this evening. I might never make (or eat) anything else ever again...

Is it not just lasagne with a pinch of mint?

I don't have damsons per se, but a tree with mirabelles (the yellow plums, is that what they're called in English? I only know the German/French term for them) and another with sort of pink-ish plums (I never found out what exactly these are), and I've had a good crop out of both of them this year.

Not as absurdly massive as last year, but enough for over a dozen jars of jam, and lots and lots of plum liqueur :D

Recently done the cookery class in Saba Thai restaurant.

Have to say it was brilliant ate a mountain of delicious food and got some really good tips and advice along with there fantastic cook book. The best thing we took from the class was what ingredients to buy from the Asian markets instead of buying from tesco things such as fish sauce, coconut milk, curry paste and soy sauce it's made a huge difference in taste so much better :).

Has anyone got Jamie Oliver new cookbook? His documentary sugar rush and is certainly worth a watch I thought it was brilliant and good on him trying to use his influence in a positive way.

It's strange how a recipe can jump out at you. I scan through the Guardian food section every week & there's always lots of lovely recipes in there, but when I saw that I thought "Jaysus! I'm having some of that!" And this coming from someone who isn't fond of lasagne.

It's really not; certainly not this version.

I had a full on Yes-it-is-No-it-isn't back and forth with a waiter once over the fact that the harissa that was supposed to come with my grilled halloumi was actually red pesto. Like, come on, dude, give me some credit.

Not much of a waiter! They aren't remotely similar!

There's a great little shop up the top of the town that sells all that gear. Across from the boys primary school.

I am VERY excited. I just ordered a delivery from Dublin Doughnut Company for my office on Thursday. Malt chocolate, salt caramel & white chocolate/orange doughnuts here we come!! Have been craving these for months, based on photographs only, but the only places that stock them are too far away from work to hoof it to at lunch.

I think I can speak for us all here when I say where do you work and get the hell out of my way I'm taking your doughnuts.

I won't name my workplace but on Friday at around 11.30 you should be able to find us if you stand in Dublin 2 and navigate your way to our office by listening out for the sound of many little pigs freaking out. That'll be us. I'll keep you one of each flavour aside.

I missed the lime ones last week, so sad.

I literally just discovered them a few hours ago and have decided I'm ordering from them and will have a stack of them instead of a cake for my husbands birthday!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,057 ✭✭✭MissFlitworth

Was totally thinking of something similar for my little sister's birthday angeldelight (great minds!) but she's agening on a Sunday and I don't think they'd be as delicious a day old. Excellent birthday cake choice.

I've never heard of this company but am now getting them next week in work for my birthday :)

Somewhere near my work is a place that makes donuts. I don't know where, but I can smell them frying. It's a terrible thing to have to come into work to in the mornings.

Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays :) Which still makes it tough to buy doughnuts and the only places I know of that sell them individually are northside city centre (Vice & 147 Deli).

It's like the in the local Supervalu. Day and night the car park smells like doughnuts. They probably pipe it out on purpose to make people buy more.
