With the Cratloe lads concentrating on intercounty football this year I'd back them for the football again this year. I'm going for Newmarket in the hurling

hard to argue with that they are the best team no doubt in the football but i am not sure how long more they can keep going , big call going against clonlara they have been fairly solid up to now , colin ryan is running the show almost on his own for newmarket up front

Unless Newmarket are timing their run perfectly, they don't appear to be hurling great.
First 2 championship games they scored
    1 13
    and then 0 13 I think.
That's very poor from a side of their capabilities. 1 17 the last day was a big improvement and from now on, a score like that should get you through.

On the football, I went in to the Park to see Ennistymon v KIB in what was an enjoyable game.
Ennistymon led 07 04 at ht with both sides having one very good goal chance each.
After about 10 mins of the 2nd half it was 08 05 and then KIB started to get motoring to pull it level at 08 08.

At that stage it was hard to look beyond KIB with Ennistymon struggling around the middle. They put together a lovely passing move where even a point was badly needed but the centre completely opened up and Ralph had to go for it.

Even chasing it down late on KIB hit the post looking for a goal. High drama near the end.

For me one main difference was free taking. I wasn't keeping check but I think Ennistymon only missed 2 (only 1 was a poor effort) through Danny Rouine whilst in the 2nd half alone KIB missed about 4 through Keelan Sexton (who got an outstanding pt from play in 2nd half) and I think Enda Coughlan missed a few as well. Not enough elevation on more than one occasion.

The post was also Ennistymons friend. I counted 2 efforts from them off timber to 5 or 6 from KIB.

More great professionalism with no scoreboard operational till almost 15 mins in.

Last point. It was my 1st football championship game this summer so I'm not sure if was an isolated incident or are club refs having as much difficulty as their intercounty brethren.
I counted about 4 obvious black card offences with either yellow or no card of any description.

The consensus seems to be that Clonlara are going to win this very easily.

the draw was made a little earlier for the 1/4 finals and semi finals repeats for miltown/ennistimon and kilrush and breckans , possibility of a cratloe/cooraclare rematch in the semi finals but clondegads fire power up front is catching alot of peoples eye's of late they will go very close to putting the holders to the sword

    Cratloe v Clondegad
    Cooraclare v O'Currys
    Kilrush v St Breckans
    Ennistymon v Miltown

    Semi Finals
    Cratloe/Clondegad v Cooraclare/O'Currys
    Kilrush/St Breckans v Ennistymon/Miltown

in relation to the ennistymon kilmurry game on sunday , pat fitz our friend here on boards had to step in to take over the scoreboard duties i soppose it could be classed as some sort of secretarial work of some sort. . . . . id hate to see the bill at the next county board meeting for it

the black card is too vague full stop as a rule and a massive hindrance on referees i feel for reffs at local level trying to deal with it

kilmurry are on the slide slightly they will tell you that themselves back there but by that report it would seem they were very unlucky by the sound of things

It has been established for a long time that if Mr. Fitzgerald is at a GAA match in county Clare that he is on official business and is entitled to pay for a refund of the tickets of anyone in his company and also expenses for getting too and from the match, this was established a long time ago. When he was asked to give his opinion on a incident in a match before he refused to stating that he was just a spectator and that was challenged cause of an expenses claim, some loop hole was found.

I saw in the Clare people that the media were banned from the County SHC Q final draws...related back to the stretcher controversy. Christ they are pathetic.

Don't forget small minded, and petty, oh yeah and corrupt.

Don't forget as well that there was a lot of people with vested interest in the draw to try to make them as "fair" as possible.

Also don't forget that there might be someone looking to run for the Dail soon that that are looking to raise their profile back west by bringing the football final to Miltown, you can't be discussing things like that with the media present, I'm sure their PR consultants have advised them of that fact.

If bringing a football match to West Clare gets him elected it's a sad reflection on the population of west clare!

It's more to do with the whole bringing all the people to Miltown, don't underestimate what people (especially Clare people) will vote for.

    Hold on, What???
The draws are being held in private without any external oversight?

    How is that acceptable?

Nope, that's not true. The media were banned. I don't know if the clubs were.

The County Board representatives of each club were allowed attend the draw, just not allowed report anything to the media.

Quarter final weekend in the club hurling championship.

    Today
    2. Crusheen v Clooney

Would expect crusheens experience to see them through. A tight game is expect with crusheen coming through by a couple of points.

    4. Kilmaley v ballyea

Hard to see ballyea not coming through this one especially with clearly out for kilmaley. Ballyea by 6

    6. Clonlara v Newmarket

Good contest here and the weather is good so will suit clonlara. Think clonlaras forwards have the upper hand and would expect a 4 point win.

    Sunday

    12.30. Cratloe v bridge

Stupid having it on Sunday but was requested due to exams for some players I believe. At least they moved it back from half 1 just in case there is extra time.
Can see it going to extra time too. Should be a very good game. Going to go with the bridge by 2. Look like they have been taking it very serious this year.

Word doing the rounds now is that the bridge cratloe match is back on at 1. Anyone any wiser? ?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,053 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

Would have been a great day out in the park today, first game on at 12 and then every 2 hours after that, could have had a great buzz around today, if I was paranoid I would mention the fact that it suits the Bridge to have an extra day's preparation.

My take on the games would be:
Clooney could launch a surprise here, Crusheen have had a lot of injuries but expierence should get them through. I would say Crusheen by 2

Conor Cleary would be a massive loss to any team, to a team in transition like Kilmaley it's a huge blow, I hear Alan Markham is playing centre back for them. Ballyea by 6

I think Newmarket are going to win the whole lot, I think they are coming right at the right time, Clonlara have great forwards though, this will probably be the game of the round with Newmarket coming through by 2

Can't see Cratloe being beaten in the other 1.

Think cratloe needed it in Sunday due to Conor Ryan having exams.

Extra time in the Kilmaley Ballyea game, 1-13 a piece, it'll be fair dark for the end of the Newmarket Clonlara game.

    Extra-Time Half-Time:
    Kilmaley 1-15 Ballyea 2-14

Kilmaley with a last minute goal to win it, really didn't see that result coming

    Kilmaley 2-18 Ballyea 2-17
