A road tunnel would be cheaper in the long run.

Will cost billions in feasibility studies and consultancy fees alone. The boys in Acc>nture are already rubbing their hands together at the thought

It would only have to be a small cheap tunnel. One bore one-lane with a stop-go system would suffice for the meanwhile. Actually it would probably increase tourism and property prices hugely, heck the Aran Isles could end up like an Irish version of Hong Kong.

Another shocking Fine Gael led move. I'd hazard a guess the owners of Executive helicopters have made donations to them before. The Aran Islands will suffer in the harsh winters. Island life is a unique part of our culture and I am happy for my taxes to subsidize their aeroplane service.

I'm just curious, but I always wanted to move to the Aran Islands, the scenery is amazing when it's not misty or foggy and the night-sky for astronomy is supposed to be great. What sort of work opportunities would there be on these three Islands ? fishing at sea would be good, but what else ?.

Aran Island is a leper colony.

So is Dublin city of course. Rats everywhere. Not a bad ole change for a different life, back to nature. How much is it for a chopper from Galway bay to Inishmor ?

I'd be there quicker if I booked a flight instead of asking you folk.

People don't choose where they're born. Many things in this country are subsidised and since these guys live out on the islands they don't get the benefit of much of the mainland spending. So I'm okay with a little subsidisation for them.
You think Aran Islanders don't get much from the government? Being both an island and a Gaeltacht area?
    Delusional.

I don't want to subsidise culture, which is a personal choice. What's "our"?

I don't see why people living in Galway on the flight path are not complaining, they will have the pain in the hole helicopter noise every morning and evening.

You think this would be the only helicopter over Galway every day?

Mainly collecting government freebies & dodging taxes.

We all CHOOSE to live where we do for goodness sake!
Tell that to all those who had to emigrate or move town because of employment. Do you really think everyone who moves do Dublin does so because they choose to live in Dublin?

If you want to be mercenary, tourism. The Great Blasket died due to a case of an islander with meningitis in who died before a doctor could get to him....
It would have been an interesting challenge to build a runway on the Great Blasket!

I gather that teaching is an important element of the islands' economy - about 35 full-time jobs.

Tourism is also a big activity. Obviously, a lot of the work is seasonal.

People whinging about islanders receiving travel subsidies.....whilst driving on those shiny new motorways we have on the mainland.

In fairness, one of the callers to Loiveline calling to complain about it was an Dub who decided to move there.

I don't see the great difference between a plane and a helicopter in this case - surely if helicopters can service oil rigs in the north sea they can service the aran islands.

Tis a nice idea alright if it could be done but I imagine it will turn out to be a small expensive tunnel many times over budget. As a country we're great at getting a lot of money to change hands over very little work and very few goods.

Most of it will end up in the pockets of Dublin-based desk work companies and foreign companies drafted in. It's probably bad enough as it is with Aer Arann islands. I wonder how much of the subsidies they get is sent straight back to Dublin in the form of compulsory insurances, meeting regulatory requirements, tax and so on?

Last time I checked there were roads on the Aran Islands too... I guess the locals ran a fundraiser, yeah?

Can you expand on this, why do you think that the islands will suffer from having a modern twin turbine engined helicopter service rather than a 30 year twin piston engine aircraft?

If they're stuck on the island cause they don't like the 30 mins extra or whatever, then surely that's better for tourism.. Even more authentic.

I couldn't care less about them anyways.. I went out there on a boat and one of the first things we did was eat a SuperMacs cause we were starving. You might say we should have eaten a more local or ethnic dish but ya know, that doesn't actually exist.

The island below is actual island culture.. The Aran islands are just normal Irish people living on an island.

It's probably a fair point, helicopters are probably as safe, but they can't carry as many passengers and are more likely to stay grounded in conditions that a plane would fly through.

Still though, if you insist on living on a remote island, you can't really be picky about this stuff.
actually yes you can. these people have lived there for generations. its unlikely a community will continue to exist indefinitely there, so we may as well help them in whatever capacity we can until that time comes. which probably will be in my lifetime

    actually yes you can.
So if I decide to be first to reinhabit the Blaskets, I can be picky about what kind of subsidised air transport will be provided for me?
I'll just go check the tent and sleeping bag.

There are a lot more populated islands around the world without a regular air service than ones that have. People just don't like having their perks taken off them. There's nothing stopping the islanders setting up an air service themselves if it's that vital to the very essence of their existence. Well actually there is one thing, they ability to do it with other people's money.
other islands around the world are irrelevant. its our job to help these irish citizens by ensuring they can continue to have a service provided by a suitable aircraft, so that the people get to the mainland and that tourists can come to support the local economy

    Certainly haven't.

What do they contribute that warrents an air service.
what does it matter what they contribute. the air service is vital for an almost reliable transport route to and from the islands. thats enough to warrent it. there is no argument to not provide this vital service.

They seem happy enough with the aul boats when they're many times more dangerous.

Helicopters are marginally safer than light aircraft because you're actually less likely to die in a crash. The light aircraft might glide a bit to land, but that's no use to you when you hit the land at 100km/h.

The fears of the islanders in relation to helicopters are unfounded. The vast majority of helicopter crashes are during military exercises, or small private helis doing something dumb, like that guy who hit the pub recently.

In reality here is the tradeoff; helicopters will be faster door-to-door, but you will be able to carry less passengers (5 instead of 9) and the service will be slightly reduced because it will be grounded more often.
they lose more then they would gain. so they are right to fight against this

You could say that about anybody who had anything taken away they shouldn't have had in the first place. It's meaningless.
