    Reason I was asking!

Headache much better, took some Anadin and lots of water! Phew!

It's no big deal to take a painkiller once in a while. You do get people who routinely take them though which is a bad idea in just about every respect.

Hi SD, as long as you have close to a three week taper, that's fine. What will you do in between the 20 and 22 miler, 18? No harm doing a midweek mlr of up to 12 miles but don't jump into that. What is your current midweek longest run?
    )

Yep, planning to go back down to 18 miles in between those two. Have been doing the occasional 7.5 mile run on a nice loop from time to time, that's about the longest midweek run to date.

4 miles pace run this morning, not sure why let this one get
Into my head. Thanks FBOT for just run advice & Dubgal run
    By feel advice.

So rose at 6am after late to bed & crappy night sleep, few stretches
and hot water bottle to calfs.

Out the door just before 6.30, half mile w/u with out watch, then hit
Start, didn't kill my self so comfortable enough run, about mile & half
    Steady drag through out run.

Last qtr mile getting back into estate usually this is cooldown mode
So had to fight to keep pace, could have been fatigue, but I think it
Is more habit, as wasn't breathing to heavy & was able to chat comfortably
With neighbour who was leaving as I was finishing.

    Avg pace 7.14 time 28.58

    Splits
    7.07
    7.09
    7.11
    7.32

Nice run, G....with a current 5k PB of 22:31 that counts as a good pace run. Given the fact you weren't blowing hard after it I can see a nice bonus coming for you in December when you get back to the shorter stuff. Well done.

Arrgghhh....don't fricking mention man flu.... it nearly killed me last year ......aawwww!! Going to avoid the Luas, Bus, Cinema, snotty nosed kids (even mine), work colleagues and relations with a sniffle and any gathering of people for the two weeks before the DCM.

Going to chomp on Rubex tablets and fresh oranges and Kiwi fruit too to keep the vitamin C levels up, as the LSR's can deplete and weaken your immune system.......stock up now lads.....stock up ;)

4 mile run last night, a bit later than I had hoped - I prefer to catch a little be of light when I start out my run. I was itching to get out and it had felt like more than a day since my last run, a good sign. Run was very comfortable although I had a little tenderness on the outside of my left knee, nothing to hamper a four miler but we'll see tonight on the 8 mile run how it performs. Found myself doodling the figure 8 in a meeting today (8 miles tonight) this training is becoming all consuming.
My colleagues are going to the picnic this weekend and it's dominating the conversation, I just keep thinking of the guys on here that are going and how they're to fit their lsr in - poor souls!!
    Anywhere here's the split from last night;
    1. 10.31
    2. 10.23
    3. 10.39 slight incline
    4. 10.24 (my mind was racing at this point and as I looked down I saw I had upped the pace considerably and ending up gearing down and doing a decent warm down)

    safe running y'all

I was chatting with a fellow runner at work this morning about changing my routine and starting my evening run straight from work.

He thinks that because I'm losing out on my 1 mile walk home, I should now stretch before my run i.e running after sitting at my desk all day isn't as good as running after having walked home. Sure I move around at work, walk up and down stairs etc but it's not the same. (Normally I'd walk home (1m), get into my gear then go straight back out for my warm up mile and then run).

He says he injured himself this way previously, running after sitting at work all day.

I know there's a difference of opinion on whether or not it's good to stretch on cold muscles. What do you guys think? I would have a 1 mile warm up walk during my run anyway (normally in addition to my 1 mile walk home).

tl;dr changing running routine tonight, losing a 1 mile walk; to stretch or not to stretch??
@TFGR Glad you brought up this topic
I normally cycle to work, it's an easy 6 km in and a tougher 6km home. The cycle in I find really sets me up for the day (I also have an office job) but the cycle home makes it impossible to turn around and go back out for a run, which means delaying my run to late at night, which is ok for 4m but not so much for 8m+. I have made the recent decision to keep most of my energy for running and maybe cycle on a rest day like Monday.
Notwithstanding this I still find it unnatural (can't think of a better word) to go from office to running, that 1m walk you had sounds ideal to me. Maybe it's another adaption we have to make.

Ah don't feel too bad for us!

I'm carb-loading for tomorrow's LSR in between testing my blow up mattress with my new battery operated pump, bopping around to Le Galaxie and staring longingly at my bag of alcohol. Two more sleeps and 20 miles my pretties, then you shall be mine :D

Thanks everyone for the advice on the headache this morning. I don't want to do anything that will jeapordize/waste all my training this year so wanted to be extra sure!

Thanks also for the advice the change in my routine and whether I should stretch or not. It's not part of my normal routine so I took your advice and didn't stretch. Firedance, I did what you suggested and in the half hour before I left work I was up and down from my desk, walking around as much of the office as I could and up and down the stairs. After that, I got ready for my run, left the office and walked to my starting point then walk/jogged a warm up mile, ran 4 tempo miles, ran half a mile at my easy pace then walked a half mile for cool down. All I had on me was my armpocket with my phone, keys, leap card and some money.

    Splits looked like this:

    Mile 1: 15:28 (warm up)
    Mile 2: 13:38
    Mile 3: 13:21
    Mile 4: 13:19
    Mile 5: 13:19
Mile 6: 15:36 (1/2 at recovery pace, 1/2 at walking pace)

It turned out to be one my best tempo runs in terms of speed, and also my confidence and capability. I felt really good at this pace and didn't feel like collapsing or particularly exhausted afterwards. This is at the fast end of my 'hard pace' range so I'm really delighted with these splits!

I'm also chuffed to get home at a decent time and feel like I still have an evening left. Why I didn't decide to do this sooner, I'll never know!

After I got home I was craving something cold and sweet so I went to Lidl and got a watermelon. It's chilling in the fridge, can't wait to dive in! (After my recovery dinner of toast, avocado and eggs of course!)

Anyway, sorry for the long post, just thought you might be interested in how it went!

Plan had 6 miles tonight 4 of them time trial..... hadn't a clue what that meant so had to check with the hubby. As he posted "run like fock" for the 4 miles. Was not looking forward to this as I am not a lover of fast runs and it was starting to rain and it was a little cold and it was Wednesday ..... Yeah just wasn't feeling it !!! But like always once you get out the door its grand. Decided to warm up and ran my first mile to the cycle track figure it would be nice a flat for the 4 miles and off a went. Probably went out a bit fast as I found the 2nd and 3rd mile tough. Tried to run a bit fast for the 4th mile but the long run on Sunday had taken its toll on the calves. Splits are below :

    Mile 1 11.38
    Mile 2 9.05
    Mile 3 9.32
    Mile 4 9.34
    Mile 4 9.27
    Mile 6 11.55

Legs very tight after so did some stretches and foam rolled.

Thanks for the tooth ache sympathy! I'm actually shocked at how painful it is. Had no idea people went through this I've been lucky to date with my teeth it seems! Had the first installment of the root canal today eek. Not even the painkillers are dulling the pain completely. Ouch! Must let this settle now and have the next session in two weeks and will possibly need one more. I'm going on holidays at the end of the month for 10 days (and yep my running gear of course is on my packing list!) so my dentist is trying to have all of this well sorted by then.

Anyway, sorry for going on but determined not to let this ruin my plan. I appreciate the advice to take it easy (and I had no choice but to cancel my weights and TRX session tonight) but I'm going to attempt my LSR tomorrow if I feel ok. Will probably take some painkillers and head off.

Popped some panadol last night and managed a 6.5 mile. Ran each mile at approx 8.40/9 per mile. Is this too fast? (sorry for asking stupid questions so late on). Oh and I recently switched over from kms to miles. I find it mentally easier. Anyone else find this? It was much easier on the brain last week watching myself hit 15miles rather than waiting for my watch to hit 26kms. Weird I know but... I'm weird!!!

Alot of the reason I was so motivated to run last night, despite the tooth pain was because .... my flipbelt arrived yesterday! Holy Hell, did I make a mistake by not listening to you guys sooner. Best, running gadget.... EVER. Seriously I felt so free. I always bring my phone with me for safety reasons, plus I need to bring keys, tissues (and on LSRs my gels) and this thing held everything really securely and the only thing I FELT I was carrying was my water. Anyone on the fence about this you need to buy it. I have a discount code if anyone is interested and it worked out at like 20euro including postage directly from flipbelt. I think if you order this week it would arrive before the HM, mine took about a week.

(I don't normally take painkillers, this is just an exception!).

    Good week so far!!

Monday: Rest (didn't bother with the recovery run)
    Tues: 7M steady in 62.50

Tonight: I did the 4M local race. Legs felt good despite the 7M run last night.
Signed up this afternoon and jogged from home down to the start as my warm up. Did feel a little nervous about pacing as had no clue what to go for and had Ying and Yang (DG and Clearlier) ringing in my ears. Good turnout of over 300 and we were off pretty quickly. Start was fast (looked at my watch and we were at 6.00 pace - oh Sh1t!!!). Settled down and realised I was running beside a guy I was talking to before the start who said he was looking at 7.00 miles so I checked with him what pace his watch was saying. He said his watch was saying 6.45 pace... And I had a massive wobbler. Not that I was going slower than I thought in the race - but that perhaps my watch was not working properly at all and that all my training times/ distances were much worse than I thought!!! Had to put this out of my head and just focus on the race. Finished first mile (per watch as there was no mile marker) in 6.45 and felt pretty good. Tried to push on a little but had a couple of drags so even though I was trying harder my pace actually dropped a little. I was passing people though and especially on the hills. Mile 2 completed in 7.02, which wasn't too bad considering the drag. Still feeling really good, stride and form was strong and no niggles whatsoever. Mile 3 had a bit down hill and I find that I can really push it going downhill (I actually like hills - am I a bit mad?). Didn't look at mile 3 split as was waving at neighbours kids, but knew it had to be quicker than 7.00 pace. Into the last mile - caught up with two guys who had been ahead of me. As I passed them, one decided to push also and we both refused to concede. It really helped me as there was no way I was giving up the position!! About 800m to go and we had a slight drag for 400m. I pushed on again and eventually he faded. In front of me (about 10m) was a fit looking guy who looked to be well into his 50's. I knew the family were at the finish line so the child in me came out and I said I had to get in front of this guy!! The last 300M was a slight downhill. I gave it a burst to catch up with him... But as soon as he heard my flat footsteps / laboured breathing / wheezing etc he took off like Usain Bolt! I gave chase but not a chance of catching him - he beat me by 1 second - and absolute respect to him!!!
Chip time 26.51 and absolutely thrilled!! Based on my first 2M pace I did the last two miles in average of 6.30 pace. Yeehaw :)
Felt really good afterwards - not gasping for breath and legs felt strong.

Really good confidence boost for the next couple of weeks!!
Clearlier - do the Lotto this weekend you were very close when you said I would challenge 27mins!
This is now my 4M PB... Could I get down to under 26 in the new year??
7M interval tomorrow night - easy peasy. :)

8miles done this evening, 10:30 average which is about a minute over marathon pace. Glad to get out there and get a decent run in! Not quite back to full health but definitely a lot better than I have been.

Doc tomorrow and hopefully Dingle half on Saturday which I will treat as a training run given the circumstances.

Definitely felt the darkness creeping in early tonight, pitch black getting back at half 9. Bummer, loved the long evenings.

Well done! Good luck for the Dingle HM. I'd love to do that next year. Hope you'll post a report next week and all goes well. It'll be a nice little confidence booster for you hopefully after your setback. Are you doing the Dublin HM too!?
