All media outlets reporting the leaked squad as accurate this morning. Newstalk and RTE both reporting it as a given as well as the likes of the IT and Indo who have pieces by Ward and Thornley on the selection.

If it's not the squad, a lot of people are going to look pretty stupid at this point.

Can't sleep; here's a go at an unselected Ireland 23.

    Kilcoyne
    Herring
    Bent
    Touhy
    McCarthy
Ruddock (he still injured or just not ready for RWC yet? McLaughlin otherwise?)
    Ryan
    Conan (is Copeland fit?)

    Boss
    Keatley
    Healey
    Reid
    D'arcy
    Gilroy
    Jones

    Casey
    Buckley
    Ah You
    Holland? Kearney?
Coughlan (finally get him that cap!)
    Marmion
    JJ
    Conway

Jaysus, Trimble doesn't even make that squad!? Harsh. :D

I really like the probable squad, although only bringing 2 scrumhalves and 2 looseheads is a bit of a risk. Obviously the management team have weighed up the various risks and have backup plans in place for multiple scenarios of injuries to certain players and when they could happen. So just have to trust them now!

Delighted for Furlong, White and Cave.

Reddan and Murray in every matchday squad, Healy and McGrath in every matchday squad...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

Looks like the IRFU cut their losses and discreetly posted it after a balls up in the entire squad being leaked.

Does anyone know what the restrictions are on replacing injured players during the WC?

If it's a straightforward process to bring in a new player if a scrumhalf or tighthead gets injured in a game, then we can bring a replacement in for the next match. The fact that the world cup is on in the U.K. should make this transition easier as a player could be brought in overnight and begin training straight away

I'm genuinely pretty shocked at that. And frankly think the two looseheads and two scrum halves selection is dangerous and a bit stupid.

I think we need the answer to this in the OP!

You can replace injured players but the replaced player can then never return to the squad. There is 48 hours notice required before a replacement can train or play. This prevents what you're suggesting.

The scrum half thing I can live with, both the key guys are fully fit and it's not the most attritional position. I don't agree with it but there's some logic.

The loosehead call is a massive gamble. I just don't get it.

Healy must be ripping up trees. I don't get furlong over bent, unless he can actually pack down on the loose side..

    It's a gamble, but I don't see why it's needed..

    Anyway, in Joe we trust.

I would think they're quite embarrassed and had to make a decision early this morning when the news was absolutely everywhere.

Someone will get their hand slapped but it may well have come from World Rugby as opposed to any IRFU employee. Stupid of them to try and wait a full day after the squad is submitted to the governing body.

One of the best squads named, is more than good enough to reach the semi-finals. Anything more will be down to how well the squad gels

I don't think it's as big a gamble as it looks. Madigan will likely be the backup nine against Canada and Romania to give him game time there just in case he needs to fill in, and the selection at loosehead looks as though they're happy to simply call in a replacement if it becomes necessary. Injuries in the two days before a game are pretty unlikely, particularly if you're being careful with a player, so Schmidt is evidently happy to take an extra player elsewhere rather than have last-ditch cover for Healy

I would like to see how Madigan goes at 9. I went through a stage of thinking I would like to see him give it a go at Leinster, but then he seemed to be making some silly decisions at 10, and decision making is the tool of trade at 9. But after several weeks in Joe's school, he might be good.

Marmion........... must be disappointed. Strange decision (if true), but there you go

So Healy has a mild twinge when coming back that would put him out for a couple days and force him to miss the Canada game and instead we lose him for the whole tournament? He hasn't played yet, I know they have plenty of medical info but if he doesn't play this weekend they are seriously playing with fire.

I'm not even sure what point there is giving Madigan time against Canada or Romania. If he has to play 9 in a serious game for any length of time we're in serious trouble.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

Tend to agree on Madigan. Not a hope they can count on him in a game of any importance and the only reason for him appearing there at all in the opening two games is to wrap the others in cotton wool; 30 minutes there against a second tier nation isn't going to suddenly make him a viable bench option against Italy or France.

I believe they're just praying they don't suffer any injuries and can rotate Murray and Reddan throughout. If one of them cops an injury, they're either on the bench half crocked, or out of the squad entirely.

I would still have preferred to go one lighter in the backrow, considering the cover we have there from Ryan and Henderson, and have brought Kilcoyne.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,030 ✭✭✭✭phog

I'm not one bit surprised with the dropping of Boss but he's taking a gamble on Reddan and Murray staying fit.

The provinces have a lot to answer for really in that we're stuck if one of Reddan or Murray goes down injured.

Yeah it's a big issue that we only have 2 SH's deemed up to test rugby.

I wonder did Australia only selecting 2 SH's put the idea into our head, it wasn't really mooted at all prior to that.

Personally, I'd either have brought Bent to cover both sides and dropped Furlong, or brought Kilcoyne as LH and dropped Furlong.

I just can't see the logic in bringing three fully fit tightheads when Healy is still very much in doubt.

I feel a bit sorry for Kilcoyne - he really put his hand up. A bit inclined to give away penalties though.
