Just saw on twitter that the squad has been leaked? Some big calls if true!

They say that the current IRUPA Player of the Year is left out - that Paul O'Connell, not Andrew Trimble.

I don't get Trimble being left out unless fitness is the issue.

    The players know already.

I know they have found out already, but I just think it is cruel for the public announcement to be withheld for close to 48 hours. For example one of the players could have been told last night they are not going but have to see today that people are still discussing their involvement.

Rugby players are big fans of hanging out on internet message boards, right enough ;)

BeanBag Sports is click bait rubbish. Drives me nuts when they appear on my Twitter.

    "Shocking news about this player"

"You won't believe what happened to this club"

"Wow! This has to be seen to be believed"

To be fair, if I'm a player who would have hoped to make the squad and didn't, I'm fairly gutted.

I doubt I'm trawling through internet articles or forums today and even if so, I doubt seeing people discussing my possible inclusions makes it much worse

They could have at least got someone with half a brain to post the fake squad

So PJ is in that one but not in another... I think it's just chinese whispers imo.

I'm sorry but I'll be very slow to believe any squad that includes Darren Cave. Nothing against him, but it would be a massive shock.

And, ultimately, isnt that all that really matters? This observer would have to say yes

Yeah, difficult to blame them if they do. Tough moment

Who exactly is going to be our second choice 12 though? I cant believe Madigan is one injury away from starting a world cup semi final at 12. Not to mention the fact hed be an important bench player for us anyway if one of PJ or Sexton got injured. Cave might not be ideal but at least he could train the entire tournament in 1 position and probably start at least one of the group games there.

    But at whose expense?

Cave is probably next in line to start even if he's not in the squad imo unless it's late notice at which point I think we have other options than Madigan.

I think more than anyone, I'd be delighted for him. Unlucky in 2007, form deserted him in 2011, injury plagued for so much of his career, I'd be gutted for him if he missed out again.

But I always thought he'd make it and if you an inside line, then that's what I want to hear.

Just checked out BODs new site....

To borrow from an old saying

That man was touched by God to play rugby.....but definitely not to work with his web designer

Couldn't agree more. If he misses out he'll be arguably the best player in history to never make a World Cup (while it's been in existence)

Edit: that title would actually probably go to nacewa.....or was his one cap in a World Cup?

Maybe Im getting my numbers wrong but he could be included ahead of either Dave K or Zebo if necessary without leaving us particularly short in the back 3.

    Questions:
What are the RWC rules regarding calling up replacements for injured players to the squad of 31?
Is there a limit on the number of replacements that can be called up during the tournament?

If not, then there will simply be a pool of players on "standby", presumably playing with their clubs, that can be called upon at a moment's notice. If that is the case it therefore does not really matter for example, whether two or three outhalves are taken; given that should there be an injury, a replacement would be on the next Ryanair flight to Gatwick/Stansted/Luton...

    Wouldnt it be Aer Lingus?

It does matter, as the injured player cannot rejoin the squad. So if for example, Sexton got injured vs Italy, but it was a 10 day injury and he'd be fit for the quarter final, we can't call up a reserve 10 to fill in for the France game as Sexton is then ruled out for the rest of the tournament.

The big issue is the 48hr rule..

Any replacement cannot join the squad for 48hrs after they've been "sent for"...

Basically to level the field between Northern and Southern Hemisphere teams...

So - If a key player gets a knock during the captains run on the Friday, you can't have a replacement available for a Saturday game...

Hence the risk in only having 2 players covering a specific position.

There are lots of rules. But two important ones are

    1) you must give 48 hours notice before replacing a player
    2) a replaced player can not return to the squad

So there are lots of scenarios where it really matters who you picked in the original squad.

In fact, it's easier to list scenarios where it doesn't matter who you originally picked. Almost the only scenario in which this is the case is a long term injury, which occurs at least 48 hours before a game and you immediately know it's a long term injury.

This has been asked and answered a few times but I suppose that the thread moves very quickly.

There are limits in place that prevent what you're saying from being a reality.

Players have to be called up 48 hours in advance (IE they can't even train with the squad for 48 hours) and the player they replace can not rejoin the squad at any point.

If you Sexton was replaced by Jackson for example, it would need to be 48 hours prior to a game. And after that Sexton could not come back into the squad at all for the rest of the tournament. If Sexton got injured less than 48 hours in advance then we'd have no out half cover. If Sexton was only going to be missing for one week then the coaches have a choice of going without out half cover for one (potentially critical) game or else losing Sexton for the rest of the tournament.

Anyone who watched the last World Cup will remember that Rory Best was not replaced when he picked up a knock because Ireland wanted to give him a chance to get back for the knockout games (which he did).

This is strangely impressive...5.10pm and not a dicky bird of a half-reliable rumour doing the rounds.

Am I over-reading into this to think that this is an indication of how cohesive and tight this squad is?
