Thanks, yeah, still looking! Was hoping for some great back to school offer but I have yet to find one! :)

If you only use a laptop for casual internet surfing and the odd word document. A Chromebook is a good choice. They are cheap, light and have an unreal battery. They are quite limited in what they can do. But for their price, they are pretty good. My brother has used mine for the summer and loves how light it is. You can get one for about €200 off amazon. I use mine for college, as you dont have to worry about charing it constantly and its light enough/cool enough to type on your lap.

They dont work for everyone. They are perfect for my needs though

Tesco are radically reducing their product range in response to Aldi/Lidl (get better discounts for bigger volumes from suppliers for the remaining products and pass on cheaper prices to better compete is the logic) hence why you are seeing a lot of discounted products in Tesco at the mo for products not coming close to their sell by date.

Thats all well and good- however, morphing the discounters isn't going to do Tesco any favours- if the perception is that Aldi or Lidl's own brand products- esp. their fresh products which are predominantly sourced in this country- are of a vastly superior quality and lower price- than Tesco's- which are predominantly imported from the UK.

Further- at the other end of the market- you have people travelling long distances to go to Dunnes and indeed specialised shops- to get products that Tesco once sold- and while they're there- doing other grocery shopping too. For example- I'm popping into the Italian Supermarket for sundried tomatoes, green olive paste, and bog standard pasta- all for less than I might once have paid for them in Tesco- who don't stock them any longer- and I'm picking up other products there too- meaning my spend elsewhere is way down.

And then- you have the fightback from Lidl esp- who are now carrying lots of branded products that are familiar to Irish consumers.

Its a good time to be a consumer of Irish grocery products- however, its going to be brutal for the retailers.........

Musgraves and their chains- I imagine- are going to be the big loosers in all this- though I can't see Tesco coming out of this without a bloody nose.

That's all well and good, but I noticed one particular supplier's stock is all in the bargain bin, when I checked, I noticed they have a new supplier, unheard of and totally new to the business. So it seems, tesco are clearing their supplers, to get new ones and by being so new, they are getting excellent prices with longer credit terms.

I would never have noticed stuff like this before, but with money still being tight for me, I spend longer shopping, knowing prices and knowing the suppliers. Turns out the supplier tesco got rid of, supply aldi under Aldi name, so at least I can still get the products. Thanks to the Internet this info is easily available.

Had not been in Tesco for a while, so went in yesterday to stock up on clearance items, got lots still available, but have not missed them.

Sometimes I'm surprised that although my local Tesco is huge and carries a wide range of products, I still find it difficult to find what I would think of as common products and have to go elsewhere for them. Two that come to mind are wheatgerm and wheat bran. I did find Odlums wheat bran recently at Tesco but for a long time when I asked about it, I was directed to oat bran and told that people were no longer using wheat bran and that oat bran was regarded as the healthier alternative. Another one is Irel coffee - OK, not a particularly popular product but used to be a staple for baking years ago. Still stocked at Supervalu but not in Tesco.

Then there are the items that are carried in some stores but not others. I can find Clipper tea and Pilgrims Choice Cheddar in Greystones, Co Wicklow but they don't carry either of those in the much larger store in Claremorris.

I think that the whole clearance and discontinuing thing is probably going to annoy and confuse a lot of customers. I find it annoying when staple items are no longer where they used to be in the store.

I thought this was a thread for bargain alerts? I will have your job thanks!

I actually think there is little to no difference in the quality of goods between the UK and Ireland, they are of pretty much the exact same standard. Cheese, bread, milk, fruit, meats etc. Lidl and Aldi in the UK have the same great quality own brand stuff but its from the UK, not Ireland. The issue is not that Tesco are using UK produce, its the fact they are using the cheap crap UK produce which is trying to compete with quality UK and Irish foods from the German retailers.

One thing great about UK supermarkets, and its soooo evident when you nip over the border to NI, is just how much a bigger range of foods that are available in the UK, even Lidl and Aldi in the north have a wider selection of goods. Have you been to Asda or Sainsburys? So much choice.

can we move the retail industry discussion elsewhere and stick to the actual point of this thread? I'm getting tired of the off topic posts - a couple of weeks ago it was about Bord Gais payment methods, before that it was couponing. there are other forums and threads for such discussions - most of the people who read this thread are only interested in

actual bargain alerts, in Tesco stores.

Still #2 on Kantar I believe (although I suspect they've a base load of rural customers with zero other options) - they may be able to position SuperValu as a Waitrose-alike in the market, if Tesco continue to try and become the third discounter. Actually, Superquinn used to stock some Waitrose products, they should probably investigate that as an option.

I've long since moved my 'specialist' shopping to an asian warehouse in Liffey Valley due to Tesco stripping lines that they were the sole supplier of.
