It's nice to see the BBC have a decent archive of Irish Rock performances.

It's more than you could say for RTE. They never really found a home for Rock/Pop (although many of these bands would have appeared on The Late Late Show at some point)

There was something very unsetlling about the early 90's, looking back.

I miss the 90's, I sadly didn't appreciate the greatness of the music that was around at the time.

Hozier falls into that genre, for me, of Irish people I like and want to see succeed, but have next to no interest in listening to.

    Like Imelda May. And U2.

Just noticed bbc4 are doing more science documentaries now. Jim Al-Khalili on tomorrow night. BBC4 is becoming a real gem.

Well, I'm sorry I can't do this with the skillage Skid normally does - hey, let's blame the limitations of the old internet phone - but luckily this week I kinda don't have to.

Because, you see, tomorrow is wall to wall Sinatra (again, for the love of Sammy Davis Jnr.!), and Saturday has flip all apart from an old TOTP and Rock N Roll at the BBC, which to be fair looks good, if a little familiar.

    So there!

    Sunday looks like Cilla-time....

    BBC4 9PM Sunday 16th August
Much-mourned national treasure Cilla Black commenced her eminent career as a TV host in 1968 on the BBC.

Her career as perhaps the nation's favourite female pop singer of the decade had already been established after landing her first Number 1 with Anyone Who Had a Heart, the biggest-selling hit by a female singer in the 1960s.

This tribute compilation celebrates the BBC's coverage of Cilla's '60s pop star years on programmes like Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's Not Only...But Also, The Ken Dodd Show, Top of the Pops and The Royal Variety Performance, before selecting just some of the golden moments from the long-running self-titled series she hosted for the BBC between 1968 and 1976 including the Paul McCartney-penned theme song Step Inside Love and that 1973 famous duet with Marc Bolan on Life's A Gas.

Yeah, not a whole lot on this weekend. I didn't get around to doing the listings but apart from Frankie's continuing adventures it's a lot of repeats.

I did spot this today, looks good although it won't be aired until October ...

"This October, BBC Four tells the definitive story of indie music with a series about the genre that became the soundtrack to a generation.

The channel will broadcast a new three-part documentary series, The Story Of Indie (working title), which charts the evolution of alternative music from the its inception in the late 1970s with the explosion of independent record labels and their associated acts, to the boom of the genre in the ‘80s, onto its demise following the mainstream success of its Britpop successor in the ‘90s, and finally its legacy and influence in the current music scene.

This inside story on the pioneering approach to music is a must for music lovers, and features the best songs of the era, archive video footage and exclusive anecdotes from the people who were there and central to the scene.

Well, this weekend is a bit like the Off Licence at 9.55pm on Holy Thursday. Everything you want is missing, but there might be something you like if you look hard enough. BBC Four rip through the last two episodes of Frank Sinatra's Story. Will they mention that Dana Carvey from Wayne's World was in the Hospital room beside Frank's when he died? Probably not ...

    Friday

    9.40pm & 2.15am Sinatra: All Or Nothing At All (Parts 3 & 4)
Up-close and personal examination of the life, music and career of legendary entertainer Frank Sinatra, told in his own words from hours of archived interviews, along with commentary from those closest to him. Featuring previously unseen footage from home movies and concert performances, including his legendary 1971 `retirement concert' in Los Angeles, this tribute to the showman follows Sinatra's growth from roadhouse performer to global singing sensation

11.40pm Film: On The Town (1949)
Musical following three sailors who are out for a good time while on a day's shore leave in New York. One tries initially to fend off the advances of a female taxi driver, another is pulled into helping with an anthropologist's study of prehistoric man, while the third seeks out the model in a famous advertising campaign - but finds she is not quite what he expected. With Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin

1.15am Duets: The Andy Williams Show
A selection of the veteran performer's favourite duets recorded during his decade-long run as host of a weekly variety show on the American network NBC. Featuring Bing Crosby, Ray Charles, Johnny Mathis and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as Judy Garland singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and Ray Charles with What'd I Say

    3.15am Sounds of The Sixties
n Living Colour The late 1960s saw the first regular transmission of colour television, and the music world followed the trend with the launch of BBC television show Colour Me Pop. This episode features some of the programme's highlights, including performances by the Who, the Kinks, the Small Faces, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and the Jimi Hendrix Experience

9.35pm (RTE1) The Imelda May Show
The singer-songwriter celebrates Ireland's love of music with chat and performances by musicians and new acts, with guests including Marc Almond, Camille O'Sullivan, the Bionic Rats, Mike Sanchez and Delorentos. Last in the series

11.25pm (TG4) Ar Stáitse: Leo Sayer
Leo Sayer 1 Part one of two. Leo Sayer performs some of his best-loved songs, including More Than I Can say, One Man Band, Giving It All Away and When I Need You, in a programme recorded in 1984

    11.40pm (RTE2) Other Voices
Music show celebrating new and innovative talent, featuring Wild Beasts, Melanie De Biaso, Wyvern Lingo and Staring at Lakes

    Saturday

10.50pm Top of The Pops: 1979 - Big Hits
A look at the year music went portable with the launch of the Sony walkman, and saw the Mod revival and 2-tone music flourish with the Jam, the Specials, Madness and the Selecter. New Wave also thrived with Elvis Costello, Squeeze and Gary Numan. On a more comical note, Dame Edna Everage's performance of Waltzing Matilda made a big impression, incongruously alongside reggae-influenced punk rock band the Ruts. Elsewhere, Chas & Dave continued their success story with Gertcha

11.50pm Status Quo: Live and Acoustic
A compilation of footage from Status Quo's 2014 live appearance at London's Roundhouse, where they performed acoustic versions of their best-known hits, including Pictures of Matchstick Men, Rockin' All Over the World, Whatever You Want, What You're Proposing, Down Down, and Marguerita Time. Playing alongside a string section, Francis and Rick reminisce about their career and recall some of the stories behind their classic songs

    12.50am Sounds of The Eighties
Showcasing a selection of musical performances from the BBC archives, featuring the Teardrop Explodes, Orange Juice, Robert Wyatt, Aztec Camera, Billy Bragg, the Fall, Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians, the Pogues and the Style Council

2.10pm (BBC1) Climbed Every Mountain - The Story Behind The Sound of Music
Sue Perkins travels to Salzburg, Ellis Island and Vermont to discover the true story behind the real Von Trapp family, who were portrayed in the Sound of Music almost 50 years ago

    10pm (RTE1) Ceiliúradh

12.35am (RTE1) The Imelda May Show
    same as yesterday

    Sunday

9pm (Channel 4) Film: Les Miserables
Premiere. A former prisoner tries to lead an honest life in post-revolutionary France, despite being pursued everywhere by a fanatical police inspector. He promises a poverty-stricken factory worker that he will raise her child, a relationship that gives his life new meaning, but both of them are drawn into an uprising against the reinstated monarchy. Musical, starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway

If you have the Sky Arts you can watch Fleetwood Mac and Scott Walker on Saturday, and four hours of Johnny Cash from 8pm on Sunday. But if you tune in too early on Sunday you will find Neil Se**ka, whose reign of terror has spread beyond BBC Four.

If you like slightly cheesy Beatles Films (and who doesn't?), True Movies 1 has In His Life: The John Lennon Story on Saturday at 1pm

And it's on Youtube if that's better for you. Your man who uploaded it has some good stuff on his channel. Which is more than can be said for most of the Television Stations!

I think BBC Four has squeezed enough juice out of the late 70s/early 80s. The same performances are always popping up.

They should make more TOTP2, and feature some later appearances. Like the Britpop era. It's 20 years old now  but it doesn't get much rotation on the BBC.

Go on, BBC Four. Mark Radcliffe could do with the work. If you don't make it, BBC2 will!

Elvis won't be 81 until next January 8th. He's up in the top field chasing a sheep at the moment but he sends his best.

Hello, it's a strange weekend where the Proms and the Reading and Leeds Festivals battle for airtime on BBC Four. Mumford and Sons, Metallica and the Libertines get their full sets on air but everyone else is relegated to highlights on the iPlayer and the BBC website next week.

    Friday

7.30pm Friday Night at The Proms
Clemency Burton-Hill and Clarke Peters present as jazz singer Clare Teal, trumpeter Guy Barker and multi-instrumentalist Winston Rollins tell the story of the birth of swing, including tributes to `King of Swing' Benny Goodman and trombonist and bandleader Tommy Dorsey. Special guests include saxophonist Denys Baptiste, singer Elaine Delmar and American baritone Jamie Davis

9.45pm Queens of Jazz: The Joy and Pain of the Jazz Divas
Celebrating the achievements of five female jazz singers of the 20th century - Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan and Nina Simone. The film examines how these artists managed to triumph against the odds at a turbulent time in America's social history. With contributions by singers including Annie Ross, Lisa Stansfield, Melody Gardot and Gregory Porter and critics such as Gary Giddins, Dave Gelly and Alvin Hall

    10.45pm Mumford & Sons @ Reading 2015
The London rock band return to the festival for the first time since 2010, as Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane take to the Main Stage as the first headliners of the weekend

12.45am Country Kings at the BBC
A chronological compilation of performances from the BBC archive by male country singers, ranging from the Everly Brothers and Jerry Lee Lewis to Garth Brooks and Willie Nelson. Featuring classic songs from studio shows by Glen Campbell, Charley Pride, George Hamilton IV, Kenny Rogers, Clint Black, Johnny Cash and Eric Church

1.45am Country Queens at the BBC
A compilation of archive performances by female country-music stars from a variety of BBC studio shows. Featured acts include Bobbie Gentry, Anne Murray, Emmylou Harris, Taylor Swift, Crystal Gayle, Tammy Wynette, Billie Jo Spears, and Lucinda Williams with Mary Chapin Carpenter

    2.45am Sounds Of The Sixties
The Folk Revival Folk performances by artists including Pete Seeger, Tim Buckley, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen

    11.35pm (RTE2) Other Voices
With Edinburgh-based pop and hip-hop act Young Fathers, who won the 2014 Mercury Prize for their debut album Dead. The programme also features Brooklyn indie duo Buke and Gase, New York collective August Wells and Dublin folk band Ye Vagabonds

11.45pm (TG4) Ar Stáitse (Leo Sayer)
Part two of two. More songs from Leo Sayer's 1984 Siamsa Cois Laoi concert, including Orchard Road, Raining in My Heart, I Can't Stop Loving You and The Show Must Go On

    Saturday

    10.40pm Metallica @ Reading 2015
The heavy metal band takes the prestigious headline spot at the music festival for a record fourth time, having first headlined 18 years ago

    12.40am Heavy Metal Britannia
Documentary tracing the genre's emergence in the late 1960s, pioneered by bands including Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, who were based in the industrialised Midlands. This classic form of metal was challenged by punk in the late 1970s, before a new wave of groups such as Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Saxon reinvigorated the style. Featuring contributions by singers Ian Gillan, Glenn Tipton, Lemmy, Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford, guitarist Tony Iommi and keyboard player Jon Lord. Narrated by Nigel Planer

2.10am Classic Albums: Black Sabbath's Paranoid
The making of Black Sabbath's second album Paranoid, which was released in 1970 and helped define the sound and style of heavy metal. The programme tells the story of how Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward created the record, and features contributions by Phil Alexander, Geoff Barton, Henry Rollins and Jim Simpson

    Sunday

    10.30pm The Libertines @ Reading 2015
Coverage of the band's performance on the main stage at the music festival, which sees them return to the site of their famous reunion concert five years previously and comes ahead of the release of their third album Anthems for Doomed Youth

Elsewhere Sky Arts has The Eagles (Friday), Paul McCartney/The Beatles (Saturday) and Iron Maiden (Sunday)

I can't see much music related movie action, so if you haven't seen the epic cult classic Taffin (TG4, 10.25pm) then I urge you to put that right.

The Trailer alone has most of Glenroe, bits of Fair City, Pierce Brosnan, Alison Doody, Music from The Farmers Journal Ad and The Theme to Treasure Hunt. And it doesn't have the part which created Adam and Joe's (BBC 6Music) greatest ever running joke
