My mission for the season, not to get upset at Rodgers handling of the squad.

Its metro talk and other unreliable stuff. How you can put any credence into those, I don't know.

Lucas has been gone every Summer under Rodgers so we'll see on that one. Hopefully blows over as it did before.

It's coming from the more reliable guys this time, although I haven't seen anything to suggest that Sakho will leave.

Where's the talk of Sakho and Moreno being moved on coming from? I don't think Rodgers has come out and said it has he?

Surely in that case it's the rags and gutter journalists that you should be confused by.

Sakho has been at the club a few years and still hasn't made a name for himself. I think he's probably our best defender but there's something keeping him out of the team regularly. Maybe Rodgers is considering selling him for whatever reason. I can't see Moreno being sold this year though. Despite his poor defensive efforts last season he's only young and fresh off the boat. He'll hopefully be around for another while giving him time to improve and settle.

A certain "reliable journalist" has been peddling it on an online forum, but I think it his more his personal opinion than actual fact or insider knowledge, he has the same opinion on Markovic too.

Personally out of them 3 and Lucas I would be surprised if it was more than 1 of the 4 to move on, probably Lucas.

In fairness how do people expect us to be able to afford Reus if we don't sell Sakho, Moreno and Lucas?

All those rumours hold as much weight imo.

He can't possibly be moving Sakho on while keeping faith with Lovren.

Why would he move Sakho on, we have tried to get 2 players for every position, so I think if any of Lucas, Sakho or Moreno leave, they need to be replaced.

Its not beyond belief that Lucas will go. Rodgers prefers more adaptable players playing deep. Players like Milner Hendo Can and Allen who can sit deep or play further forward if required. High energy players who constantly close down. Lucas (who I have really liked for a long long time) just isnt fit enough anymore to play that role. Its unfortunate but he is very very dispensable in our squad.

and before people start chiming in with "we dont have a Matic type player in Milner Hendo Can and Allen"........................ we are not Chelsea!!!! Arsenal dont have a Matic, United dont have a Matic hell even City dont have a Matic. Chelsea play very differently to how we play and that is why we dont have nor need a Matic

Not beyond belief that he will go but realistically he probably shouldn't. There will be times when playing defensively is exactly what we should be doing and we've got nobody better than Lucas at CM for that job. United have Schneiderlin and he's the player a lot of people in here were calling out for over the past few seasons.

Lucas I think is the only one mentioned by anyone reliable I think, and he was just assuming, which of course was picked up elsewhere.

Sure we'd Traore signed for 15 million last week, we'll see.

Arsenals problem is they don't have a DM.

United have schneiderlin and City have Delph, and Fernandino.

I don't trust our defence not have a DM in front of it.

I saw all this with Sakho weeks ago:P . Sakho,Moreno & Markovic 3 committee signings who are out of favour atm.

David Maddock is saying that Rodgers wants to replace Lucas with Carvalho or Illarramendi. Carvalho is injured for three months, however, but I definitely feel like he's the better of the two.

Would cost substantially more, I imagine.

But would Schneiderlin really suit the way we look to play?

He is a great player no doubt but he would slow down our game play and that would blunt our quick attacks. That is often the same that is said about Lucas.

Delph is nowhere near a defensive player though. He does a job but he isnt actually much better (if at all better*) than our Joe to be fair. He has a good eye for pass and he does a lot of running. I think Joe would have done a similar if not better job for Villa than Delph.

    * this is not saying that either are good enough to be first choice midfielders for a top 4 challenge by the way

Now dont get me wrong guys I am not arguing against having a top class def mid. If it where up to me I would go all out to get Masherano back and have him protect our defence. I would also play with 2 strikers. In fact my formation and style of play would probably be very different to Rodgers (his style would def be prettier on the eye).

I like the strong calm tough approach that aims at making the most out of set pieces and slow build up play rather than just wave after wave attacks that come to nothing.

Top class "defensive" deep midfielders slow the game down and that is completely against Rodgers game plan

Carvalho would be a very good signing, even if he is injured

Aquilani and Carroll worked out brilliantly ;)

Exactly. I think we have had enough injury prone players at the club. Wouldnt mind if this was Caravlhos first injury in awhile but the guy is as bad as Agger. Could you imagine the crap in here if we signed him "at least he will forma partnership with Sturridge in the physio room"

I think a prerequisite from now on is that players must not be injured for more than a month (accumulative) a season for at least 5 years before they sign for us

Selling Lucas and bringing in Illaramendi would make no sense. If Lucas goes I don't see a replacement coming in IMO.

It would be a mistake to let Lucas go and replace with the wrong player, if Carvalho is the player we want and are sure we can get him. With a leg break, I think we could manage his rehabilitation as well as anyone. But that would be a big risk.

Why would it make no sense ? Really like Lucas but illararmendi is a step or two above Lucas

Why would it make no sense? I don't think Illaramendi is a very long-term signing (only 3 years younger than Lucas), but would be an improvement...

If that's true and Rodgers really is looking for a DM upgrade on Lucas then I think we should look at some German made efficiency along the lines of Bender brothers.

I just happy that if it is true that Rodgers is starting to see the squad does need a DM in it.

Carvalho will cost around £30m. I don't see us spending that on him.

Don't we already have this player in Can? Capable of the defensive work, as proven at CB last year, and comfortable taking the ball forward when the need arises. I think he's the ready made replacement.

Rodgers is not interested in dedicated defensive midfielders, if Lucas hadn't already been on the books he'd never have been looked at by Rodgers. Emre Can with Milner and Henderson will become the central trio whether we think its a good idea or not.
“I was just in Liverpool,” German u21 boss Horst Hrubesch told TZ in a recent interview before revealing the the 21-year old was headed for big things at Anfield. “There was confirmed that Emre soon to assume the role of Gerrard in midfield.”

    Can imagine Martin Tyler struggling with that;

"Bender passes to Bender....back to Bender....Great through ball from Bender, he's put Bender through on goal."

Just take one Brendan, spend the rest on self portraits.

Carvalho though isn't just a dedicated destroyer. He is a weird hybrid that is quite rare in a player. Maddock says Rodgers is a long time admirier and I can see why. He is a deep play maker with great passing ability, can break lines and also is very displined while being good defensively with a tactical football brain.

    Yup.

If Lucas leaves and Can & Allen were injured/suspended Milner would drop back imo, plenty options for the AM positions.

Won't be music to some ears but that's life.

Lucas might well not fancy a bitpart role.

Cant see it happening, be great though, he is the quarterback Gerrard crossed with mascherano (almost).

I understand the wariness, but a tibia stress fracture is a pretty straightforward heal, AFAIK - http://www.espnfc.com/sporting-lisbon/story/2522352/arsenal-william-carvalho-ruled-out-for-three-months-sporting
