"an error occured, please try again later": hopefully not an omen.:P

Seriously though Donegal are the one team I fear apart from Dublin and Kerry. Hideous cliche but they can beat anyone on their day, as they demonstrated pretty conclusively last year...

Absolutely agree. The closer the game gets the harder I find to call it.

You absolute ******!!! Just watched those HL there and has me panicking again! Didn't think we would succumb to a 2013 result again but getting worried after watching that video that it could be very one sided again!

Great to watch that again, I rank it as the best prepared team performance I've even watched live. They nailed everything, every battle. The intensity Mayo brought to that game was fantastic.

I know Donegal were knackered that year, but still.

I'm glad I kicked it off again in here though :)

Donegal will be knackered again on sat and any niggles or strains that they picked up will be still there.

Anyone listen to the Mayo News podcast.

To be honest it made me nervous as hell.

In the podcast they seemed to highlight so many ways that Mayo are vulnerable.

Their poor history with defensive teams, the questionable back line etc.
But they still came to the conclusion that Mayo would win.

For a while now I have been under the impression that Donegal are out of steam, the second half v Galway seemed to buck that trend, I hope it was a once off.

One of my best days inside Croke Park and so many highlights.
    Cillian O'Connor hat-trick.
Aidan O'Shea delivering one the best performances I've ever seen from a player in red and green.
Keith Higgin's handpass to Vaughan for the second goal.
Cleaning out their midfield in the first half.
Kevin Keane going up to kick a great score near the end.

Donegal were spent but to destroy the then All-Ireland champions like that was special, it was just revenge pure and simple.

Hopefully we see that level of intensity tomorrow!

Yeah 3 intriguing games. Great value to be honest for 25e.
I'll even grab the first half of the foreign sport at 12:45 before I head in!
Hopefully you win the Juniors and leave the Seniors to us!!

It will take a very good Junior side to beat this Kerry selection. If ye do it'll be a good boost to the seniors as well I'd say.

After the Ulster Final I thought Mayo would win handily enough, but there were sparks in the Qualifier win over Galway that would make me fear for Mayo a bit.

Donegal have a set pattern of a quick start, a lull before half time and then a solid push all the way to Full Time. The key is to do what Monaghan did and hit Donegal hard during their lull and then restrict their scoring chances up until full time.

If Mayo go into this game thinking only about how they are going to attack Donegal's blanket defence, then I'd fear for them.

When Kerry beat them in the All Ireland, they worked on restricting Donegals attack and put Faith in the forwards to score enough with the chances that they got to win the game.

If Mayo do this then I think the likes of COC, AOS Moran and Dillon have enough football in them to win the game.

    Should be a cracker.

It's this kind of analysis that worries the hell out of me.
I cant see Mayo do anything but attack from the get go, try to build a lead and know that Donegal have not been great when they have to chase a game.
But by chasing the game they put Murphy up front and cause havoc in the Mayo backs, and we know from last year that Mayo are not great at defending leads.

But Mayo may never be able to get that lead in the first place from what we have seen previously against blanket defences.

Mayo should have more on the tank than Donegal, and I have been hardly impressed my Donegal's form overall, hopefully they die on their feed chasing Mayo all over the field.

And hopefully this Mayo is a different animal once again, one that is smarter v the blanket and more ruthless overall, and to be honest I think they are.

Quick question which hopefully someone can help. Who will be kicking frees tomorrow from right wing? Know villain o Connor will take all 45s central frees and frees off left side. Kevin mc loughlin only left footer I know of in forwards but could be wrong

We won't know until tomorrow. Bench is looking strong these days, expect to see Barry Moran and Ronaldson in at some stage.

It will be same bench as last day Im afraid. Culture in Mayo squad selections of loyalty. We should try Regan but we won't.

we should try Regan IF he is showing better in training than the other players in his position. we don't know if he is. we don't know if he is even up to inter county speed after the layoff.
If he is he may be a great option.......I say may as we have seen many a great club player fail to take off at county level. I've a feeling it may be next year before he gets to show us of he is or not.
anyway can't wait for it now. I've a feeling Cillian is going to have a big big day with all the focus on Aidan O Shea

Vaughan named at 3 and cafferkey in the corner. How do you think mayo backs will line out?? Kevin keane would have been preferable option at 3 to match murphy or neil Gallagher for physicality.

After seeing the trouble donaghy gave him last year I wouldn't be confident having cafferkey at fullback which makes me think donie Vaughan could line out there. Could be completely wrong but interesting hear mayo fans thoughts on this as whoever plays this position will be pivotal to winning/loosing of tomorrow's game. See on seo spoilt on tg4 tonight that they think that tom parsons could be a surprise selection there to deal with physicality of murphy

Iam thinking kkean will be full back I don't see the team named starting. Parsons to go back if we have a lead in the last 15 mins of the game to give a dig out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,547 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

I think Parsons is the right man to have under those long balls. He was easily MOTM against Sligo for all the hard work he did (of course the scorers will always get the plaudits, which is fair enough) ano he looked top class under the high-balls from the kick-outs. Putting him into the fullback spot when defending a lead is a great idea, but I'd go even further and start him there. We still have Barry Moran to fill in for him in the middle, who despite not being the player he was a few years ago, is still well capable of winning the midfield battles. Parsons at full back could be the perfect way to force Donegal to keep their distance and settle for points, and with the amount of wides they hit in the last two games, it could be a good strategy.

Not really much of a regular poster around here, usually just a lurker, but trust me I support my county all year round, not just a fair-weather fan, so I'll try to post a bit more here from now on. Will be at Croker tomorrow cheering on the green and red, expecting a big performance and if we come through it, we'll be battle-hardened for the semi against Dublin. Hope the weather is good and safe travels to everyone off to Dublin tomorrow!

Never knew his father was from Galway. Such a shame he located to Mayo as we could have done with Keith Higgins in the last 10 years! A wonderful player.

Have seen both mayo and Donegal live this year in their matches against Galway. I'd fancy Mayo, they just seem to be that little bit ahead. Not sure why I think that as Mayo beat Galway by 4 points, Galway did improve and refine their team through the qualifiers and Donegal beat a better Galway team by 9 points. But football isn't always that black and white.

Mac niallais was fantastic against Galway. Everybody talks of how to combat Murphy but if Mac niallais continues his form into the Mayo match them Mayo need a plan for him.
