So i got an unexpected phone call from microsoft this morning and ruined my full 4 hours im in a very bad mood now.
the guys were indian and were wasting my time.
they asked me to type in cntrl and r.
and they said there are errors and warnings.
then he told me to open up windows explorer and type in showmypc.com
and then download something and followed and i gave him my number and then he started controlling it?!:confused::mad:
i kind of believed the guy as he explained the warnings and errors quite well that they can destroy my computers files etc.

i got very very very nervous as he had control of my computer?
then i turned it off and he got very angry, and gave out to me as i asked him how long would it take and then he furiously said it will take even more time now because i turned it off?
then the things started getting sketchy as he started asking FOR MONEY!
It made me go wild and i gave him some sh!t afterwards and he was like sir slow down your voice, you need to pay or else i'll call the cops to your house, whats your address?
At this stage i knew the guy was calling from a foreign country as he said he was based in DUBLIN?

He threatened to call the cops to my house haha?
I'm just wondering where he got my number from and how do they know ive a computer with problems?
Also he threatened to block my computer and it'll never work again?

I'm just relieved my computer is fine...

    Welcome to scam calls.

It's a scam I'm afraid. I'd check your phone bill too just in case they managed to reverse call charges on to you.

They didn't know your phone number, they just call every number.

They didn't know you had a computer with problems, they just tell everyone the same story and eventually someone will bite.

Your computer is now definatly NOT fine. Do not reconnect it to the internet.

You should now change all of your online passwords for any website or email, keep an eye out for suspicious activity on your bank accounts or cards and probably completely wipe and reinstall the OS on your PC.

Thanks for that Rob appreciate it a lot!

Can anyone help me return the programs that were on the left hand side of my screen?
    Like the recycling box etc?

Did you reconnect it to the net?
They can remotely control your computer, it's not the placement of your icons you need to be worrying about

Because you have no idea what else he might have installed on it; malware, keyloggers, etc.

Go get your PC exorcised by a professional PDQ.

Op, turn the bloody computer off!

Delete what you like, you've already given them the access they need. Your computer needs to go to a specialist who can wipe it entirely.

Get your computer seen to by an expert. You dont know what they have installed on it. If you have any photos/music on there that you want to keep then do not reconnect that computer to the internet until you have had it seen to and an expert can extract them cleanly.

Yeah, I'm afraid you've been thoroughly done. There are ways to sort it out yourself, but your best bet is really to get it into the specialists immediately. It's a pain in the ass lesson, but it could have been much worse. At least you'll never fall for that one again!

I'm only on mobiles myself, so I don't get much of this sort of thing, but anyone remember when MSN was plagued by these guys and similar scams? Rarely if ever had that on skype, but MSN was horrendous for it. I used to have entire conversations with them pretending to be an automated system downloading crap onto their computers. Most of them weren't savvy enough to know that I couldn't be doing it either, which could get fairly entertaining when they started panicking. They usually left me alone fairly quickly.

My parents used to get those calls. Luckily, they knew what was happening.

    Can anyone help with what?

You've been told by numerous people to turn off your computer but you've turned it back on again.

You've been told to bring it to a specialist, so go do that.

It's not just turning off your computer. Take out the power cords and take it straight to a specialist, explaining what happened. Don't worry, you won't be the first person to have this done to them.

    Don't panic too much.

Some good YouTube videos of people catching them out. Some set up virtual PCs and one even managed to track down the scammer's IP address.

They are probably using a proxy or vpn though. Like Inidians will be using for porn soon!

Send computer to a specialist or wipe the hdd. Change all passwords to emails, bank details, etc once its cleaned. Or use different computer to change details.

If your not a techie, turn off the PC, before you end up bricking it.

Don't change any passwords until you take it to a specialist!!

They may have installed a keylogger, so it wouldn't achieve anything.

Or at least don't change passwords on that device.

He might have been so pissed because he didn't get to finish, but just in case i would change HDD/Passwords. If you use credit card on it, ring the bank and let them know what happened.
