Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Group races, Ireland & England, 2015, flat

    • I will bet on group races in 2015: Group 1, 2, 3, some listed.
    • The bank will be small, probably €200.
    • Each bet will be about 1.5% of the bank at the time of the bet.
    • Because the stakes are small I will use a betting exchange.
    • I will try to ignore the traditional influences: previous form/going/distance, trainer, jockey, rumour, engagements, comments.
    • Bets will be win only, with possibly a few place lays.
    • I will post the bet very close to race time. This will avoid comment before the race, and allow me choose my price.
    • If nothing appeals, or odds are low, no bet.
    • My pedigree analysis will guide me.
    • Reasons for the selections will not be disclosed, as explanations would be too confusing (some may feel this goes against the thread sticky).
    Below is a list of the 2014 Group races and the day the race was held in 2014.

    I have been doing a bit of work on the 2014 Group races.
    My idea is to run my pedigree selection process over the 2014 races to see if it is a goer or not.
    If my selections can produce something around break-even against the 2014 returned bookmaker starting prices there may be profit potential on Betfair.

    Comments:
    The above lists of turned over odds-on shots and long priced winners are not part of the selection process. They are just amusing output from the 214 2014 Group races.
    Some trainer/Jockey combinations were often beaten at odd-on, but the betting public decide the price.
    Many of the beaten odds-on horses lost on good to firm. My guess is the ground was firm but racecourses do not like to say that.
    6f is a regular odds-on losing distance, especially with good to firm ground.
    Soft ground produced many long-priced winners, but good to firm (probably firm) also featured.

    The average price of winners was between 11/4 and 3/1.
    Only ten winners were 16/1 or higher.

    Before betting on Group races in 2015 I decided to run my “system” over the 2014 races to see what would have happened if I used the “system” in 2014.
    I used the 2014 race history and started with a €200 bank. Betting 2% of the declining bank on each race would have left the bank at €33.21 (an 83.4% loss) at the end of the year. Selections were based on a pedigree “system”.

    There were 29 winners; 185 losers.
    The system picked these long-priced losers:
    7 x 100/1 shots; 4 x 66/1; 6 x 50/1; 2 x 40/1; 4 x 33/1; 1x28/1; 24 x 25/1; 1 x 22/1 (a winner); 8 x 20/1; 1 x 18/1; 8x16/1; 15 x 14/1; 4x 12/1; 7 x 11/1; 11 x 10/1 (one winner) = 101 losers; 2 winners. 27 of the 29 winners were 9/1 or less.

    I doubt I would have backed 7 horses at 100/1 and the others at high odds above.
    Using hindsight :rolleyes: what would have happened if I picked the highest ranked horse paying odds of 9/1 or less? This might cause me to reject my first four or five rated horses to find one that the public rate as a contender. It gives 53 winners; 161 losers with a closing bank of €152.57 for a loss of €47.43. (using bookies SP). Assuming about 10% better prices with Betfair it would still only be slightly above break even.

    There is a positive correlation between my pedigree rating and race finishing positions but as yet not enough to make money. It is nice to know a horse I might have rated 8th actually finished 10th but that does not pay.

    I am now starting another version of the analysis.

    From the beginning of July I have had no broadband.
    That is the reason I have not posted selections.
    You can't Imagine the problems I had.
    At about the ninth attempt my broadband was restored at 22:40 tonight.

    No broadband meant my British Open golf bets could not be managed in running.
    I could not access horse racing sites or pedigree sites.
