Jesus. Out tonight, Coronas gig, great food after, more pints after. Come home and find out an old mate has killed himself. Sitting here wondering what it's all about. Tears in my eyes. Can't f*cking believe it.

That's terrible news. He had his reasons and thought that was the easiest way out. My cousin did the same thing a few years back and it is really hard to fathom. No shame in an oul cry. Try to remember the good times you had with him.

That's really tough man. My thoughts are you and with him and his family. Reach out if you want to. Gather together and remember him properly. Sorry for your loss.

    Sorry to hear that zzippy!
I've had quite a lot of exclusive of that myself. Its a silent epidemic in this country. Don't try to reason it out, that's no good for anyone. Give him a good send off.

    The hurling.

Galway were pretty average too but just beat Cork handily.

Cork were awful. Glynn's interview afterwards was hilarious. "F*ckin bull****" live on tv... :D

Lads, I'm from Kerry....you've a better chance of me shouting for Leinster than giving a monkeys left nut about hurling

I played hurling in college with a lad from Kerry... Ballyheigue I think. He was handy enough. Also debated the merits of hurling v football with Pat Spillane once and he admitted hurling was a far better sport. ;)

Did the 100km distance on the tour of Meath today. Christ alive - probably the toughest day I've had in the saddle. A wimpy 800 metres of climbing, but only three notable hills so lots of little rolling ones. The rain was constant and it didn't matter what way we travelled there was always a head wind.

Great day on the bike though. Averaged 22 kph. Not the best I've ever done but given the conditions I was happy out!

That Meath tour is the easiest of all the An Post series. Rain and wind would make it miserable alright though!

I did it the year the jersey for it was bright pink and it's still one of my favourite cycling jerseys.

    Sounds rough!

Its funny you should post this now because I've been looking at this today online...

Could you or anyone else here give me a bit of advice for buying my first bike? I'd be going through the bike to work scheme and I'm looking for something just for a general bit of exercise. I live in the city centre and don't really have a car that could transport a bike so I'd just be looking to cycle from my door to wherever and back.

So I guess I'm wondering 1) what sort of bike to get? 2) where to get it? 3) where to cycle once I do get it?

I've had to complety rethink my bike purchase, I'm taking the family to eurodisney in November and fck me!...its expensive..
Asked my local bike shop if I can give them a fiver a week for the next 6 years :):)

If you are looking to use it for exercise then a road bike is the way to go.

I got mine in FitzCycles in Stillorgan. Good shop who'll talk to you and figure out what you need. Really you just need to decide on what type you want and then pick a model at your price range that you like the look of.

Remember when you get the bike to buy a pair of bib shorts. You can buy cheap jerseys online for cheap, but you'll want a decent pair of shorts.

Think the Burren is probably easier - a friend of mine did both and found the Burren better. It was enjoyable today though despite the rain!

Spend the full €1000 on the bike.

Get a road bike. The basic / entry level bikes around the €1000 mark tend to have a similar level of quality in them - essentially you choose which colour you prefer!!

Try the bike before you buy! Most shops will let you.

Where are you based? Any local bike shop is good, probably better than their big warehouse counterparts. I got mine in mcquaids in Ballygal.

Where to cycle... The world is your oyster!! Depends again on where you live. Most of the city is within a few km of country roads that will get you good and practiced. I live north side so do lots of spins around the airport / north county dublin, but I've recently started to brave the Wicklow mountains (more difficult to get to without a car!).

Start small and build up - a 10km loop to get you started and then just do a few km extra a week. Try throw a few hills into your route - the more you practice them the easier they get.

Invest in a pair of padded shorts. And go commando under them. Nothing worse than the chaffing.

Pick a sportive and train for it. They're on every weekend over the summer, and most have a few distance options that you can find one to cater to your fitness. The one I did today had 50, 100 and 160.

I started cycling in January after having to give up rugby with a shoulder injury and I never looked back. I cycled 195 km in March from Maynooth to Galway (at 25kph!). Next years goal is to make it there and all the way back two days later (I only managed about 70km on the Sunday - my legs weren't in it!).

If you find a few bikes you're interested in throw them up here and we can give you advice. I've a Scott Speedster Contessa model (it's pink) and it was €800 including shoes, pedals and cleats. I'm a disaster though, I've probably spent nearly the same again on accessories!!!

If you're using it around town, invest in a good quality lock - a U-bend with a cable.

  • Administrators Posts: 55,122 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

IMO don't use the bike as one for getting around town. It's too expensive to be just locking it to lamposts and stuff.

If you're looking a bike for getting about get a really cheap second hand one and keep your racer for exercise.

Go for it. Flat enough route and a nice part of the world to cycle in!

How long would it take to get to a point where I could manage 60km, starting from scratch? My fitness level would have to be described as fairly poor at the moment.

Probably about 6 weeks depending on your starting point, and if you're not worrying about times / pace.
