    A brick of a Motorola in 1998.

    Features:

    - Non rechargeable. Had to use four AA batteries
    - No caller ID. Just said "Call", same for missed call
    - No text messages
    - No games
    - Big aerial that you really needed

How good will phones be in 2038?

Think I had the same one. Was it with Esat Digifone with digifone written on the flip down answer thing?

A Mitsubishi MT7. Bought it in London, early to mid 90's.

Mine was an Ericson t28 which was a seriously cool phone at the time. Everyone else at the time had Nokia but for some reason our company bought a crate load of the Ericsons.

It came with its own special holster to clip on to your belt and the flip sprung open at the press of the button. Very James Bond.

Still have it and its charger in a draw. Must see I it will still work.

My first phone was a Motorola and was like a brick. You couldn't text, take photos, no Internet, didn't even have voicemail. All you could do with it was make and receive calls and assault someone

That's all you need in a phone as far as I'm concerned.

I resisted them till 2001. I got some sort of Motorola thing on Pay as you Go.

Stood on it one hungover morning a few years later.

I bought second-hand ones from mates ever since.

I had an Ericsson GA628 (had to google the exact name of it), with a blue face plate. Pay as you go but don't ever remember topping it up.

A friend of mine has never had a mobile phone. He has no land line either.

I literally have to call in for him like the way I did as a kid. He's 37 and a paranoid bastard!

    I think it's brilliant :)

Not quite as 'impressive' as some others here. Siemens A55 for my 12th birthday in 2003. Still have the same 087 number.

Myself and gf were saying recently how we both miss flip phones. Felt like a boss snapping it closed after a call.

I don't know anyone between 15 and 50 who doesn't have a mobile phone, fair play to your friend

Was given a Siemens C25 by work for a couple of months as I was on call for Y2K. First phone I bought myself was a Nokia 3210.

Big 088 Mitsubishi phone about the same size as a pajero!

It had a removable battery pack, it took 6 AA batteries if the battery pack was needing a charge (which took ages).

    Bought the thing second-hand in 1995! :)

A Siemens C25 that was stolen in my jacket from Rashers.

Apart from the rubbish 1980s bricks which I had for work, my first "own" proper mobile was an Ericsson T28s - and I still have it here long unused but kept -on my desk. I loved that little phone. To me, it was the first proper mobile.

I started with some sort of Siemens brick in 1997 - got it free with my car insurance! It was connected to Eircell.....still have the same number!

Ditto! Customers demanded from my boss he'd get me a phone. I remember I wasn't too keen on having one. I programmed my own ring tone in it. Tubular Bells (Mike Oldfield) theme music from the Exorcist

First private phone was 2 years later, in 2001. A Nokia 8210. Still have it, and it still works perfectly. On the original 14 year old battery. I've the blue one and bought the wife the red one

3310. Felt so cool, I'd say there wasn't more than 10 calls made on it though :p

Then I had one with the lights on the side and you could put a picture/photo in the cover. Then I got the hot pink razor phone. God I was cool.

I love the freedom when I leave my mobile phone at home and go for a walk/drive

I think the phone I had in college in England was my first one in late 98 / early 99 - a Siemens C10 it got incredibly hot on long phone calls.
my first phone in Ireland is the number I still have today - it was one of them Motorola bricks that were popular on Eircell with the pully-up aerial, which I think I got for Christmas 99.

Ericsson GA 628. Man that was a lump of a Phone!

Panasonic G520 back in 1998.. Went on to another Panasonic after that and then various Nokias.. The best being the 6310i and N95 v2

Only had one Sony Ericsson and it was useless so never had one again since.

First smart/touch phone was a Nokia 5800, then 2 HTC's and the Galaxy S2.. Been through all the Galaxy Notes and a few Lumias since then as well. Same mobile number since the very start and amazingly I've never lost or broken a phone despite many drops over the years.

First mobile was a Siemens M35 (saved up for half and the parents paid the balance). That was a brilliant phone! Had a soft touch rubber back which would not slip off any surface. Got a lithium ion battery for it when they were new tech and it used to last almost 2 weeks with a lot of usage between charges. There was a maze game that me and a good friend of mine used to race each other at, lots of fun at the time.

2nd phone was Siemens C45 which was crap in comparison. Really flimsy design. The buttons felt terrible and the phone just felt cheap.

3rd phone was a Nokia 3310 which was my brothers. He had a bad car crash in which the phone was submerged in muck and the case had cracked open from the impact. He said I could have it (assuming it was beyond repair). Sure enough, once it had dried I charged it up and it still worked perfectly. Got a new case for it and that was mine for 3 more years :-) what a phone!

After that phones were pretty bland (mostly Nokia's) until I got my first android (HTC wildfire S) and stayed with android except for one brief encounter with iPhone.

It is almost like some people have a personal relationship with their phone

Like quite a few others on here, it was the 3210. Many hours spent playing Snake on it. I have Snake on my current smartphone, but it just doesn't feel the same.

My dad gave myself and my two sisters a Nokia 3210 to share. Lots of arguing over it.

I bought my first phone, a Nokia 3310, from my confirmation money. Left the church and went to buy it. I got a free Westlife CD when I bought it!

A humble Nokia 3310, simplicity at its best.
