People who know what you meant but feel superior by correcting you for a typo ;)

Yes, nasty grammar Nazis:(. Whether it's a typo or not, they don't consider the poster mightn't be the best at spelling. They are just trying to get a dig in thinking it makes them look big. It's so mean.

    What do you mean?

Posters who 'believe' in x,y,z and consequently cannot be wrong and anyone who does not 'believe' is by extension wrong. Regardless of any valid counter argument.

Posters arguing from ignorance about fairly basic things that might be new to Ireland, but are old hat in other parts of the world. Example: discussing LGBT marriage as if it's never been done before, anywhere, as if the onus is on you to safeguard the morals of the world. Sweden legalised it in 2009, and no, it didn't crash their society in to the buffers.

Legalising drugs? Portugal's already had that discussion and legalised everything, while the USA is wrestling with issues of State vs Federal law. Church / State separation? Compare France vs Germany: France is much more aggressive in enforcing it, while Germany still has a default "church tax" unless you opt out of it.

Immigration? Don't get me started: in Ireland until recently, "person of colour" meant "ginger". Ireland hasn't experienced anything remotely resembling the immigration rates of the UK, France or Germany. Ireland doesn't actually have "race relations" as a "thing" at all.

In short: a general failure to realise that Ireland is usually far behind the rest of the world when it comes to matters of social progress, and that you could short-circuit so many of these arguments with a few well-placed Google searches about experiences in other countries.

Government resting upon the will and universal suffrage of the people has no anchorage except in the people's intelligence.

Grammar nazis are the biggest enemies of grammar there is. Do they really think they're helping people improve their grammar by trying to make them feel stupid?

People who get into a back n forth with one poster and are still there, still arguing on the same thread with that poster 3 or 4 days later. Go outside.

The type who treat every debate as if they're defending their favourite football team, tending towards tribalism.

The 'I have no counterargument, but I'll reply to something vaguely similar, to make it look like a rebuttal' type - i.e. constant straw-men.

The type who will say they are above 'wasting their time' replying, yet never miss an opportunity to take a condescending jab whenever you post thereafter.

Posters who cannot debate a topic, without becoming increasingly condescending just for the sake of it - often the condescending jabs become the primary reason for posting (with superficial 'arguments' supplied, to avoid mod attention).

The type who, when you criticize them for frequent use of a particular fallacy, dishonest tactic, or style of posting, just reflexively accuse you of the same thing with no evidence, as a distraction.

Posters who try to reduce every topic, to being just a matter of opinion - dismissing common/well-known/accepted principles (often as 'theory'), in order to do this.

    • Incessant multi-quoters. Using it to wear down posters with genuine arguments.
    • Posters who start a thread and then ask for it to be closed, because it hasn't went the way that they wanted.
    • Posters providing a link that doesn't prove their point.
    • Throwing out accusations of bigotry/racism/xenophobia/homophobia with zero proof.
    • Posters who insist others answer their questions but ignore all questions put to them.
    • Dismissing evidence because someone doesn't like the source, even when the exact same information is reported on other sites.

    The 'serial stupid thread starter'.

Not you OP, but AH has 3 or 4 of them who seem to start 90% of the threads on here.

People who don't acknowledge the holes you've pointed out in their arguments, but instead repeat their original point in different words and try to present it as a retort to your argument.

EDIT: To add, posters that hammer in jokes from Father Ted, no matter how repetitive or over done they are

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,020 ✭✭✭BlaasForRafa

people who reply by answering each sentence individually in a multi-quote frenzy that takes up a whole fricken page.

And conversely people whose only reply is "Lol"

Exactly. One such poster is you know who.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 803 ✭✭✭jungleman

Posters who state something and justify it with "well that's my opinion" as if that makes it infallible.

Just because it's your opinion doesn't make it correct. "The world is flat" may be someone's opinion, but it's a stupid opinion. And a wrong opinion.

Saying "well that's my opinion" does not change that.

    Oh sweet Jesus...

This thread invites people to provide examples of stereotypical posters. ANY KIND OF POSTER. So, I provided one kind. Therefore I operated within the parameters of the thread topic.

Now, try to keep up here...

In the fictional New Horizons thread I proposed, people are invited to discuss that NASA mission. NO ONE is invited to discuss Irish Water, which is why it is wrong to bring that topic up in such a thread.

Can you tell the difference now? Do you need diagrams?

Do you understand irony? You post in a thread that posters post about Irish Water in a thread which has nothing to do with Irish Water? And where do you post this? In a thread which has nothing to do with Irish Water

What's worse are the gobshites that admonish somebody for their spelling, then fuck it up themselves a few posts later...

...and STILL don't learn that being a grammar nazi is simply being a twat.

The posters who drop unsubtle 'hints', implying they have a massive salary, lavish lifestyle etc.

We all know they haven't a pot to piss in and still live with their ma!

Saw an example of this just yesterday. Well it wasn't even a few posts later - it was the actual post in which they were admonishing another poster for their writing. LITTERED with mistakes.

In my experience, the most peculiar and distinctive characteristic of grammar nazis is the lack of any other manifest sign of intelligence.

Their only claim to intellectual dexterity is a skill that can be replaced by a spell-checker or purchased via a second-hand dictionary. I'd rather be dyslexic than to live so redundantly.

People who start a thread asking for information and get it, but don't thank the person who helped them, or even reply to the thread, should be hanged.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 850 ✭✭✭Hans Bricks

Pure victim complex posters who are anti government, anti wealthy, successful, anti police, blame every woe of the middle east on western past discretions, side with every minority group and professional protester no matter how absurd the excuse or reason. Usually hates top gear and just complains about what they think is the status quo in general. Cultural cringe coupled with going against the grain or majority just for the sake of it. Man children who will probably never attract a woman or raise a family.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,207 ✭✭✭The King of Moo

People who generalise about people who disagree with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,565 ✭✭✭✭steddyeddy

Fishing exercises. They drive me round the bend.

You make some banal statement, stating fact you happen to know and they respond with pithy questions. So you explain.

They ask for proof. Then you have to go off and track-down some obscure .pdf file in the internet's undergrowth to satisfy their curiosity.

You present them with proof, all goes silent, and then ... they come at you again with a totally different set of questions and hissing new things they want you to prove. All the while, they contribute nothing.

When I'm King, I'll have these wastrels rounded up and put in the workhouse where they will be forced to sweep the sunshine off the roads with toothbrushes.

This is exactly my experience with some posters. I say something, they respond with three or four questions and when I answer or ask them a question they are unable to answer.

The propagandist soapboxing types are annoying. They post about only one or two topics and contribute to little else on the site, even at times trying to twist unrelated threads to speak about their favourite topics.

Also those arguments you see between two posters that will go one for pages and pages where they back and forth with massive walls of text. It always kills a thread because no one else can be bothered reading it all and participating.

I'd say about half of this thread is made up of not so thinly veiled references.

Whatever the boards equivalent of subtweeting is.

One of the commonest issues here is of people ridiculing the expression 'PC brigade', despite the fact that there is a group (brigade if you will) of people who will always be the first to reject uncomfortable truths in specific areas, e.g. immigration, asylum, the church and abortion.

When you see a thread on any of these topics it's easy to predict who's participating with the same stock responses.
