Saw this pop up on my Facebook. Joe.ie seems convinced that this man is innocent and should be brought home. I've asked them for the full book of evidence from the case, as they've obviously seen it to be so sure of this mans innocence, but they haven't gotten back to me with it yet.

Mad the amount of "innocent" Irish people getting arrested for things they didn't do / did under duress / just got caught up in. And yet some people still lap it up and take each story at face value.

I understand Joe is a clickbait website, but I've seen people jump on hand bandwagon because of it. There's an online petition to get this lad released and everything now ðŸ˜‚

Nevertheless.

1) it's odd to see a guy of 55 with no history as a pusher.
2) he seems to have had small amounts of marijuana on him. 2 joints.
3) 12 years is clearly excessive if 2) is true.

No, it's ridiculous.

But like abortion in Ireland, drinking alcohol in many Muslim countries, I respect the right of a country to set its own laws, even if they sound crazy.

However, I have come across this bloke's story before.
Allegedly he was fitted up for not greasing the right palms after his wife inherited a few bob.
Regardless, 12 years for a couple of joints is nuts.

Possession of drugs in East Asia is pretty much a death sentence, regardless of the amount.

I'm not in favour of those laws at all but if you go there, you need to know what the deal is. If I go to places like Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan or the Philipines, I'm going to be smart and lay off the drugs for a bit. It's just common sense.

This is assuming he did have them. I'm inclined to believe the corruption story because even if he was a user he would know the country well enough ( his wife being Filipino) to not pack them.

Exactly, it's not like it isn't well known that these countries come down like a ton of bricks on any drug use. I'd say he forgot he had them. Unlucky, but not my problem

Why are you up in arms about joe.ie trying to bring attention to him?

I know nothing about it til I saw this thread, fair play to joe.ie for trying to help him out though.

I don't mind any website bringing attention to him. It's the nonsense headline below I have issue with, hence the thread title. He's Irish so he was obviously innocent. He was caught, he was arrested, he was tried, he was found guilty, he was sentenced.

The evidence I have is the link you posted. Since a frequent flyer to the Philippines is unlikely to not know these laws, and given the other facts I'm inclined to believe his innocence.

He was caught in possession and he didn't grease the right palms. Having been in a similar position with a friend of mine it's a hoirible spot.

Mate got grabbed in Thailand with a cigarette, which magically changed into a joint, he was afraid to pay the "fine" incase they stitched him for bribery. I just paid them the fine while recording the conversation with my phone in my pocket. Looking back iit could have been a whole lot worse.

Don't know the merits of this case but I've seen weed readily available in a lot of Asian countries and local cops do very little to shut down these guys. Haven't been to the Phillipines yet so can't comment on there but Id be inclined to believe this guy and 12 years is crazy for 2 joints.

I'm not a fan of violent sports, so my only experience of McGregor has been those god awful ads he's been doing for some shite mobile game.

Given that corruption is pretty rife in the Philipines I would say this guy was set up.
