    http://www.joe.ie/news/video-this-irishman-has-been-wrongly-sentenced-to-12-years-in-a-philippines-jail/504548

Saw this pop up on my Facebook. Joe.ie seems convinced that this man is innocent and should be brought home. I've asked them for the full book of evidence from the case, as they've obviously seen it to be so sure of this mans innocence, but they haven't gotten back to me with it yet.

Mad the amount of "innocent" Irish people getting arrested for things they didn't do / did under duress / just got caught up in. And yet some people still lap it up and take each story at face value.

What is it with sites like Joe.ie (and The Journal) always starting headlines with the word 'This'?

Does anyone actually see Joe.ie as a legitimate and serious news source?

    Joe.ie is dire.

I understand Joe is a clickbait website, but I've seen people jump on hand bandwagon because of it. There's an online petition to get this lad released and everything now 😂

    Nevertheless.

    1) it's odd to see a guy of 55 with no history as a pusher.
    2) he seems to have had small amounts of marijuana on him. 2 joints.
    3) 12 years is clearly excessive if 2) is true.

    I believe Joe.ie. Thanks op

The Irish government should try help.

Everybody here in favour of 12 years for 2 joints, yeah?

    No, it's ridiculous.

But like abortion in Ireland, drinking alcohol in many Muslim countries, I respect the right of a country to set its own laws, even if they sound crazy.

    Joi.ie = pretty crap site.

However, I have come across this bloke's story before.
Allegedly he was fitted up for not greasing the right palms after his wife inherited a few bob.
Regardless, 12 years for a couple of joints is nuts.

Possession of drugs in East Asia is pretty much a death sentence, regardless of the amount.

I'm not in favour of those laws at all but if you go there, you need to know what the deal is. If I go to places like Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan or the Philipines, I'm going to be smart and lay off the drugs for a bit. It's just common sense.

This is assuming he did have them. I'm inclined to believe the corruption story because even if he was a user he would know the country well enough ( his wife being Filipino) to not pack them.

Exactly, it's not like it isn't well known that these countries come down like a ton of bricks on any drug use. I'd say he forgot he had them. Unlucky, but not my problem

Why are you up in arms about joe.ie trying to bring attention to him?

If you don't care you don't care, grand.

I know nothing about it til I saw this thread, fair play to joe.ie for trying to help him out though.

I don't mind any website bringing attention to him. It's the nonsense headline below I have issue with, hence the thread title. He's Irish so he was obviously innocent. He was caught, he was arrested, he was tried, he was found guilty, he was sentenced.

THIS IRISHMAN HAS BEEN WRONGLY SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS IN A PHILIPPINES JAIL

Maybe he was setting up a drug empire, and smuggling 2 joints out at a time. I don't have an iota of evidence but it's a possibility.

That is a pretty sh1t business model.

The evidence I have is the link you posted. Since a frequent flyer to the Philippines is unlikely to not know these laws, and given the other facts I'm inclined to believe his innocence.

Thanks op. Will sign the page now.

I hate Joe.ie, Balls.ie, The Journal and other click bait bollocks. Joe has been so far up Conor Mcgregors arse lately I'm amazed he can still breathe.

He was caught in possession and he didn't grease the right palms. Having been in a similar position with a friend of mine it's a hoirible spot.

Mate got grabbed in Thailand with a cigarette, which magically changed into a joint, he was afraid to pay the "fine" incase they stitched him for bribery. I just paid them the fine while recording the conversation with my phone in my pocket. Looking back iit could have been a whole lot worse.

Don't know the merits of this case but I've seen weed readily available in a lot of Asian countries and local cops do very little to shut down these guys. Haven't been to the Phillipines yet so can't comment on there but Id be inclined to believe this guy and 12 years is crazy for 2 joints.

I'm not a fan of violent sports, so my only experience of McGregor has been those god awful ads he's been doing for some shite mobile game.

Joe.ie summed up its self serving nature with the Berkley tragedy, uploaded a candle photo with a message and stuck there ****in logo in the corner. Classy crew

Given that corruption is pretty rife in the Philipines I would say this guy was set up.

Really? So for instance, you're all for supporting the stoning to death of women in Iran and Somalia for the crime of being raped. That sort of thing is grand and to be respected is it?

Well, I'm not. I tend to stay the fcuk away from countries who's laws are in the stone age.

That is a bit of a blanket statement that you may need to review.
Do you respect laws that allow men marry children, laws that allow men rape women, laws that allow the subjugation of women. These are not punishments, they are laws.

Show me any law that allows men to rape women.

There may be a lack of a law prohibiting it, but that's a completely different thing.

That is true and that is what I was referring to particularly marital rape.

I'd imagine the palms could still be greased, it would just take a lot more oil to do it. These drug laws seem to exist primarily to facilitate extortion.

That's meaningless. A law without punishment isn't a law. If you respect the law you respect the punishment the law imposes.

A lack of a law prohibiting rape is the same as a law allowing rape.

Interesting to note that some Irish people don't believe in the rule of law.

The rule of law in 1938 nazi Germany forced Jews to wear stars, not run businesses and not be employed by the state. The rule of law in Saudi Arabia today forces women into a hijab and prohibits them from driving, the rule of law forced Alan Turing to commit sucicide.

What matters is whether the rule of law is moral or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 220 ✭✭JonEBGud

The gas part about this is that the Philipines
are one of the american army bases and after the
hurricane last year the Irish were more concerned
    than the yanks were.
If it was an American would it be as severe?

So you think drugs should be legal?? Or are you picking nonsense laws that have no basis in what we are talking to.
