Not a fan but that was a brilliant video.
*feels strange urge to learn ballet :p

There's a 30 minute short film called Runaway which that video us taken from. He directed it himself, it's visually stunning.

He's an obnoxious cunt. You simply do not cover a Queen song and then call yourself the greatest living rock star. The man doesn't have the musical chops to tune Brian May's guitar, never mind to insinuate he's in the same class as Freddie Mercury was.

He's one of those celebrities that make me despair of the modern world, up there with Jordan, Peter André, his wife's family as being famous for being to sucker money out of morons through manipulation of the press. The current population of the world is more educated than it's ever been at any other point in history and we decide to make these fuckwits rich? It's baffling and depressing in equal parts.
does playing a song on a cd count as a cover now??

He is incredibly unlikeable, and a very mediocre rapper.

But he's definitely one of my top 3 producers ever. Genius, and a d1ck.

Kanye is without doubt one of musics biggest assholes, if not one of the worlds biggest assholes. But the man can put a tune together - anyone who says he can't is just talking through their arse.

That said - he was dreadful at Glastonbury, one of the worse shows I've ever seen in fact. Thankfully it was only on the telly, if I'd paid money for that shít , I'd have been very disappointed.
I saw him play with jay z on the watch the throne tour in the O2 - it was an amazing show and is an amazing album. It's a pity he's such a plonker really!

You're dead on here in a few ways! He's not a great rapper or live performer but so many of his tunes are absolutely perfect for a crowd to sing along to, instead he kept cutting ones short and absolutely killing any kind of momentum. His set was farrrrr too minimal and it left him very exposed, with a few better guests, some dancers and the biggest crowd pleasers to the forefront, he could've easily won people over but his current musical direction (loved Yeezus but it's very minimal compared to MBDTF) seems to be bleeding into his live shows a bit too much and it's leaving him very exposed.

As far as comparisons to Queen go, if you're honestly judging acts on how good they can play an instrument or sing still, stick with Yngwie Malmsteem and Mariah Carey*
Plus, by performing in Sun City in the mid 80s, refusing to show any regret for it and going so far as to claim they done it to bring their music to black south africans and unite the nation with their music, they achieved levels of ****tiness that Kanye hasn't come remotely close to.

*well, I actually think Mariah Carey is great sometimes, but you get the point

Kanye strikes me as the kind of celebrity that would sue his PA for "emotional distress" because he was given the wrong coffee.

He's from a middle class background, raised by his mother a university professor. His doctorate is honorary.

He's obviously influential and successful - that's the point of the thread. The question is why?

I can't comment on his rapping skills as that's not something I have much interest in but he comes across as obnoxious and entirely devoid of class. I've often thought the same OP - why do other successful people indulge his bullsh!t? He's certainly a master at marketing himself to the masses though.

Because people have an amazing habit of separating the person with their abilities. Roman Polanski is a wanted paedophile, and yet he's produced some incredible work. Same with countless other people who, by all accounts, were assholes and yet still well respected.

You don't need to respect the person to like what they do.

However you feel about him, one of the best things is his obvious contempt for his wife's show - he refuses to appear on it and won't let their child.

what happens with celebrities like kanye and kim K. is that they are so used to worldwide fame, adoration and attention that they lose touch with reality. they live such a sheltered, privileged life that they often don't know what it is to truly struggle like the ordinary joe soap. get a job, lose a job, pay mountains of bills and taxes that you cant afford or keep track of, struggle on social welfare, lose your house, live on the streets. they're so high on this pedestal away from us mere peasants and our issues they they develop almost a god complex. us irish are a humble bunch I think, we all deal with the problems I listed above, and we don't have a celebrity culture in the same way America do with Hollywood, so we often view these people with begrudgery and disdain. ''what have those aul gob****es got to complain about?'' any problems they have are instantly dismissed as the first world variety. the likes of kanye have a whole fanbase of people telling him he's great, and so he will begin to believe so. the awards and the raving reviews of his albums also enlarge that head of his.

I think why other famous people indulge kanye is that they are used to being indulged themselves, its a culture of indulgence and circlejerkery among celebrities.

    Controversial

Relatively speaking, compared to rappers of the the last 20 years? Mediocre, at very best. The last ten years? Probably above that, which is a shame (because rap has been so dire for the last ten years.)

I've always been a big fan of Kanye, and not for his public persona. I really detest how he acts in public. And his wife, I detest everything she stands for (is there anything she stands for other than fame? Correct me if I'm wrong please).

But Kanye has a gift of making a tune that will be a hit no matter who raps/sings on it. Like 50 cents 'in da club', that kind of talent. If my dead granny rapped on that it would be a hit.

Glastonbury concert was shocking. Kind of guy that if I hear a song 'featuring Kanye' I pay very little heed but if I hear a song 'produced by Kanye' I'm all ears. Producer, through and through.

Saying that he combines both well on occasion, examples below.

I like him, he's quirky and off centre, not your typical vanilla 21st century celeb.

I am missing something in that I don't really know who Kane West is? I see people posting memes of him on Facebook from time to time.

There is not one universal measure of intelligence, nor one universal measure of musical acumen. He is not be able to sing, he probably can't play a musical instrument beyond a basic level but never the less Kanye West is a musical genius. His albums have been consistently innovative and influential in production technique and lyrical content.

He started out innovating with sped-up vocal samples from soul records as his signature sound and was pretty soon copied over and over by probably hundreds of commercially successful artists. He went to incorporate string instruments, synthesizers, auto-tune, prog-rock & industrial. Simply put he does what no one else in hip hop even considers and where he leads everyone follows.

He also raps about about a very broad range of subjects from politics/economics to paranoia, depression and celebrity culture and it effects on society. Very few other rap artist go beyond one or two core subjects that they're comfortable with, Kanye West seems to have something to say about everything. Sometimes he's insightful and at other times delusional.

I think he may be a bit of a schizophrenic, he seems caught in a web of self delusion (I'm bigger than Jesus), insecurity (always seeking attention and approval) and impulsive aberrant behaviour (stage invasions) with bouts of mania (ranting incoherently).

Due to his many personality flaws he is perceived by many to be a fool and not very likeable. IMO he is the quintessential mad genius, misunderstood by many but undoubtedly gifted.

I wonder how many people hate him but simultaneously love Conor McGregor.

Kanye West is a genius, probably holds a conversation very well and nobody can deny he has an interesting personality. And you wonder why people interact with him?

Every single one of his albums has had massive critical acclaim and commercial success. From NME to Rolling Stone to Pitchfork to musicians, producers, rappers, soul musicians and beyond it's broadly accepted that he is the most influential person in modern music, by a long way.

Two of his albums are in NME's "best albums of the decade so far". My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy has a metacritic score of 94.
The 30 minute short film "runaway" which was released alongside the album which he directed himself also got universal critical acclaim.

He writes, produces, mixes and executive produces all of his own music and on top of that has been the driving creative force behind some of the most important hiphop acts of the last 20 years producing for people like Common, Talib Kweli, Alicia Keys, Jay Z and more.

He is one of handful of producers alongside the likes of Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Rick Reuben, J Dilla and The RZA and Dr. Dre who have shaped Hiphop.

He has changed the soundscape of not just hiphop, but popular music as a whole, several times in his career and he's only been around about 15 years.
You sound like you're over-compensating, the way you're making that list of his achievements so long! You can make it as long as you want; yet the everyday person will still think he's just some lucky rich idiot with a small amount of talent, who was in the right place at the right time.

No, a lot of rich and famous had to initially struggle and work hard to get to where they're at. And therefore they never forget about that. They're not all silver spoons.

If fact most successful/intelligent people are able to see life from both perspectives, and are smart enough to account for the fact that their lives are quite different to ordinary people.

And Ireland, as a country, has had one of the highest stardards of living with a long while now.

Why didn't you just say TL;DR? Because JALS just listed some very good reasons why Kanye West is anything but that. I'm not too fond of him as a person, but he is very, very talented and (musically) intelligent.
