Like I said, I'm not making any comment on his talent as a musician.

There are plenty of critically acclaimed musicians who never achieve such levels of notoriety. That's marketing.

Nobody said he needs to be nice, but his crass behaviour exceeds that of most of his fellow celebs and makes the fawning over him seem even more strange.

And there are other obnoxious types who have had the critics falling at their feet, like Van Morrison, and it doesn't seem to bother people nor is it written off as some marketing stunt.

Artists think he's very talented. As do critics. He's not for me but that's because I don't like the genre, I certainly don't expect that others should agree with my taste and cease admiring his ability.

He's a pretty temperamental dude who's very bad at expressing himself. It's a shame that he seems to care so much about such stupid things that surely absolutely no one holds any weight to at this stage (e.g. the grammys) but I far rather someone who's so passionate about what he does that he comes across as a bit of a jackass than some pleasant pile of boredom. It's not exactly like his work somehow depends on him being a likeable character either, a spectacular amount of great artists through history were thundering c*nts to the levels where he'd only be a blip on the c*ntometre.

Damn near everyone who has worked with him has both benefited from the collaboration and had nothing but good things to say about the dude too.

Besides, you don't have to follow his every move if you don't want to. The fact he continues to get more and more attention in the media seems to imply he brings the readers in in droves so they can bitch and moan about how talentless he is (with either no clue what it is that he does or a remarkably snobbish dismissal of huge area of music with a tone of authority), how much they wish he was dead, etc. In this day and age, the fault is as much on your inability to filter your media as it is on anything else.

You can do and say what you want, but as an unwritten rule, you DON'T ever say you're the best(even if you think it) OR interrupt someone else's 10 seconds of fame. I'm guessing Van Morrison played by those rules.

Not sure about those rules, never heard of them myself. Did Elvis call himself the King? Pretty sure James Brown gave himself the Godfather of Soul nickname. In sports Ali certainly said he was the greatest. I remember Jarvis Cocker interrupting Michael Jackson on stage at the Brits, and Jarvis is by all accounts just about the nicest guy in music.

That's why they're unwritten. I'm giving you wisdom.
Did Elvis call himself the King?
That's my point exactly. I always assumed that other people gave him that name. As an artist you lake a clear perspective of yourself, and that's why you let the people assess how good you are. That is why anyone who says they're the best sounds, not only arrogant, but more importantly - naive!
In sports Ali certainly said he was the greatest.
That's different. With sports Conor, it's very much a black or white issue. Too much emotions come into play for art. I've a different favorite song depending on my mood.

Don't know anything about that, but I'm guessing it was a once off.

    Could you show me a c*ntometre? :D

Is it coz I is Irish, but I'd say the main reason I don't warm to him is because he obviously had a SOHotomy.

For most of his songs I remember the original samples long after I've forgotten his effort or auto tuned additions. A decent producer but there's far better rappers, and he has learned to take annoying to a whole new level, so I guess that's something.

Kanye West has a Doctorate in fashion, designed shoes for Nike that sold out instantly, has won 21 Grammy, sold 21 million albums, was named TIME magazine's most influential person and is not only one of the greatest rappers since the turn of the millennium but of all time.
He came from the gang filled suburbs of Chicago and is respected by artists worldwide for both his great music and intelligence.

And yet he still acts like a 10 year old.

Taught. MOG, it's fcuking taught. Though I wonder who cares. Kanye probably doesn't.
Ironic... because usually the type of people who'd be inclined to use MOG as an insult, wouldn't really care about spellings!!

The reason other celebrities indulge him is because he is a musical genius. You might not like him or his music but there is no denying it's quality or his talent. He's won 21 grammies and every album has received widespread critical acclaim. Musicians from every genre have praised him for his work, and even worked with him in some cases, Paul Mc Cartney, Lou Reed, Jack White, Noel Gallagher, Iggy Pop have all expressed their admiration for his work.

I don't think he's as much of an arse as he often seems, I enjoyed this interview.

He has always just seemed to be an adult sized baby, gets pissy at anything that doesn't go his way and has a reputation for being a bit OTT in that regard. He holds that musical respect from writing his own lyrics while sampling other people's songs. His genius comes from masterminding his wife's rise in popularity with the whole sex tape thing (famous for associating with famous, eh?).

I wonder if he's still angry about the whole gay fish episode...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,785 ✭✭✭The Golden Miller

I reckon him and Liam Gallagher should be put in a room together. Two arrogant clowns who don't like each other. Should be a good watch.

I wonder would he interupt an award speech of sid vicious if he still knocked about or someone of his ilk? He's an absolute coward

    You are all haters!!!

Just picking on him cause he is a recovering gay fish that is married to a hobbit!!

without sounding like a tinfoil hat salesman, kanye west and most famous figures are told what to do by a group of people, in order to bring in more money for him and everyone he's involved with. sort of "any publicity is good publicity". saying he's an idiot is exactly what they want you to say, and other respected famous people give him the time of day simply because CASH

Nonsense. It's far from an act.

He's an obnoxious cunt. You simply do not cover a Queen song and then call yourself the greatest living rock star. The man doesn't have the musical chops to tune Brian May's guitar, never mind to insinuate he's in the same class as Freddie Mercury was.

He's one of those celebrities that make me despair of the modern world, up there with Jordan, Peter André, his wife's family as being famous for being to sucker money out of morons through manipulation of the press. The current population of the world is more educated than it's ever been at any other point in history and we decide to make these fuckwits rich? It's baffling and depressing in equal parts.

Every single one of his albums has had massive critical acclaim and commercial success. From NME to Rolling Stone to Pitchfork to musicians, producers, rappers, soul musicians and beyond it's broadly accepted that he is the most influential person in modern music, by a long way.

Two of his albums are in NME's "best albums of the decade so far". My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy has a metacritic score of 94.
The 30 minute short film "runaway" which was released alongside the album which he directed himself also got universal critical acclaim.

He writes, produces, mixes and executive produces all of his own music and on top of that has been the driving creative force behind some of the most important hiphop acts of the last 20 years producing for people like Common, Talib Kweli, Alicia Keys, Jay Z and more.

He is one of handful of producers alongside the likes of Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Rick Reuben, J Dilla and The RZA and Dr. Dre who have shaped Hiphop.

He has changed the soundscape of not just hiphop, but popular music as a whole, several times in his career and he's only been around about 15 years.

But sure why would anyone pay any attention to him?

Because he's one of the greatest artists in the world. Mind of a child? Would a child be able to cover such deep themes as economic materialism and insecurity of society, particularly the black community, its historic mistrust of the US government and police and validity of non career orientated education in a 4 minute hip hop track?

And how many musicians have the self awareness to make tracks like this?

"I have this table in my new house. They put this table in without asking. It was some weird nouveau riche marble table, and I hated it...
We would try to set up different things around it, but it never really worked

I realised that table was my ego. No matter what you put around it, under it, no matter who photographed it, the douchebaggery would always come through."

Taylor Swift has at least 20 pounds on Sid Vicious, fear would have nothing to do with it.

Kanye is the GOAT rapper and other talented musicians recognise his status

Sorry man but any reference to the term "the GOAT" refers to Ricky Charmichel. Get Kanye some other status defining term.
Before I knew of him I though Kanye West sounded like a white, pretty, blonde country western singer's name. For a long time I thought he was tailor swifts rival......

I like his music, it's fresh and innovative and unique and can be thought-provoking.

But let's be honest here, he's a rap artist. He's not changing the world or reinventing the wheel or provoking massive social change or curing cancer or anything, he's standing in a multi-million dollar recording studio with some of the best producers in the world and churning out pop music.

And fair play to him, he does it well. But he also thinks compares himself to Jesus Christ, has regular fly-off-the-handle temper tantrums including lashing out at other fellow artists and he married the stunningly vacuous Kim Kardashian, who is probably the only other person on this planet with an ego matching his own.
