Why do other famous people indulge Kanye West?

I spotted his character flaw(s) from the get-go. It's only now though that other people are finally catching onto it... and I'm like duh! The only time I've ever seemed to hear about him was when he threw a tantrum, or stormed somebody on stage.

The main thing I don't get though, is that other famous and successful people seem to give him respect. Elton John once said "I have tremendous for" him. Obama made reference to the fact that he likes his music. Paul McCartney(the richest musician on the planet) also indulged him by doing a song with him. It's this (without referring to his incident over the weekend) that is the main thing I can't understand. If I was somebody that worked hard to get to where I am in life, I definitely wouldn't give some loud-mouth with the mind of a child, the chance to put themselves in the same league! He now has co called "business proposition" for Pete Townshend, who also seems to be taking him seriously.

Another thing is that anyone who's been stormed by Kanye during an award, never seems to see it coming. Both Taylor Swift and Beck were both "happy to see Kanye on stage" before getting disrespected. I mean Jesus, what did you think he was coming up on stage for? Hasn't history taught them anything???!! It may happen again, and people will somehow be surprised.

If it was someone else behaving like this, you might think that they'd be taking the approach of 'any publicity is good publicity', but I genuinely don't think there's a hidden agenda. He seems just plain stupid. I know he can get away with it to some extent, because the very ones who aren't smart enough to realise it, are the very people who are his fans. Wouldn't you expect him to be banned from the grammy's at this. Are artists sitting in fear, thinking that if they win the grammys, that they'll also have to pass the Kanye test? You'd think they'd be some rule to ban him from the grammy's

To think that he's compared himself to Jesus, Bill Gates and Shakespeare!! The man can't sing, or play an instrument, yet he's able to fool himself into thinking that he writes his own songs. Is he even a good lyricist? I'll admit that I struggle to take rap seriously, but are his lyrics good. Are they even good for rap?

As with all things it comes down to power, influence and cash. Kanye, inexplicably has a lot of all three. Business leaders, politicians and other musicians obviously want to hitch a ride on that hype wagon because they believe some the magic will rub off on them, either leading to bigger profit margins, more fans, more votes, etc etc.

As for how good he is, I can't say cos rap isnt my bag. But I watched a bit of Glastonbury the other night and I couldnt really understand what so many people get out of watching such a deluded prat shout rhyming swearwords.

Not that memorable. Some of his plaques still say Kayne!

Didnt he call his son "North"? It takes a special kind of moron to do that when your surname is West.

I don't like his stuff, but in fairness he has had 3 or 4 albums that have received massive critical acclaim and are considered seminal works in hip hop.

Now that he's ruined Bohemian Rhapsody, he moves on to conquer the rest of what's left of the music industry -

Kanye West has a Doctorate in fashion, designed shoes for Nike that sold out instantly, has won 21 Grammy, sold 21 million albums, was named TIME magazine's most influential person and is not only one of the greatest rappers since the turn of the millennium but of all time.
He came from the gang filled suburbs of Chicago and is respected by artists worldwide for both his great music and intelligence.

Ah, now, a bit of false modesty surely.

Yeah but it's not like Elton John or Paul McCarthney are climbing the ladder of fame any more! You'd actually gain a lot more
attention by speaking out against him!

It would be one thing if he could actually perform but I saw bits of him at Glastonbury and he was shockingly bad

Kanye West has a Doctorate in fashion.

An Honorary Doctorate, in the same way that Roy Keane is a Doctor of Law.

Kermit the Frog has one too...

He's from a middle class background, raised by his mother a university professor. His doctorate is honorary.

He's obviously influential and successful - that's the point of the thread. The question is why?

I can't comment on his rapping skills as that's not something I have much interest in but he comes across as obnoxious and entirely devoid of class. I've often thought the same OP - why do other successful people indulge his bullsh!t? He's certainly a master at marketing himself to the masses though.

You're from Limerick though, and seeing as you like Kanye, you're probably rough!

Are famous and influential singers, artists, musicians, producers etc. supposed to be nice too? Why? I would have thought many of them narcissistic assholes.

He has received massive critical acclaim for a number of albums. Much more so than many of his peers. That's not just marketing.

Man, that can't have been easy to swallow.

Like I said, I'm not making any comment on his talent as a musician.

There are plenty of critically acclaimed musicians who never achieve such levels of notoriety. That's marketing.

Nobody said he needs to be nice, but his crass behaviour exceeds that of most of his fellow celebs and makes the fawning over him seem even more strange.
