My sister reported similar things from her visit to Cairo. A group of men asked her boyfriend "How much for your blondy?" :-/

I would have replied -"A fiver".

Dreadful, I hope your family are safe.

I wouldn't take a holiday in a Muslim country EVER again. Went to Egypt to see the sites, and we were convoyed around with full military outriders when going from place to place...shudder.

All kips, Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey, Morocco and so on.

And the women are mostly second class citizens, they are full of horny males on the pull and then look for money from the women they meet, and the hassle in the shops is unreal, and the hygiene and food preparation is often of a low standard. Ugh.

You argue from the specific to the general.

Have you ever lived inn any of these countries?

If you go to a tourist area -you get -- tourist areas.

It's like saying walking done O'Connell Street in Dublin on Saturday night is representative of ALL Ireland.

Woman who was murdered had got the holiday as a gift after her husband recovered from a operation.

Quite frankly going to Egypt right now and not going to a tourist area would be downright dangerous, idiot even. You'd want to be fairly brave to go wandering round downtown Tunis without a guide.

And a firearm of some kind and be able to use it

BBC saying at least 37 dead now.

I just hope and pray no young kids have been caught up in this. It is cheaper for young families to go away in June with kids under school age, it is too horrible to contemplate frankly.

Spent a month travelling around Morocco on my motorbike. Beautiful country and people. Would go back in a heartbeat.

100% agree I went cycling through the slums and while at first was a bit nervy the people there and all over Morocco were so so friendly and chatty and even the "poor" were well educated about Ireland and could speak a bit of Irish.

It's also very liberal place and we were lucky to be there before the tourist boom proper took off so I only imagine they are even more tolerant.

If you are male, I am sure you enjoyed it. As a female in a Muslim country on holidays, it was not a pleasant experience for me.

I know my other half was approached a few times but all she had to do was lift her hand show a ring and they were very apologetic and backed off immediately

I agree. So why not do the research before you go?

NOw, Turkey, is a different matter. I admit when I moved there for work the first thing I bought was a knife - just in case. I'd heard lots of 'reports'. The only thing I ever used that knife for was cutting veg.

WOnderful people. Warm, generous to a fault and rightly proud of a great country (which alas has since been partly hijacked but an assh**le of a president).

Leave the tourist areas and get to know the real country. Clearly, you need to use common sense. But to label all 'Muslim' countries as unsafe and dirty is wrong. I would prefer to walk around Izmir in Turkey after dark than Dublin any day of the week.

Reports say a 16 year old boy saw his parents and grandmother shot. Shocking.

When I think of the terror these monsters are unleashing, I'm reminded of that scene in Apocalypse Now, where Kurtz is talking about the time they inoculated all the children in this little village. After they left, a villager came after them in tears and brought them back. The Vietcong had come in and hacked off the children's arms and left them in a little pile.

"And then I realized they were stronger than we, because they could stand that... these were not monsters, these were men... trained cadres. These men who fought with their hearts, who had families, who had children, who were filled with love... but they had the strength... the strength... to do that. If I had ten divisions of those men, our troubles here would be over very quickly. You have to have men who are moral... and at the same time who are able to utilize their primordial instincts to kill without feeling... without passion... without judgment... without judgment! Because it's judgment that defeats us."

    I'd go to Izmir tomorrow.

North Africa and the Middle East. Not so much.

It's not about religion, it's the fact there there have been 2 attacks in the last year in Tunisia at prime tourist sites. I think it's naive to expect that to stop. Soon there will be arm guards on the beaches and at the hotels, just like Egypt. That's not my idea of a holiday.

Really good quote frostyjacks..... the problem is ...it's a movie quote..

Judgement is what you need to make sense of the world you live in and what it means to you.

The reality is that judgement if left out of the equation will result in all humanity equalling zero.

Hitler had legions of people who left judgement out...so did Stalin...and Mao...and Pol Pot...and.....the list is as long as the millions who suffered because of those who refused to use their better judgement to take a stand before it was to late...

Why are they taking so long in revealing where the dead are from?.It happened around 9 hours ago now.

I suspect they are ensuring that all the families have been contacted especially as once their identities have been released they will have the media stuck in their faces magnifying their misery.

I agree. Places like Tunisia and Turkey are a cheap and affordable price point for a lot of budget holiday seekers however, and so there will always be a market for them.

I can't imagine the scene of terror witnessing that attack today. Lying on the beach and suddenly a bloke opens fire. Sickening.

I saw a thing earlier on the news about people posting the message 'I will holiday in Tunisia this summer' after the museum attack a few months ago.

They then showed how IS responded with the same message with drawings of guns.A bit chilling to say the least.

I was in sousse,Tunisia a few years ago and from the moment the plane landed I actually got a weird feeling about the place! Most of the people were very nice but it just felt very shanty outside of the hotel and my mobile wouldn't work there, and heading for a walk was a nightmare as kids young as 5 were dragging out of us looking for money! The day we arrived we walked the streets and there was like a parade going on, guards walking up the streets with guns, found out the president of Tunisia was in town!

The lady from Co. Meath who was murdered in Tunisia.... her name is now on the news websites.

What a horrible tragedy. And for all 37 who were killed.

    What a terrible tragedy.

Poor lrish lady killed while on holiday.
She was a child of Ireland whilst the whole country is united in grief.

Couldn't Tunisia have prevented this? If their politics and religion had not been badly constructed and slightly off balance then this awful tragedy would not have happened.

No disrespect meant by this post, just pointing out how last weeks sentiments may have been over the top.

Went to to Tunisia about 10 years ago. Stayed very close to where this attack happened. We even took the train to Tunis for a few nights from Sousse and wandered the streets on our own. Went out to see the ruins in Carthage not a bother. Wouldn't dream of doing it now. Crazy.

I seen elsewhere that a bloke took three bullets for his fiancé and told her to run. After hours of waiting she finally got a call to say he was alive after having an operation for a shattered pelvis and a heart attack. Horrific to think what that poor woman went though.
On another note. I see the French perpetrators were on the watch list from 2006-2008. These people don't all of a sudden change. Round them up in the middle of the night and disappear them. **** their 'rights'. They lose them as soon as they remotely become associated with this ****

On the contrary, it was because Tunisia is becoming increasingly secular and stable and a destination for foreign tourists that it angered IS so much.
