That flight that turned back just landed in Brussels. Be interesting to see why but my guess is it was a 'better safe than sorry' approach

Such as? NATO 'rely' on our support? What do you mean? Do you think NATO can't funstion if we aren't there to support them?

PLease give examples of such exercises.

"Plenty of NATO exercises rely on our support" is different (I assume you grasp this?) than "NATO rely on our support" So, the whole premise of your rather testy line of questioning is invalid.

That said, because it's Friday, here are some links which should demonstrate the farce of Irish neutrality.

    Our defense minister:

“Ireland’s relations with NATO are conducted within the framework of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) and Partnership for Peace (PfP), which we joined in 1999. Our continued participation in both of these foras enables us to continue to develop the capabilities of Ireland’s Permanent Defence Force for peacekeeping, conflict prevention and crisis management operations under UN mandates, thus improving the quality of our contribution to UN missions and to UN-mandated missions led by regional organisations such as the EU and NATO. The EAPC is a forum for consultation involving all PfP participants on a wide range of issues, from peacekeeping to women, peace and security to disaster relief.”

    Yep, neutral alright.

US rely on Irish airspace, more than 2 million troops have passed through Shannon airport since 2002.

    Neutral. Yes sir.

They say her condition is unknown. That could be injured, or it could mean dead. Either way, a very traumatic situation for her friends and family.

    And now Kuwait.

It's also being mentioned in Tunisian updates. 25 killed in a Mosque explosion, claimed by ISIS.

    1) Destroy Tunisia's only major revenue generating industry ... tourism
    2) Country falls to chaos as they economically collapse
    3) ISIS swoop in and radicalise ppl and "convince" them of a better way of life

    Boom ... another territory won

HOw doe sthat imply that NATO 'Rely' on Ireland. It's nonsense to make such a claim.

Ireland is allowing Shannon to be used as it is a bargaining chip and Ireland wants t obe seen to be on the side of teh good guys in case anything does happen here.. They could just as easily use Belfast.

Do your research. Tourism is only 6.5% of Tunisia's national GDP. Hardly a nail in their coffin

So sad, would not holiday there myself, given its proximity to Libya which is not exactly stable.

Cop on lads. This is a thread about a Tunisian terrorist attack, not about the US using Shannon as an unarmed military stopover.

Irish woman one of 27 dead in Tunisian attack

An Irish woman is among the 27 dead in the apparent terrorist attack in a hotel in Tunisia.
Sources familiar with the case said the Irish victim had been critically injured and when asked if she had died one informed source said news of her condition “is not good at all”.
The Irish Times understands the women in her 50s and is from the Robinstown area of Co Meath. She had been holidaying in Tunisia with her husband, who has made contact with the Irish consular authorities.

I wouldn't take a holiday in a Muslim country EVER again. Went to Egypt to see the sites, and we were convoyed around with full military outriders when going from place to place...shudder.

All kips, Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey, Morocco and so on.

And the women are mostly second class citizens, they are full of horny males on the pull and then look for money from the women they meet, and the hassle in the shops is unreal, and the hygiene and food preparation is often of a low standard. Ugh.

Spent a week in that resort couple of years ago. very friendly staff and locals! This is absolutely shocking.

It's all about bringing down Tunisias New fledgling democracy and making it fall under the influcence of Islamic State.

It's been like that since the 90s at least. You would have know that before you went.

Spent a month travelling around Morocco on my motorbike. Beautiful country and people. Would go back in a heartbeat.

If you are male, I am sure you enjoyed it. As a female in a Muslim country on holidays, it was not a pleasant experience for me.

To be fair, it's not advisable to do that as a woman.

Yes of course I knew, but the reality of it on the ground was a bit weird and very scary, especially crossing the desert. I was terrified that some terrorist would suddenly appear over the sand dunes and spray the tour bus with bullets or something. Never again.

My sister reported similar things from her visit to Cairo. A group of men asked her boyfriend "How much for your blondy?" :-/

    Ireland is pretty safe.
But but but Western liberal democracies as JUST as bad - nay, worse - than Islamic countries because of some_sh*tty_reason.
