What are your thoughts on this? Do you think if someone has a few glasses of wine at the end of the day, say 2-3 nights a week, alone, is this perfectly normal? Or a little worrying?

If it feels good why is it worrying.

I'm having a glass of Captain Morgan's right now and I'm alone.

Although, I've also just spent the past 15 mins talking to myself. So I guess that confirms the stigma.

    It's not excessive.

I have a few drinks on some nights. It helps me relax. Be it at home or out with people, I never really binge drink. Why would that worry anyone?

Pfft, I drink alone the whole time and have done for years and it has never done me any harm. The voices in my head told me so.

I usually have a pint alone when I have finished a long shift. Ive been talking to people all day and running around a kitchen like a blue arse fly so I like a little me time for a few minutes

Depends really is it a normal glass measure or two a night to wind down or is the bottle polished off
Back in the day used to love calling in to the local for a quiet pint most evenings after nixers to read the paper undisturbed switch off and clear the head for the following day
Mind you that generally went tits up after the third pint that's when "party time bonzo " came out to play ah good times

Think you need the mobile and Facebook close. To stay in touch with all those in the pub saying "haul in".

I'm in the pub on my own reading the paper and flicking through boards.ie on my own while sipping a pint... I like me... I like my own company. I went to the cinema earlier on my own... Why not!! I've two parties next weekend to attend and my brain will be melted with gowls.

    I can tolerate myself.

Its really not any of our business..they can do what they want..as long as theyre not showing up drunk in public and causing distress or discomfort for others by doing it then what harm. Its worse to eat a chinese takeaway every night but plenty of people do that and nobody says boo to them

I just got back from france, living with a host family in a small rural village and was shocked by the drinking habits there! They drink huge volumes of alcohol but all in a very controlled way. Wine was drank at lunch , one glass, and at dinner, maybe 2 glasses. Then in the nighttime a beer or two, that is a lot. But its spaced out and doesn't involve getting drunk like in ireland. And it wasnt just the family I was living with, at get togetheres with others in the village it was the same. They drink more there but theres nothing anti social about it.

Binge drinkers here give alcohol a bad name.

    I do this.

A beer or a whiskey after my kids are in bed. Once or twice a week.

    My god the shame.

There is massive confusion out there between binge drinking and alcoholism. People will look at themselves and say they only drink one night a week, they are not alcoholics, they don't need alcohol to function etc. And they are right, it is not alcoholism, but it is uncontrolled drinking which of itself is not good. They are missing the point that, for many, binge drinking and not classic alcoholism is a problem.

Perfectly fine once you are in control and you are drinking out of enjoyment as opposed to habit and boredom

Jon the club. What's the issue? Once you are in control and the drink isn't controlling you

But the Gubbermint thinks this is outrageous, along with buying the stuff from the Supermarket too. God almighty.

We HAVE to go to the pub to be protected from ourselves. That is the message here folks.

Coming to a house near you.

    Nanny State or what.

    Brilliant. Feel exactly the same.

Nothing wrong with it at all in my view.

Nevertheless, if I had a whole bottle of wine myself while alone, I'd probably not want to admit it.

But it has happened. I get through a bottle of wine very easily when drinking from those popular, bucket-sized goblets.

Yeah I blame the wine glasses….

If I have the house to myself which is rare, I like to relax with a glass of wine or a whiskey.

    Nothing unusual in it.

What are you on about. I have well under the 21 recommend units.

I much prefer sitting at home with a few beers on my own than going out with friends.

Going out always turns into an ordeal. Getting smart-casual dressed, arranging a meet time and place that suits everyone, meeting up with wierdos that for some reason need to travel in packs to get to the drinking destination, waiting for people, having to save seats for pricks that turn up late, people that insist on rounds, waiting for everyone to be ready to go for a smoke, queing at the bar and so forth. Then there is the getting home part and people that insist on waiting around forever to get a 7 seater taxi because we must travel in a pack.

Nope, 6 cans, a tub of Pringles and whatever is on Sky Sports for me. The likes of Facebook, board's and whatsapp where invented for the purpose of not having to physically socialise with people any more.

I work nights. My next drink will be a pint next Friday night/Saturday morning... It will be on my own after a 50 hour working week in stupid temperatures. I'm looking forward to it already.

Instead of a few glasses of wine, I would sometimes have a few mugs of wine while relaxing watching TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,199 ✭✭✭✭Spanish Eyes

Personal choice was always there to either drink alone or with others at home.

Until someone decided that it was not in the interests of the PUBS.

    Go figure.

Your home is your castle and they cannot control you there. EVER. As much as they would like to try!

I don't think it really ever about when or where or with whom you drink I think it's more about why you drink. If it's to relax at the end of a big day and your by yourself that seems to me a lot more healthy then getting smashed with by yourself or with other people because of some emotional reason!

    Oh fucck off.

Alcohol does not magically become more healthy in the prescence of others.

There's a lot of "ifs" to the question.

You should get 5 glasses of wine from a bottle. If a bottle lasts the entire week, that's quite reasonable.

If the person says "I can't sleep unless I've had some wine", I'd suggest they learn other ways to destress/talk to their doctor.

If the person gets unreasonably ratty when someone suggests that's quite a bit, it'd give me pause for thought.

The stigma about drinking alone is usually a concern that the quantity being consumed is underestimated. Combined with other signs, people may wonder "is it really one, maybe 2 glasses, 2-3 times a week?" Or is it really a bottle a night? Does the person pass up social events in order to stay home and have their glass of wine?

There's nothing wrong with either drinking at home, or drinking alone, or doing both. I would find it peculiar if it was all the time.
