    I've joined too. I upload manually every few days via USB from my Garmin watch to the Strava website, so I'm not on the fiddle if anyone's wondering why my runs are uploaded in batches :D

    I see the Garmin Forerunner 15 is on special offer in Argos for about €129 so I might end up getting one and doing the same as you.

    When I started running , I used to use the Strava app on my phone, but it was a PITA. Wearing the arm band used to drive me mad, and I had to swipe the screen every time I wanted to read the app data (out on the run)

    I picked up a Forerunner 10 last year. It's basic, but does what it says on the tin & is much easier than carrying a phone around. Granted, it would be great if the data uploaded automatically, but it only takes 2 minutes to do it via USB every week.

    The forerunner 110 can connect to a HR monitor and is only £90 on Amazon. I'd recommend it over the 15.

    Will catch up properly on this thread when I'm finally back at my laptop on Sunday :)

    Running on and off for the last few years.

    3 runs a week, varying between 8 and 10k

    How many days a week can you train?
    3 maybe 4 at a push. I have 3 kids under the age of 5 :)

    What do you want to achieve? Dream finishing time and realistic finishing time? Or just complete it in no specified time?
    After struggling last year over the last few miles i'm hoping to prepare and finish better
    Dream time 4:15. Realistic 4:30

    What marathon programme are you following?

    Hi swea...I mean Betty swollox :) welcome. Nice PBs from last year (ahem very familiar ones ;) ). You know the score so and an extra day or two training will mean the difference between a painful and a pleasurable 26.2 miles...especially after last year's last few miles (only three?! You did well in the year of the carnage :) ) Do you feel ready to start the 18 week plan next week? Without more detail, it's hard to tell but you might be on the low side of mileage but if you feel your aerobic base is solid that shouldn't be a problem. Do you plan to do any of the race series or similar this year?

    Now i just have my thoughts.. "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING TO YOURSELF"

    Haha yeah there's a bit of that alright (I'll say nothing about slooooow down ;):D ) My easy/steady runs are my thinking time. I solve the problems of the world :)

    I have run both with and without headphones. I know I'm very bold but I prefer to run with.

    My issue is that the breathing of other people in races really puts me off, especially if they sound in distress, it really throws me.

    I do like to run without headphones, it does allow me to focus on my breathing and my form, but its also nice to just break away from "constantly being connected" from one form or another.

    Occasionally when I'm running on my own, I listen to a talkshows like RTE 1 on a Sunday morning or "Game On" on 2FM. For me, it really distracts me on long runs and before I know it I'm a few miles in.

    Same here, I never run with headphones. Sometimes I think I would like to as it would be a great distraction. Then again, I am never really bored, even on long runs.

    Since I started keeping a log here on boards, I find myself trying to collect some little facts and figures during the run, to use in the report that evening. It is really a great distraction - it helps focus the mind.

    That, and coming up with Nobel-price winning ideas. Pity is that I can never really remember anything when I get home! :D

    Hi all, again not looking for medical advice.

    Was at physio today, he diagnosed mild tendonitis at the adductor attachment point. Treatment plan is a few sessions of shockwave therapy over the next month to six weeks. Anyone have the shockwave treatment before and was it beneficial? Also if he does get me back running by the end of July, will I bee to late to get ready for DCM 2015? I have been off since mid May so that would be 8-10 weeks out. I can cross train on road bike and swim, however no running what so ever. Just really annoyed with myself that I've wasted the last month getting deep tissue work etc done, which was never going to resolve the problem.

    What ever about training there should be wearing of headphones in races. You really need to have you wits about you. In the Dublin Half Marathon in 2013 people couldn't hear an ambulance approaching from behind or hear instructions to move to the side.

    You also miss out on the usually excellent on course support on race day. It's also against the rules in many races.

    Finally, in a marathon, during the last 6 or so miles every little thing will annoy you. Carrying a phone and wearing ear phones are likely to irritate you at this stage of the race.

    I can (kind of) understand earphones on long training runs but not really on race day.

    No real opinion shockwave therapy but it would be helpful if your physio was able to identify the source of the problem to prevent it from recurring.

    I gave up on headphones early last year, I was finding it hard to get into a rhythm while listening to music, I tended to speed up or slow down depending on what song came on.

    I listen to my breathing and the birds now when I run. I find a lot of runners with headphones have terrible breathing, although I find most runners in local runs have terrible breathing anyway.

    Source of the problem was me ignoring a niggle, trigger points on the adductor, turning something that possibly could have been easily treated into what I have now.

    Let's just say i realised never to ignore a niggle, and get treatment sooner rather than later.

    ah yes last years carnage i thought i was the only one who felt that :). I remember bodies falling everywhere, i was feeling ok until about 20 miles, luckily my wife and kids where at the 20 mile marker so i had to make it look like i was ok. when i hit the stillorgan road my legs basically told me to f*** o**. i know it may be a cliche but without the amazing support of the dublin crowd i may be still out there now :).

    i think i'm ready for the 18 week plan just need to pick one, whet would you recommend. last years training was all over the place and i missed several long runs. My saving grace was running the athlone 3/4 a few weeks before. This year i want to stick to a plan. I've signed up for the race series and rock and roll half and depending on how things are going i may do athlone 3/4 again.

    Anyway, I got home and my roommate was using the kitchen and only just finished, it's 8.40pm...is it too late to bother with dinner? What would you guys do? I've nothing 'easy' to eat, I'd have to cook everything etc which means I wouldn't eat until after 9.

    Do you have eggs? It'd take five minutes to knock together scrambled eggs. Organisation and planning ahead is key when you're training hard ;)

    Seriously, you should use that annoying breathing to your advantage. That person is suffering...you, however, are not! (Not as much as them anyway...) Reel them in and pass them out: "sayonara sucker" :)

    Hi NoelJ, welcome to the thread. You really sold yourself there ;) I'm presuming you've been building a base of more than 'whenever you feel like it/once a week' up to now? You possibly have some aerobic base from previous years but it's a diminishing return: the less you top it up, the less you'll get back.... What training plan did you use in previous years?

    Yes, distraction certainly has a place. At the same time, it's worth setting an alarm at regular intervals as a reminder to do a form and body-gauge check.

    Hi Tommyh, sorry to hear this, I feel your frustration! Only you can make the call about being ready. You might ask yourself whether you want to survive it this year or give it your best in 2016...
    Cross training will help to an extent but only getting out and getting your legs used to running the miles will get you over that line in one piece.Training for a marathon really extracts the max from your body and mind and a time frame of three months sounds awfully tight to me...best of luck with whatever you decide.
