I'm currently unemployed and won't be able to purchase a gym membership, so I'm looking into purchasing gym equipment, so that I can work out at home instead on a budget, so all my equipment will be purchased secondhand.

What equipment would people recommend me to purchase for my goals, which would be losing fat particularly around my midsection?

Don't worry too much about equipment. You can do a lot of bodyweight moves in a circuit to burn fat, squats, push ups, burpees, sit ups or planks.

Losing fat will mean cleaning up your diet more so than anything else and I'm sure people on here who are a lot more knowledgeable than me will agree with me on that if nothing else.

If I had to advise on buying equipment on a budget I'd say buy a good pair of trainers, a skipping rope and a pull up bar that fits in your door frame. You can do more than enough with these to burn fat and get stronger

    One dumbbell =
    single arm shoulder press
    single arm arnold press
    single arm floor press
    turkisk get up
    goblet squat
    DB Row
    side raises
    front raises
    rear delt swing/raise thing
    Side bends
    one arm shrugs
    one arm db snatch
    one arm cleans
    one arm farmer walks
    standing bicep curl
    concentration curl
    hammer curl
    overhead tricep extensions
    skull crusher
    wrist curls if you want
calf raises while holding dumbbell for extra weight
tricep kickbacks if you get bored

And that's with one Dumbbell you would just need a few plates so you can adjust the weight

    Then add in
    Pushups
    forward lunges
    reverse lunges
    air squats
Crossack squats = hard but build up to them
    planks

And if you could get a chinup bar then you could hit some chins, and if you dislike chins and can only do 1 or 2 then pick a number and hit that every second day. For example first day is 10 this means before you go to bed get 10 chinups, do them in single reps randomly throughout the day. Two days later get 11, then 12 etc.

A food scales will be the most vital piece of equipment for you. They're nice and cheap.

myfitnesspal app for food monitoring, YouTube for body weight circuits, cardio training. Both free!!
A pair of running shoes, some cheap training gear.

Self motivation is also free but can be very difficult to find, but this is the key element of being successful in your goals. I wish you the very best of luck, health and fitness is a life long process, do what you enjoy doing, try everything at least once!
