Not all fortunate enough to drive newer cars though, my Alfa gets though about a litre every 2000 miles... Hardly the end of the world to check it every so often.....

For me it's not about the inconvenience of having to check it as I would dip a car regularly enough anyway rather the fact that a healthly engine with minimal amount of wear on it should burn very little oil sub 1/2 a litre inbetween services. If it's using much more than that then it's either leaking or burning it now I suppose there is exceptions to every rule and infairness I wouldn't expect something with 200k miles to burn no oil but certainly upto 100k miles it shouldn't be an issue.

I'm getting my first new suspension part after 190km, upper control arm in the front passenger side.

Also getting the front discs and pads done while it's in.

    Tyre wear......sorted
    Clutch...........sorted
    Lower arms....sorted
    Drop links.......sorted
Upper arms, timing belt and service in a couple of weeks.

Bloody car is like triggers brush
But, not much left to go wrong only the engine  :pac:

That's because yours never has time to use any, it's too busy being driven by Mikka Hakkinnen!

A very broad statement there though. My Alfa has only 113k miles and I don't mind it burning a bit...

I frankly think you're way too fussy with cars, further evidenced by your ludicrous box of things you keep in the boot. :p

I'd rather drive a nicer older car that burns a bit of oil than a new econobox is essentially what I'm saying.

Infairness hi viz vest, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, tyre compressor, jump leads is something everyone should have in their car especially the first 3 for safety if nothing else.

These constant digs about econoboxes are getting old it's not like I targeted your car and said it was useless because it burns oil it's just my view on cars in general as I said for an older car with higher mileage (in general not referring to your car) it would be stupid of me to expect it to burn no oil. And I know every car burns oil to a certain extend but it's all about how much over what distance.

As I've said before most of my dads brothers are mechanics and you think I'm mechanically fussy they wouldn't keep a car that burns oil a month. They wouldn't buy one that's been sprayed or isn't completely original, if there was the slightest noise or rattle they would go to serious ends to fix it and wouldn't keep the car if it was uneconomical to fix some of it has rubbed off on me to a small extent yes I am mechanically fussy but then wouldn't be as bothered about body work as most people on here would be.

A home brewed one I decided to shoot this evening..
    For your viewing pleasure.

She'll break every speed limit in third!
If I was actually on the road of course.

Probably asked this before, but anyways - what should I be looking out for with a 1.4 petrol Golf?

Just seen THIS one online. Suits my budget and seems decent enough. I would love the 1.9tdi but the 1.4 suits better for insurance.

I think you two need to agree to differ for the long term. It's actually gettig tiresom to read.

In the same way there is more to life than dull modern diesels, there's more to life than money pit alfas too. Is there anything to be said for another mass?

I think ur mental, carrying around all that gear, my last 3 cars
    Alfa
    Citroen
Peugeot, none of them exactly known for reliability ;)
And I've never needed any of that stuff.

Edit: I do at least 30k km a year

And I am fussy, see the list of recent repairs above:(

If you look up my threads from a month ago I almost had a 1.4 golf bought but was out of it. I think they are nice cars but about as dead as it gets powerwise would be a huge amount slower than you mondeo and supposedly hard enough on juice.

Would the 1.6 petrol be any better?

Would love a Mk5 1.9tdi Golf but the insurance is a few hundred euro more, along with a decent one being hard to find. Any within my budget seem to be drove to the ground and with incredibly high mileage!

I drove a 1.6 6 speed that a certain vw garage had 2006 and liked it if that had been 5 door I would have strongly considered it but I just don't like 3 doors unless they are sports versions. The older 5 speed 1.6 before 06 was suppose to be unreliable basically every mechanic and anyone I talked to said avoid the 1.4 and 1.6 petrols in the mk5 golf. Tbh a mk5 golf is the real wrong car to be trying to buy on a tight budget and any cheaper diesel ones will have the ring driven out of them good clean mk5 golfs still make seriously strong money.

I'd agree bp is seriously risk averse

The Honda is off to my mechanic for a few small bits, interior cabin lights, New window switch on the drivers door and replacing a clip that keeps the two rods across the boot from rattling off each other

Then its ggoing to the local valet guy, and see how the bodywork comes up

Might also get the alloys refurbed they are manky

    There's a balance tbh

No digs were intended btw, genuinely.

What? Debate on a public forum? It was completed related to the idea of this thread, if you didn't like it, you didn't need to read it.

Nice jab at my own car though. Didn't realise it was a money pit, better scrap it and go buy some boring as sin Toyota Corolla instead. ;)

    Anyhow.....moving on...!

Must be a small boot alfaman:D

So after another 700 miles in the accord, the problem appears to be how I drive it, the sputtering and shuddering is gone but I can recreate it at will

The accelerator pedal is very long compared to ohs merc and I was driving it like the merc which didn't work

Switching to flat shoes and gettting a comfy position on the accelerator has made a world of difference

    Cousins, no doubt..

In other news, I have decided to throw in the towel with the classics and projects. A decision genuinely not taken lightly but for the good of myself the Wolseley is for sale. The 19 will be with me for life but its going into the garage for a while to stay there until I get the will back.

Anyone else watch "Supercars: The million pound motors:" It's starting shortly on cannel 4 plus1. It was an interesting documentary with nice Italian motors.

Nobidy likes a debate more than me but you two clearly have ultimately differing views.

I wasn't taking a dig at your car, you say it yourself in your signature.

I enjoy toyotas, i like bp's megane and you know i like your 156. Neither are for me though.

T'was very much a dig at my car, Alfas financially cripple me due to owning too many, since I bought that 156 back its been anything but a money pit. ;)

You go ahead and enjoy your Toyotas, and I will appreciate that myself and BP seem to have different views.

Seriously yes. My head just isn't with it presently, getting far too engrossed in things under the bonnet when I should be concentrating on real world things. I've only just taken a step back and looked at where the last 18 months have brought me. Nowhere, I've got nothing to show for them bar a few photos of some nice old cars.

Its an indefinite leave is how I'm looking at it

I disagree, what I like about here is that everyone is accommodated, most of us take good care of our cars etc
bp is over the top imo but having had algae and citroens, owners are less risk averse

I check oil weekly on both our cars based on Alfa ownership
