Well, first of all, global warming doesn't mean warmer weather for everyone, it's far more complex than that. It actually causes weather patterns to change. Ireland could suffer from heatwaves, droughts and even blizzards under global warming.

The planet stores most of its heat in the oceans and this causes the ice caps to melt quicker; it also causes more evaporation, which means more cloud and rain. The washout Summers of 2007 - 2012 are an example of what global warming could mean for Ireland.

If the ice caps melt, it could change the oceans current and Ireland is heavily influenced by the Gulf Stream. Should the Gulf Stream change direction or slow, Dublin could experience freezing cold Winters that other cities of similar latitudes experience. Dublin is on the same latitude as Edmonton, Canada and the average high in January there is -6.0°C.

There's also the increased risk of tropical storms reaching Ireland if the sea temperature keeps rising in the Atlantic. Ireland has never been hit by a hurricane because they tend to dissipate when they move over sea surface temperatures colder than 27°C, but that could change in the future. We recently set the record for the highest sea surface temperature of 20°C during the 2013 heatwave, so that could be a sign that the seas around Ireland are warming up.

The last two paragraphs are seriously contradictory. Global warming is happening. However some claims are over wrought.

The planet is dying because we've cut down most of the trees.

Trees are like "planet lungs". (yep, lungs for planets) ;)

Watched it in a documentary one time. Or maybe I made it up? YOU decide! :D

Get with the times OP. Global warming is yesterdays news like the ozone layer

All the kids talk about climate change now

someone needs to learn the difference between weather and climate

When they start tackling the real environmental disasters such as this and stop showing pictures of Polar Bears I might be interested.

AFAIK temperatures haven't increased in ten years, despite dire predictions.

    Its climate change.
Its getting wetter and milder. Certainly not hotter, so don't waste your time waiting for high temps.

As for temps not increasing in the last 10yrs, its a very gradual process. It might shift up by a degree or two over many decades, so we might not notice much happening in our lifetime.

Climate change is what you get when you try to apply two hundred years of data to five billion years of weather.

Anyone remember the daily mail headlines when we had the bad snow a few years ago? It was something like "-7 and they say global warming is real"

Because as Jon Stewart says global warming can't be real if it's cold where I am right now.

In fairness the weather 4.7Bn years ago was different. Dull sunshine , cloudy but feeling warm for this time of year

and a small chance of precipitation, as it looks like Theia will pass us by

Here is an interesting prediction from 1958

    http://harpers.org/archive/1958/09/the-coming-ice-age/

..the warming of the Arctic leading to an ice age in NW Europe!

    Thats a lot of maybes.

Its a bunch of hippies moving the goalposts.

Global warming? Proven wrong, uh, uh, er, Climate Change! Yeah!

Cue 10 year plateau in global temps....uh, uh, er...

Here's a thought: "climate change" replaced "global warming" to better reflect the evidence that's out there.

I think "Global Warming" is a vastly more accurate description of what the IPCC is telling us is going on.

"Climate change" is meaningless as it has been going on constantly for the past 3 billion years at least.

If CC better reflects the evidence then the IPCC is getting everything wrong!

Anthropogenic Climate Change is the best term, the problem being the human contribution. Plenty of temperature records broke in Austria this summer, for the same reason Ireland had a **** summer

Anthropogenic Global Warming would be much better. The ACC is being caused by warming, simple as that.

If that isn't the case then all the science is wrong!

The use of "climate change" is merely a PR stroke to get around the "problem" of cold winters in America or cold summers in Ireland etc when "uninformed" people say things like "global warming my a*se".

That might be good PR but the phrase is still meaningless.

No, it's not so simple, warming can cause long term global cooling through feedback effects. The atmosphere is so coimplicated as to not yet be fully understood and assuming warming will be the final end result is not certain. Plus warming or cooling does not matter really, rather that we are accelerating the process

Well if the warming is causing cooling then what's the problem! (Apart from the oxymoronic aspect of the sentence! :) )

Warming is warming; there may be local or temporary cooling effects but all the models are pointing to a rapidly heating world; vindication of the models is claimed by the rises in global temperature recorded.

If feedback or other complications are going to cause cooling over any extensive area then the IPCC models and projections are wrong - it really is that simple at all but a micro level in terms location.
