I'm cutting down dictatorship and democracy to just Hitler, Mussolini and WW2.

I'm cutting down the good oul US of A to race relations and foreign policy.

For Movements for political and social reform I shall gamble with cultural nationalism, land reform and Davitt.

As for the dastardly documents- Treaty and that oul religious one.

History is a high risk, high reward sort a subject

I've cut down to Mussolini, Hitler an WW2 for dictatorship and cut down to race relations and US economy ups downs and effects. Then treaty negotiations with abit of the congress on the side tbh Belfast is so easy there is very little to know about it compared to the other two.

The Treaty is the hot pick for the case study in my view. With it not coming up last year, the anniversary of 1916 next year and the fact that there are different case studies next year. But then again I'd have the Congress well know just in case. Anyway the content in it is very concise and easy.

For Dictatorship and Democracy, the questions last year weren't very appealing but this can only be good for us. I'm looking at, as many on this are also predicting, Anti-Semitism, Technology of Warfare, Nazi/Stalinist State, Hitler's Foreign Policy and propaganda in Germany and The Soviet Union.

For Northern Ireland, there is always going to be a question asked which involves BB and O'Neil. That is why you won't have to look further than the two of them. I'm looking closely at the BB and O'Neil comparison, Civil Rights, BB and O'Neil's contributions separately and the Welfare State maybe Direct Rule too.

My last topic is Division and Realignment. Not a common one I know but maybe someone out there is doing it too. For this topic my big bankers are the 1973 Oil Crisis and Social Criticism/Literature. European unity is always a good one to have lined up too just be careful of the different parameters that can be asked. I also have Fall of Communism and Communist Economies in my back pocket too.

Hopefully this will be of some help to some of you. Plus I'd like to hear any other tips anyone has.

Im doing movement for social reform also, and something always come up on home rule/land. I think a land question on its own because it's never been asked or Parnell strengths and weaknesses as if hasn't been asked for a while! So focus on parnel/HR/Land and unionist opposition and you should be grand! Also pay particular attention to the 1885 elections as it's been 200years this year!

For Northern Ireland, what does BB stand for?

I personally don't like HR. To me, it can come up in too many different ways and I don't know if I could twist my knowledge to the question. Hence why I'm doing Unionism, the lockout and probably the GAA.

Okay, I don't know about the rest of you studying history but I'm extremely overwhelmed right now.... And I figure we're all a team right? So fellow historians I think it's all time we had a nice long discussion and help each other out right? Pull all our teachers tips together to see where we're at? So anyone willing to help reply or drop me a PM and we can have some history banter. Much love people

So weird I was literally just about to write a post just like this! Yeah I felt okay for the pre's and now I just feel really panicky on what to cut down on or what to leave in! Our teacher taught Northern Ireland REALLY badly to us so I'm praying something straight forward like Coleraine or Suningdale comes up so I can just rattle that off. She seems adamant that The Treaty Negotiations is up for the Document but I'm kind of hoping for Eucharistic Congress, its just a nicer Q to answer with not a lot of room for a poorly phrased Q.

For Dictatorship and Democracy, I think it'll be a double header between Hitler/Mussolini on Church/State or possibly facist regimes, and then a separate Stalin Q - possibly on rise to power or propaganda/personality cult. For America, hopefully Lyndon Johnson vs Harry Truman, Cold War, Foreign Policy and definitely a Race Relations Q

They're the topics I did well in class so I'm really hoping for those questions or something similar!

Same our teacher did Northern Ireland terrible. I haven't a clue about NI to say the least. I'm hoping to do well enough in my other sections

Yeah, we covered a lot about the growth of fascism under Dictatorship and Democracy. We also did early rises to power I think, not much on Church/State relations as it appeared last year though. I would like to think Hitlers Foreign Policy is a possibility also? For Stalin we just covered him all as he somewhat of a definite question in some way or form?

For America I'm lost, Lyndon Johnson and Race Relations have come up almost 3 years in a row I doubt they'll go for a 4th? 😱 I feel either an essay on the Bus Boycott or Vietnam war as case studies are due up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 cab15

Yeah, we didn't do much past paper work so I really don't have much knowledge of how frequently topics come up - we literally just write the essays for all topics! Yeah Bus Boycott and Vietnam would be very accessible questions!

42 minutes including reading and planning time but you could probably gain time on the documents.

    What I'm covering:
    USA:
    Moon Landing
    Economy
    Race Relations
Foreign policies and the two wars etc.

    Northern Ireland:
    Coleraine controversy
    Welfare state
Sunningdale/Anglo (Doing both individually and its possible they'll come up together)

    Dictatorship:
    Stalin and characteristics of russia
    Britiain inbetween the war.
Propaganda and how dictators used it.. etc

I think this should be enough honestly but who knows.

Our teacher is a LC examiner, and he's gotten 2/4 right every year for each topic

    DICTATORSHIP AND DEMOCRACY
1- Compare Britain and Russian Economy
    2- Nazi Propaganda
    3- Vichy France
4- New Technologies and the Home Front in Britain

    USA AND THE WORLD
1- Role of Women (Friedan and Monroe)
    2- Military and Information Technology
    3- Economy 63-89
4- Age of consensus and Religion

    MOVEMENTS FOR REFORM
    1- 85/86 Elections
    2- Religion and Education
    3- Land Agitation
    4- Redmond and Carson leadership

Be aware that someone being an examiner gives them no particular advantage in predicting questions on the papers.

Tips on how best to approach the paper / answer questions (in general), yes, it might easily give a little extra insight into that all right.
