sure you won't come to Cork for the HM? :p

Nah, I spend enough time down there  Yeah I know, I was thinking the same thing - there seems to be a few consistent points!! Ha - I thought it was just me noticing him

Roll on Dunshaughlin alright. Glad the flabs was ok today, you'll find those 5 seconds off another spell with less interruptions and more sharpness in the legs.

Great result yesterday Laura. Well Done!:) The splits (and report) suggest a very well managed race. Great to be able to run with someone around the same pace too.

    Monday 18th: Rest/recovery

Trip to the podiatrist in the evening. One or two things that needed a bit of TLC and to maybe mention that weird toe niggle which hasn't gone away. The physical therapy session definitely helped but once I started back up with the miles it came back. Not as bad, and not when I'm running/exercising but enough to know that something probably isn't quite right. She reckons the root issue is because the toe is longer than my big toe it's a biomechanical thing and the toe is taking too much of the pressure. She strapped it up to give it some padding in the meantime, told me to ideally keep that on and dry for a few days and stay off it running wise. I'm to go back next week and get a mould/wedge thing (no extra cost) that will fit to my foot/toes and help with the issue and spread the pressure and work around from my "big" toe. I won't lie, I'm a bit unsure about it but I'll reserve judgement until I see it and give it a go. Didn't need much convincing from her to stay off the feet on Monday, nearly 2 hours of cycling (to work, to the podiatrist, then home after) was enough of an active recovery day after Terenure. I was feeling it when I was heading for home - passing Duanington on his run as I shouted at him in a ladylike fashion from the road! :D

    Tuesday 19th: Rest

I was very disciplined, no run.

    Wednesday 20th: 6 miles @ 10:18, average HR 157bpm

Stir crazy after two days off, runners back on. If I had been wondering if I gave it welly on Sunday this run would have answered the question. My legs were still in ribbons, my quads were tight, going up the short hill into St. Annes I thought my legs were on fire, it felt like I had a steel beam in the leg where there used to be a calf - on both legs! Stopped about half way to stretch a bit and by the last mile everything was a bit better and the pace picked up a bit.

    Thursday 21st: Squash

    Friday 22nd: 8.5 miles total

    AM: 4.5 miles @ 10:21, average HR 161bpm

Runmute to work, kept this easy - the usual HR a touch higher first thing in the morning and I was planning a double day. Legs felt good, had to hold them back over the last couple of miles.

    PM: 4 miles @ 9:57, average HR 155bpm

Headed home and was planning to stretch it out a bit to about 5 miles and go the long way around to vote on my way home. But just before 4 I had to pull up with a dart through the hip. Disappointing as I thought this was gone, there wasn't a whimper in the last 3 weeks. I thought I noticed a bit of tightness earlier so hopefully just some foam rolling and tennis ball action will nip it in the bud. One to watch over the coming days, will be careful with it. I was close to home so called it quits at 4, no need to string out a gingerly moving or wincing final mile. Still walked around to vote after I got home - don't worry ;) On my run I did get thrown an absolutely filthy look by some woman who I collided shoulders (genuinely not on purpose) with as we passed on a very narrow path because she decided her and her person didn't need to walk in single file and could still move nearly two abreast in the space that just about fits two. Love, I'm actually not a second class citizen  - I shouldn't have to step in the gutter in the narrow, heavy traffic road with the articulated trucks just to spare you the inconvenience of having to make a bit of room for others around you. Rant over. Not in the mood for such bs today.

+1 on the path rage... I sometimes wonder if I'm invisible as I run towards pedestrians, they genuinely seem oblivious, i.e., rude... then again, I give out about bikes on footpaths even more!! where's the rant thread when we need it.

sounds like your toe is holding up well so that's good.

I was like a demon by the time I got home - went to the supermarket after voting and the amount of people who just **** their trolleys and baskets in the middle of the aisle blocking the way for everyone was mind boggling. One of those days. Yup toe is ok, hopefully this thing will help long term.

    Saturday 23rd: 2.5 miles @ 9:34

Set out planning on lactate threshold intervals to get a bit of speed training back in after the interruptions of the last two races. The hip felt uncomfortable at first which could have been from my foam rolling last night. I said I'd see how it was during my warm up before making a decision. Got into my stride and it went away. 1.5 miles of a warm up and I started on my first interval of 8 minutes. I was about 7 minutes in (and going well) when the all too familiar dart of pain came through. Not as bad as it has been before but I binned the run there and then. Walked straight home - I had kept on a loop close to home just in case so didn't have far to go. It might seem strange to have tried this session today but it's not brought on by speedier work, it's a non discriminating niggle that comes along once I'm into a run of any speed really. In fact it's always come on my slower easy runs! The area felt caught/tight on my walk home - I don't know if the root cause is the glute, or the IT band or something else. Won't go out tomorrow anyway, maybe leave it until Tuesday or Wednesday before a little tester with some foam rolling and light exercises in the meantime. If it's still there I'm back to square one. I didn't jump straight back into 30 mile weeks, I'd been easing the mileage back up. Oh well. And the last couple of weeks had been going so well.

Sorry to hear Laura. Hate those unpredictable issues that happen when you're not expecting them. Odd that there wasn't a peep out of it in Terenure. Hope you get to the root cause of it soon.

Laura, I have been sufferring from the same thing on/off for years. Sometimes it is good for months but it is always lurking. I have yet to get to the bottom of it.
Unfortunately rest never seems to make any difference so I personally just run through it; the only thing I find helps is a good sports massage so I try to get one every 2-3 weeks.

Yeah it's been fine since tallaght. It's a frustrating one alright. I don't think it's a serious injury per se, more of an annoying but hard to nail down niggle.

Thanks meno, that's interesting. Do you do any strengthening or stretches for that area that you find helps? I'm already rethinking my not running today statement as like you I'm not entirely sure rest will really help, I'm kind of hoping I'll just get out there and it'll be gone again. Wishful thinking perhaps. Once it pops up though it's hard to run through it as it makes any sort of repetitive strides difficult as it keeps happening until I just walk it off. If it's still there this week a sports massage to work it out a bit will be on the cards alright!

I went to a certain well known and highly recommended physio for months and did lots of weighted squats and lunges etc (and paid €50 a week for him to 'observe me ) but it never made a shred of difference, I don't think its a strength issue.

Anyway I can recommend Ecoli as he was the first to even temporarily cure my issues but they keep returning. Maybe I am just being a bit 'moany' because I have had it all this week!!

PS, your hip issues could of course be completely different to mine so take what i say with a pinch of salt!!

Ha, that's allowed, I can't judge - I've been moany for days as you can see from my previous posts :D I'll see how the next few days go anyway and then it might be time to get it looked at. Thanks for the possibly related, or entirely unrelated hip experience sharing :P I hope yours is on the mend soon too.

Thanks A. Some improvements I hope. Went out last Sunday and got horrendous darts of pain 2 miles in. Decided it was time to get it sorted. Managed to get an appointment with someone the other day - went to someone new, a recommendation, as I needed to get something a bit closer to home with the week I had. Appears to be nothing sinister, a very very tight and angry it band. Did some work on the hip area and the outside of the knee. Oh the pain, sweet kittens. Said he was surprised I hadn't been having knee pain given how tight it was. Hoping one session will clear it up, if I'm still feeling anything by tomorrow/Monday to go back as another one might be needed. Thinks my knee is moving inwards as I run which is pulling the band out of shape and causing the problems. Have some strength exercises to do from now to stop it from reoccurring and told to foam roll. Went out yesterday and today and things were better but some slight twinges still so depending on the next day or two I'll head for another session if needed. But I hope I'm on the right road anyway.

    Niggle update as above.

Sunday 24th: 1.92 miles binned run

After initially thinking I wouldn't head out on Sunday I went with the delusional "no, maybe today will be different. You might have turned a corner, give it a go". I was delusional. It was worse than the previous two days. I walked home in a huff resigned to the fact I needed help.

Monday - Thursday: Rest from running

Ticking over though with squash one day and my usual cycling for commuting. The niggle doesn't appear with any other sort of activity so at least I can keep things moving. Had my appointment on Thursday and was told I could head out over the weekend but with the advice of keeping an eye on it and returning if needs be.

    Friday 29th: 4 miles @ 9:59, average HR 153 bpm

Runmute home. Less than a mile from home I thought I heard someone calling me and there's Annapr tapering along behind me. Quick chat for a couple of minutes and discussion of Cork, before we made our separate ways along the seafront. One small twinge in the hip but not too bad, in general there was a sense of discomfort but probably more to do with a hangover from the pain of treatment!

    Saturday 30th: 5 miles @ 9:56, average HR 156

The usual loop and added on bits to bring me around the town here visiting the OH's family. Deja vu on the hip, one sharp dart but overall loosening out as the run progressed.

    Sunday 31st: Rest

I had planned to go out but walking back from the shops in town I could feel something so I decided not to push it with a series of daily runs. If nothing else it probably confirmed I need the second session. Taking the time to study instead (aside from this little update hiatus). I'll head out again tomorrow.

Not a great month really, the last week and a bit knocked me a bit. Although there were 2 PB's in there (5k and 5mile), but not the mileage I wanted and no sessions or longer runs - although partly down to the fact I had 2 races as well to be fair. If nothing else it's kept a bit of a base that I can build some consistency back onto soon enough hopefully.

Thanks spaceylou - God I hope you didn't read the whole thing. Lots of waffling and ranting! I see from your log we have similar enough times from starting off. My first half in 2012 was 2.20ish. I saw you're putting your plan together, the only thing I'd say is to try and maybe include a tempo or fartlek once a week. Something simple initially, I always thought they seemed scary sessions but they're not and they really help. Also strides at the end of an easy run are a good way to add a touch of speed and help with form as well I think. Lots more experienced following here can advise more specifically but something that to think about!

Thanks for that Laura, Annapr has said the same thing to me so will look at it a bit more closely - I like fartlek so could switch a midweek one to some kind of farklek and/or tempo.

And emmmm yeah, did read the whole log - was a slow day in work
