Except that all the cases you refer to have already arisen, and same-sex marriage is unlawful both in the Republic and the North. You don't need same-sex marriage to be unlawful for these cases to arise. It's nonsense to suggest that "Lawyers for Yes" are motivated by a desire to generate work for themselves. All the evidence suggests that they'll have the work regardless of whether same-sex marriage is legalised or not.

(Now, if they were "Celebrants for Yes" . . . )

    Just voted No.

My vote was cast in no offence to anyone of homosexual persuasion. Let the cards fall as they will tomorrow. :)

Me and my 6 family members, and extended family of 37 voting adults have voted yes.

Cast in a 'no offence to anyone who doesn't care about adopted children or young LGB teens' persuasion.

    Long live democracy.

I voted Yes earlier today before heading off to work. My mum's probably going to vote Yes too. My dad's worked in England for the past three years, and all of the posters about "children need a mother and a father" have upset my 11-year-old brother who's really missed our dad since he left for England.

That's how democracy works. People have a rightcto put a mark in either box.

Busy turnout in my polling station. Glad to see people exercising their democratic right.
Will be interested to see the outworking of it in the RDS tomorrow.

I probably shouldn't even bother but...how is a vote telling homosexual people they don't deserve equal rights not offensive to homosexuals? You don't get to disown discrimination by prefacing it with 'no offence'.
Some see it as equality others see it as conscience and mortality.

It's not an either/or for most Yes voters as they can't in good conscience vote against marriage equality.

If you can read this, you're too close!

Cast my Yes just before 8 this morning. I was surprised by the amount of people around the polling station, there should definitely be a good turnout.

Marriage is available to all, equally, already.

    Huh?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,572 ✭✭✭Black Menorca

No it isn't. You are aware the same argument was made against allowing interracial marriage?

Marriage is available to all, equally. Fact. :)

No, it's not. Seamus O'Brien can't marry Jack Murphy if he wishes.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,572 ✭✭✭Black Menorca

Repeating what you already said and adding 'fact' doesn't make it any more true.

Do you think we're just having this referendum for the craic, or it's just a big opinion poll or something?

The fact that you ignore said fact doesn't make it any less true. :)

But both can marry Sally O'Brien (and the way she might look at you) equally, but not at the same time of course. :)

    Ahhh Sally.

    So what's this referendum for?

    Excellent question Doctor.

Just what is it all about?

Makes as much sense as most of the No arguments I suppose. Yay consistency!

I've cast my Yes vote proudly today. I've done a bit of canvassing with YesEquality too and met the most passionate, brave, positive people. For the most part the response was resoundingly positive- a notable exception was today for 10 minutes before mass where our polite, positive and well behaved demeanour was met with scorn, filthy looks and a statement mumbling that I was an abomination and that they would pray for me.

I'm not even gay, I started canvassing because my beautiful baby was stillborn in January. I canvassed in his memory and in the hope for a better and more just country for the future children I hope to have. Myself and my husband have been each other's rocks through this awful time and I sincerely hope that every couple with that much love and commitment will get the chance to become husbands and wives after today.

I honestly can't imagine how tough this referendum has been for the lgbt community in Ireland- they have been tormented with hatred and judgements- I hope that the amount if support and love they have been shown will provide balance- and hopefully a resounding Yes will be the ultimate mark of approval and love.

I must say I do feel for some of the older people who have spent their lives wrapped around the finger of the Catholic Church, they are doing as they have always been forced to do, toe the line and do as the local priest suggests. I can only imagine that there is the genuine fear that this vote will mark some sort of moral collapse. I hope that a Yes vote will prove to them that their world will carry on turning and that the only difference is that a minority group in our communities will live fuller lives and the gay children of today and tomorrow will feel more accepted.

Finally, to the people who manage to balance being Christian and being tolerant and open, I salute you. For having your own mind, for living by what I consider the most crucial advice within Christianity 'love one another as I have loved you.' Can you imagine if the whole world lived by that? What a world it would be. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Allowing gay people to marry. Hence the whole 'marriage equality' thing that you seem to be under the impression already exists.

Hint: The referendum is called the marriage equality referendum.

Oxymoron if I ever saw one given marriage is already equally available to each citizen of the country.

A stairs is available for everyone to take. If only those lazy wheelchair people would accept it.

No it's not. A heterosexual couple can currently marry, a same-sex couple cannot.

Hence the lift being there so everyone has equal access.

    Equality, there's that word again.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,572 ✭✭✭Black Menorca

Yes, it is, provided people only want to marry those of the same sex.

But marriage is between a man and a woman. Full stop. Available to all, equally.

We're in agreement here. Any single man can marry any single woman in this country.

Everyone eligible has equal access to it.

NASA have just reported that the point of that post has collided with a satellite flying over Opus Dei HQ.

Your argument is closer to saying we already have stairs, so why needs lifts.

Don't be getting all Jesuitical on me now. ;)
