I don't mind that it's a Pukka Pad, but the fact that they're then calling it a 'Jotta' is really irritating me.

I didn't notice that until I took the photo - cringeworthy! :pac:

I think this calls for a new thread: "What's on your shopping list today"

Mrs. Loire's birthday today and we're heading to the Ivory Tower in Cork. Been a few times and love it. Can't wait. I'll be having the 8 course Japanese tasting menu if it's on :)

    Loire.

Sublime meal last night. Went for the standard* 5 course meal. Surprise starter was a type of spring roll with pork julienned carrots and celery (I think). Next up was carpaccio of mallard with beatroot. This was served in a fan-shaped circle with a salad and was superb. Following this was oyster in miso soup. Mains was rack of lamb (cooked pink) with some curried potato cubes. Finally I had raspberry creme brulee. The food was (as always) superb and washed it down with a lovely Ripassa Valpolicella. Mrs Loire's mains (Steak Teriyaki) was to die for!

    * If you call the menu here standard - very wide, diverse offering!

For anyone thinking of coming to Cork, I'd highly recommend a stop by.

    Loire.

In the lab, we would use a little magnetic "flea" and a magnetic hotplate, that was a great stirrer, I wonder can it be adapted to cooking? :)

It is not a bank holiday here :(. Reading about all of your bank holiday food from work is making me grumpy!

    Absolutely.
Because curry should be about pain.
    :D

I have a jar of it, having ha Roghan Josh recently. That's about my level - moderately hot. Korma is just dull.

It doesn't have to be dull. I've made quite spicy & flavoursome kormas in the past.

There's a korma in the cooking club gets rave reviews. And now I am reminded I need to make it and as I am hitting up Eurasia with a VENGEANCE tomorrow I shall pick up the necessary for it.

Bit of an odd one here, but over the past few months (since November maybe) I've noticed that anytime I buy garlic, it has a grassy or odd flavour? Is it just me?

I've bought it from Tesco, Lidl, SuperValu, Aldi, Dunnes and the local veg shops.

I've tried organic and non organic and the issue is with both of them.

As a result I've found myself not adding garlic to dishes as much which is a pity as its something I really enjoy and love the flavour of.

A good Korma is an absolute joy.

    Garlic

I get zero flavour from shop bought garlic any more, and I've resorted to using Garlic granules to get anything resembling garlic flavour into my sauces.

It's all chinese crap that's come overland for months - and is not worth the effort of peeling.

If I'd time I'd try to grow my own.

Garlic from China just boggles the mind, it grows perfectly well in Europe.

Yip. I bought some Spanish garlic recently and there was a huge difference.

Must start growing my own actually as we chomp through tonnes of it!

I get some giant french garlic from someone who grows it themselves, it's fantastic! And it takes ages to go off - any garlic I buy in the supermarket goes off really quickly.

Phew! Glad to know I'm not the only one with the issue. I honestly thought the issue was with me maybe being immune to the flavour of garlic or something.

I've started using the powdered garlic too.

@ Loire - Can I ask where you got the Spanish garlic from? I can only find Chinese locally.

I really miss the nice, fresh garlicky smell of using fresh garlic in cooking, and also on the pan when doing steaks too. :(

    Hiya

I get mine from The Roughty Fruit King in the English Market - it's the place opposite the olive place

I got myself a lovely 'wet' garlic as a treat a couple of weeks back and, after using one clove, I have lost it somewhere in my house and cannot find it. Tarnation!! It was nice garlic and all

Wet garlic? :o What is that? Sorry for the stupid Q!

Not stupid, I didn't know either till I bought it! It's just a young garlic, which should be part of the earliest crop of the season, that hasn't been hung to dry yet. The garlic head still has a big green stalk

I've bought garlic from my local Aldi, and it was Chinese and like the garlic from the other shops I mentioned, it had a grassy/odd flavour to it.

I must look again and see if I can find Spanish garlic. Thanks Alun.

I just happened to be in Aldi today, and needed garlic as it happens, and it reminded me of this thread which is why I paid extra attention to the label :) It even has the variety on it, Morado.

Lidl's garlic has always been Chinese as far as I recall.
