    hello

    i am thinking about doing the Computer Networks & Systems Management in L.I.T and am wondering what kind of jobs will i be able to do when finished.

    Well this course is somewhat like UL's Mobile Communications and Security so take a look there!

    The course is pretty much useless,until they get some sort of work placement in the third year it will remain that way...first 2 years are a total waste,lecturers not great overall id avoid if i were you...have not looked at cork one

    labs were never in working order,lecturer not great and too many filler modules that wont be used...

    I would be very interested in what you mean by filler modules. From looking at the syllabus linked above, the first two years of that course are not much different from any degree course I have lectured on (including the one I am currently lecturing on).

    Anyway, I have moved this to the LIT forum in the hope you will get more responses.

    Filler modules are rife in the college, I'm in the music tech course and we have one of the modules listed in this course.

    And the lecturer doing it is beyond woeful.

    I'm currently in first year in the Computer Networks & Systems Management course in LIT. There are six subjects in first year: Computer Networks, Computer Systems, Computer Applications, Programming Concepts, Operating Systems, Interpersonal Communications. The subjects are actually very similar to most other colleges. There is only something like 30 places on the course, and only about 15 turn up day to day.

    I'm going transferring at the end of the year to another college into a similar course. It hasn't turned out to be anything like I expected it to be!

    Exactly. What you see in the syllabus isn't necessarily what you get with LIT I think...

    Agree with the point about filler modules, I ended up with data normalisation on three different subjects over two years. I'm a mature student and made this point in conversation to one of the senior lecturers who agreed with me. It's part of a drive to make modules common between disciplines but it wasn't in my interest as a student.

    My boyfriend is starting this course in September and trying to get an idea of what the timetable is like, does anybody have last years, first year timetable and what are the chances of it changing much?? Any other information would be great

    Trying to guess timetables is fairly pointless to be honest.

    For the first four weeks in college, the timetable is liable to changes and they are never confirmed until around October. Prepare for the worst case scenarios i.e finishing at 6 Monday to Thursday and 4 or 5 on a Friday.

    I did this course, finished in 2009. The biggest waste of time possibly ever, 4 years of rubbish!

    Look it wasn't complete rubbish, labs were a waste of time. Some lecturers were...The advantage is that you can complete the CCNA course which is highly looked upon in industry.

    It's not a great course, I did a masters after it, there was no way I was getting a job solely with that course, don't know anyone who did either.

    I'd say 50% of the course work is complete rubbish, but then again that could be most courses...

    Saying thate everything in the masters was benificial.

    I've 4 years of data stored, assignments, notes, whatever...PM me if you decide to do the course.

    Yeah, the CCNA course is good there. Doing CCNA is a great qualification & well worth doing.

    I did CNSM finished this year, out of our class of 12 only 5 passed and so far 4 of us (my self included) have gotten jobs out of it.

    But they changed it for this year.

    At the last student, staff meeting about the course they told us they've brought in 9 months of work experience in year 3.

    The computer networks subject will do more server stuff.

    The final grade will be 50% year 4 and 50% year 3.

    If you drop out after 2 year they'll give you an exit award (level 6).

    There's bits I didn't like and bits I did but it was a good enough course.

    Yeah i'm doing the course all the classes are an hour at least, usually last about 40-50 mins. it's a handy enough course nothing to bad or overly difficult. at least not in first year

    Ah, I was half asleep reading the timetable, I see there an hour now. Friday is a really relaxed day. Is there many in your class? How is the math compared to leaving cert, is the scripting difficult?

    There's about 15 in the class. The maths is ok. You do number systems, logic, matrices, set theory, trigonometry, and statistics throughout the year. I found most of them easier than leaving cert maths. Matrices was the only one that caused me problems. The scripting again isn't too hard, they just teach the basics. All in all if you show up to classes you'll be fine it's the ones that never showed up that are failing or have dropped out already.

    Nice one thanks for the speedy replies. Are you doing the CCNA/CCENT as well. Im planning to as they are a good qualification to have.

    What book or syllabus do you use for the math, if I could get my hands on the book you use I could brush up on it :)

    You do them as part of the course but you have to pay to do the final exam. That wasn't made clear to us at the start we thought we were going to get the cert but nope. You do get certified as a Microsoft Office Specialist in word PowerPoint and excel which is nice to stick on the cv. You also get Office for free and access to dreamsparks premium which gives you access to a boat load of free Microsoft software including free copies of windows vista 7 8 and 8.1 and copies of windows server

    There are no textbooks on this course. Just YouTube the subjects for exales of them
