Were you planned?

Someone in another thread said most pregnancies are accidents. I have no idea whatsoever, so I thought I'd start a thread. Did your parents plan to have you? Or were you a pleasant surprise?

I was the first and last son of a couple who would have been on the older side of average for having children. The biological clock was ticking. I guess you could say I was the trophy at the end of a grueling series of practise runs and failed attempts. :pac:

I've 3 siblings all born in the mid to late 70's and I showed up in 1989. I'll let you figure it out

I have no idea tbh whether I was or wasn't planned, it was just something I was never actually interested enough to ask my parents, though when my parents used say to me "You'll wish you'd never been born!", it confused me greatly, because at that moment was that not them wishing I'd never been born?

Give a fcuk tbh, I'm here now and there's sod-all they can do about it :pac:

Nope I definitely wasnt planned! There's 6 kids in the family. Four years between me and my youngest brother, he was the biggest surprise apparently!

My mother thought she went into menopause the year after she had me. Three years without any periods after that and she was somehow pregnant with my little brother. I can only imagine the look on my Dads face when she told him she was expecting!!

21 year old parents and I was born 9 months after the Dubs won the 1983 All-Ireland. I really don't think there was much planning there.

My Mother was 16 when she discovered I was on the way, so no, I don't think I was planned ( lucky I didn't end up in one of those laundry places back then ).

I was definitely planned as my mam was one of the lucky few who had a brother living in UK forward thinking enough to agree to smuggle contraceptives to her back when they were illegal here.

She had huge health concerns that pregnancy would have been pretty risky for her and even at that her doctor wouldn't prescribe them

She finally decided to change doctors (or actually, I think he died and the new guy was his successor) and with his help she had me and my sister but for her it was nearly living in a hospital both times for the whole pregnancy and being monitored very closely for a long time after. Brave woman, my mum. :)

My best mates family is nearly exactly like mine. He is only a few weeks older than me and has 3 siblings all the same age as mine. Our brothers even have the same first name and went to school together. His aul lad was actually a post man so he's referred to as the post mans child at any given opportunity. I even have him saved as "post mans baba" in my phone

I was an accident, my ma called me a gift cause of the age of my parents.

Out of the 3 of ours, the 1st was an accident, the 2nd was planned (nothing as sexy as planned sex) and the 3rd just came earlier than planned, we had agreed that we wanted another and a few days later I came home to find a positive test and an emotional wife in the house

Well, we're all created by God, so none of us are unplanned, in that sense....

    Nope, definitely not planned.

My mam's story of breaking the news to her mother (this was in the late 80s, they weren't married, and her mother is a super conservative Catholic, although she has mellowed a bit now) is great.

She and my dad went down for the weekend, my mother was terrified of her mother and she kept putting off the conversation. A few hours before they were supposed to be leaving she got my dad to take my aunt out for a walk so she could face my grandmother alone. Cue roaring and shouting and what did I do wrong rearing you that you turned out like this, how could you do this to me etc etc.

Then my dad lands back "Well Mrs McCarthy did she give you the news?"

"Ah she did, sure it's not the end of the world. These things happen, don't you be worrying. Sit down there now and have a cup of tea"

My friends dad told him one time when he was drunk "the best part of you David ran down me leg" ha

    Planned.

I think it must be terrible for any child to be told, even if they were, that they were an accident. I know someone this happened to and it is something that has always coloured her relationship with her Mum and Dad.

Yes, I think I was planned. This was the mid 70s and my Mum was very fortunate to have had access to the pill. In fact quite a few forward thinking doctors in Ireland at the time prescribed the pill "to regulate periods" as opposed to the real reason - contraception. Where she managed to buy the pill is a mystery. Perhaps the doctor had them smuggled in.

I'm the youngest of 3. My older sister is 5 years ahead of me.

Yep, I'm the 2nd child of 3. My mum once told me 'we did a lot of trying for you'

Which, frankly, was more information than I ever needed to know :(

My older brother wasn't planned, in fact from my calculations there may have been a shotgun at the wedding. I was planned though as my mum even told me that she was into horoscopes back in the day and knew that a Virgo (me) and a Taurus (my brother) would get on well so she planned me almost to the very date.

My younger brother 10 years later wasn't planned. Nor was my sister another 7 after that!

My dad always jokes that if he had gotten the finger out earlier he could have had a child born in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90s, but the eldest was born in 1970.

I most certainly wasn't planned. I have 9 siblings so doubt any of us were planned.

I don't think God fully thought it through when he planned some people.

It seems like an awful trivial thing to be concerned about. I don't think I'd care. I'm not in that situation so I can't really say with certainty how it would affect me though, maybe it would?

Totally pointless thing to tell a child if it's likely to upset them though, one of those situations where a lie really has no negatives and may be the best option. Provided there is no question over who is the father.
