Was told it was very expensive stuff. Maybe Miller didn't have it. More soya hulls going in
Now. Would that help more than a maize based nut?

used it last year with fairly good results, using again this year, thickens the dung ok but b/f still low (3.6)

cows wern't really eating the nuts as we use sheep to mop out the paddocks so the cows were always stuffed

since the change in the weather I have tightened them up grass wise to make them eat meal , to get cal mag in

will see does it make any difference

Here it's grass and 2 kg 12% nut with calmag 3kg for last few cold days.
    Cows doing 29 litres
    Heifers doing 26 litres
    Bfat 4.03
    Pro 3.70
    Urea 20
Don't know what the fuss is about

That's serious going. It would make you me seriously think about using the black and white with a jersey straw.

Absolutely no doubt ,serious performance both yield and solid wise but frazzled has the big block of land and the ideal cow for it .limited parlour acres mean a different story, basics stay same grow and utilise max grass and convert it to milk solids but we also need the Ltrs.a smaller margin on a bigger pool of milk eg 10 cent margin on 750 k Ltrs is still more than 12 cent on 500 k

Frazzes cows are doing 30l, I think 500kl against 750 for same number of HOs is selling him short, more like 650kl against 750, and a decent bit less work/tlc etc etc required. The jex/NZx well suited to us small boys also.

18% might be a bit high in pr for this time of year, using a 16 here at the minute and will get a 14% next time

whats the protein in grass at the moment ,17% or so, what are your thoughts on keeping the ration at the same.

Very difficult to get any really good Je straws, gene pool too limited. We've used no Je for 4 yrs now. We now use Kiwi cross. You get daughter proven stock that do exactly what it says on the tin

Tbf he is the exception, most x herds I know are in the 4500 to 5500 ltr range.not many x bred herds have the same performance .im in the small herd brigade with average milk block and nothing will beat a hol fr on it.i have Ltrs ,solids and fertility in spring milk.

did you have a herd of high yielding hol back in the day frazz? Do you think that as they were the starting point so to speak that you have now a relatively high yielding xbred herd? Or can they be achieved without the high yielding hol base? Management playing no small part in those figures of yours id guess also, raising the average figures like that is what we all should aim for.

We started with pure je the backward way. Worked out the same

Were they Danish jersey gg? Have thought of crossing a few cows and see how they pan out but have a little heifer here similar in size to jerseyx and by god it can be a pain in the hole with her in the parlour particularly with other heifers around her so now I'm thinking it's all in re crossbreeding or not at all

Think so. I was only a chap when dad started it.
but yeah I've a je heifers this yr. Lovely quite girl but if she was fiesty I'd have trouble controlling her in the parlour

That's a second calver hol. I'll sell here as soon as I have surplus milkers biggest cow in herd and only a second calver

What ever you do don't touch those Danish or American Je. All you'l get is a rat of a brown cow that'll milk herself to death with all the associated problems of the Hol. I'd stay with Hol before I'd touch them again

You're asking about our base herd. At this stage it's a mix and match. If I were xbreeding I'd go direct to Kiwi and let some one in NZ have the small cows.

Yours and stans HOs are exceptional also ha. I know for me moving forward, 120 ish cows with the one full time labour unit, I could stick with a pure HO but high solids 1/2 or 1/4 jex like npy are what I'm using a decent bit of this yr, extremely good solids without too much milk.

Tbh frazz id be thinking different ways on the same subjects everyday! I have a lot to do in terms of my own setup and my own performance before I go changing cows thinking I'll solve all issues just interested in how they are doing and options going forward.
