Taxpayers asked to foot bill for morning after pill without prescription

It's a theme of discussion on Boards and everywhere that there is an increasing sense in Ireland that personal responsibility means f**k all and the state will be there to take care of you. We already see the social consequences of this attitude of dependency and protection in everyday life. It's like a virus.

So it comes as no surprise then that the ultimate act of a female choosing to open her own legs should be protected and paid for as well

- with free morning after pills paid for by the rest of us. It's already available through a GP prescription but some feel this is too much to ask.

If you are working hard in this country, if you are in the middle you are getting screwed. Never mind the banks and all this lark that dependents use as an excuse - the biggest expense is the social welfare system. The government are taking your money and handing it over to the most feckless in society while you try to pay your mortgage, pay your bills and hold on to your job and live a decent life. Those at the bottom and the top are cuddled and well taken care of. Us in the middle are forced to pay for everything.

Where will this end? What else do we have to provide? This is a welfare state we could not afford in the boom and we can't afford it now.

I'd say a new political party that promised to put a stop to this would do well in Ireland with the silent majority.

Oh FFS. Condoms aren't on the responsibility of the woman and at times they break/fail to work.
So can we go on a major rant over men to or are we just focusing on the women today?

Oh and just to add: I think I'd rather foot the bill for the morning after pill for someone than pay their child support for their kid for the 18 years or whatever it is now.

Eh - it's irrational to provide medical care to newborns at the taxpayer's expense but NOT to provide morning after pills. The cost of a morning after pill is much less (both in terms of financial impact, and social impact) compared to a child the parents don't want to the point where, the cost of the pill is a deciding factor in continuing the pregnancy.

I get the whole 'self reliance' argument - but we'd need to restructure....well....our whole society for it to make any sense. We don't expect everyone in our society to be self reliant, we have a ton of laws, taxes, credits, etc, etc....that are meant to provide aid to those who are not self reliant. As long as we're doing that, it's ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE better to pay for all the contraception in the world, because a lifetime of contraception is cheaper than the cost of raising just one child.

I also think the morning after pill should be free for students. I'll never forget having to borrow €90ish off my Mother when I was 18 because a condom broke. This was before you could get it OTC! So doctors visit + pill.

It's a lot cheaper now as far as I am aware! That would have been €50 for the docs and €40 for the pill. Now I'm pretty sure it's about €30 in a pharmacy.

If they have a medical card they are low income. They have to go to the doctor, the the pharmacy. Changing this would allow them to go straight to the pharmacy. It would be cheaper.

Numbers is not the issue here or what is cheaper. Principle is the issue. I believe everyone should take personal responsibility for their own lives and the culture of state dependency should stop.

As stated in the OP as someone in the middle I get feck all help from the state yet we are told to pay for everyone else. It's not right. They can run their own lives and take responsibility.

Well then in principle you're right and in the real world you'd be shooting yourself in the foot to oppose this.

In other words this is something that both results in you paying less for other people AND gives you the opportunity for a broad spectrum rant. You should be delighted. Or angry. Seems to be the same thing in your case.

I'm also "in the middle", same as you. I pay very high taxes. However, I was brought up by a single Mother and the medical card helped us for a good few years until my Mother earned enough for us not to need it anymore.

So sick of people thinking those on welfare are all lazy etc.
