Jamelia: 'High street shops shouldn't sell plus size clothing'

I'm sure this opinion won't go down well, but I think she has a point somewhat. Remember when there was an outrage over "size zero" clothes, because it promoted unrealistic body image and unhealthy body type. It's the same for plus size clothing, though what exactly constitutes as plus size is something I'm not going to debate on here. Having said that, the larger end of plus size is promoting as unhealthy patterns as size zero, just on the opposite side of the extreme completely.

If they want to get rid of size zero then they should have to reverse the vanity sizing...because the few bits of size 4 clothing i own (American size zero) are the same size as my old size 8 clothing.

I don't think that her opinions are being considered, she would be far from the only person with similar views.

People shouldn't have to suffer abuse because of their appearance or weight but the whole 'ah poor dear' excuse for people who are grossly overweight is also bollox imo. Of course there are reasons why people are under-weight or over-weight and that reason is free will and choice. As the saying going, the problem is between the fork and the mouth.

Do you think this will happen OP? Or are you outraged of a celeb's un-PCness, over something that is highly unlikely to happen?

I'm not getting a lot of outrage from the OP. One of the most overused words on this forum, surely.

As others said, people need to wear clothes, and wearing clothes that fit properly is best for everyone.

Thanks and I agree. No outrage here. Just a discussion topic added to a discussion forum, no biggie.

You're literally walking around displaying your lack of self-discipline and gluttony for the whole world.

I know, it's a handy indicator alright, for people who haven't got their superiority fix for the day. Thanks, obese people!

Yet if the high street decided to sell size 0 clothing they would be going crazy, claiming it sets a bad example and that teenagers will feel pressured to follow some unrealistic blah blah blah.

The high street does stock size 4 clothing (what Amercian size zero is here), as some petite, short women would be that size.

It's up to the shop who they sell to. If they make good profits off fat people then they'll keep selling to fat people.

The best thing may be for fatties to get issued a plain government tarpe and only allowed to travel at night so the skinny people's eyes aren't offended by the sight of blubber. Any fatty caught outside during the daylight can have rotten food thrown at them so they know how much society hates them.

Really? Who is size 16 and not fat?

A 5'10 or 5'11" woman who is size 16 might be an upper healthy weight or a bit overweight, but not obese, especially if she's medium-framed or large-framed.

Is this not how smokers are treated?

Smoking is much more detrimental to surrounding people than someone being overweight.

Isn't she a pop musician? Pardon the pun, but it's a bad idea to piss off a large chunk of your fanbase/customers.

It's supposed to make them feel bad for being different. You need to toughen up, it's for their own good.

    Bingo.

Say something controversial - get attention, some column inches maybe...one step closer to the bottom of the barrel.

Now we just need Billie Piper to come out and say black people shouldn't be allowed in to clothes shops and the circle of has been idiocy will be complete.

    Converging issues makes things muddled.

Women of the world - demand a new clothes measurement system ffs. :D
Preferably along the lines of the metric system.

Being fat is bad. I know. I was (long time ago now). Punishing fat people is relatively a unproductive approach.
BUT normalising obesity is a far worse crime.
I am sick to my teeth of seeing innocent obese children on school mornings. The parents should be damned ashamed of themselves.
This is not normal. This is abnormal.
Obesity should be actively discouraged from all quarters.

Added sugar and artificial sweeteners tax ftw
    *lobs grenade*

Something standardised would be great. A guy can, generally, measure his waist, walk into a shop and buy a size 32 inch waist trousers and they will fit grand, there's nothing like that for women; we're left trying to guess whether we're an 8 or a 12 in any given shop.

    Speak for yourself.

    I've never been an 8! :P

I don't really wear jeans. It's too traumatic trying to buy them :pac:

I wear dresses - almost all bodycon style dresses because I've an hour glassy type shape (boobs, bum, small waist) - and I know exactly what suits me and exactly what size fits me. I buy online where possible because I bloody hate going shopping.

Bet she wouldn't have a problem of shops selling sizes suited for skeletons.

We don't. Why do you think so many women are crazy? "I was a 10 in that shop, why am I a 14 in this one? My legs are regular length, so why are these 'regular' trousers 8 inches too long? AAAAaaaarrrrgggghhhhh!"

And I don't think women actually enjoy shopping for hours, they just have the patience it takes to find anything that fits. I don't; I have a meltdown within an hour. I'm thinking of learning to sew so I never have to shop again.

Exactly. Some has-been on the show that they pull in has-beens to share their opinions and have a moan on weekday afternoons, cos they sell.

I wouldn't even call them has beens as to call them that would suggest they've actually achieved anything of note.

Bitter never weres might be a more apt description.

I wish I was smart enough to have bought a few pairs of the same jeans when I miraculously found a pair that fitted. It's a traumatising experience.
